“ | The finest ingredients are brought together with love and care, then slowly cooked to perfection. Yes, the old ways are still best at Los Pollos Hermanos. But don’t take my word for it. One taste, and you’ll know. | „ |

“ | I mean, what do we know about Gustavo Fring, huh? This whole friend of law enforcement thing? Could be a case of keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. I mean, he's got the money to finance this operation, maybe he's got the connections, too. Maybe – just maybe – he's our guy. | „ |
~ Hank Schrader deduces Gus Fring is a drug lord. |
Los Pollos Hermanos (ungrammatical Spanish for "The Chicken Brothers") are the main antagonists of the crime drama series Breaking Bad and major characters in its prequel series Better Call Saul.
With the fried chicken fast-food chain Los Pollos Hermanos and the laundromat Lavandería Brillante as legitimate fronts, Gus Fring's vast empire controls the distribution of billions of dollars of illicit Mexican cocaine and later methamphetamine throughout the Southwestern United States, including the coveted Blue Sky meth first produced by Walter White and Jesse Pinkman.
History[]
Los Pollos Hermanos was conceived by Gus Fring and his best friend and partner Max Arciniega as a front to distribute methamphetamine, a drug getting more popular during the 80s. When Gus and Max went to the Cartel to negotiate an alliance to use the channels to distribute meth, Hector Salamanca, unimpressed by the lack of respect shown by the duo, along with orders from Don Eladio, kills Max and forces Gus to watch. Following which, Gus took up sole leadership of the front and dedicated its resources to avenging Max and destroy the cartel.
With Gus's capable leadership, Los Pollos Hermanos expanded in multiple branches across America as a legitimate business, while Gus focused on the meth operations from Albuquerque. Eventually, Los Pollos Hermanos came into an alliance with Madrigal Electromotive, as well as its executives Lydia Rodarte-Quayle as well as Peter Schuler.
Gus used a sizeable percentage of the profits in ensuring the development of Max's village in tribute to him.
Better Call Saul[]
Los Pollos Hermanos makes its first (chronological) appearance when Mike Ehrmantraut sends Jimmy McGill to spy upon an enforcer who had been tracking Mike since his failed attempt on Hector's life. Eventually, Gus contacts Mike and helps him sabotage one of Hector's trucks, which made Hector force Gus to use him for distribution by threatening his employees, solidifying his importance in the cartel, which Eladio accepted, causing Hector to go into a stroke. Meanwhile, Gus successfully uses his contacts with Lydia to buy the laundromat to build a meth superlab, planning to expand his operations to Europe.
Gus later summons a few German engineers to build the superlab after hiring Gale Boetticher to ramp up production. When Lalo Salamanca arrived in America for a meeting, Gus uses him to gain favor. After Werner Ziegler defies protocol to meet his wife (risking exposure by Lalo), Mike tracks him down and kills him to prevent the secret of the superlab from leaking out. Gus later spends his resources so that Lalo is arrested and put behind bars for good, although later engineering his release after Lalo orders Nacho Varga to bomb one of his restaurants, which both Gus and Nacho reluctantly carried out by destroying the restaurant at Los Lunas so that Nacho's cover remains intact. Gus later has Mike recant the evidence so that Lalo stops destroying his properties for revenge.
Realizing Lalo would be back for revenge, Gus has Mike hire hitmen to kill Lalo using Nacho Varga, which failed due to Lalo's quick thinking and meticulous planning, after which Lalo swore revenge against Gus and Nacho. He later faked his death to bring Gus to a false sense of security, which got thwarted after Gus met Hector and realized he knows Lalo is alive.
Breaking Bad[]
By Breaking Bad, Los Pollos Hermanos has become the prime method of supplying drugs across America, as Gus uses Gale to manufacture meth. After getting contacted by Saul Goodman via Mike, Gus decides to partner up with Walter White, the elusive Heisenberg putting out 99.1% pure meth, thus threatening Gus's supply while assigning Gale to learn Walt's recipe after Walt's death due to cancer. Gus later uses Marco and Leonel Salamanca to put a hit out on Hank due to him being the one who killed Tuco Salamanca, while subsequently warning Hank about the hit. Hank barely survives the attack as Gus uses this excuse to have Juan Bolsa's mansion raided by Mexican federales, leading to his death and Los Pollos Hermanos's power increasing further.
Eventually, Jesse Pinkman begun to date Andrea Cantillo, who is revealed to be the sister of Tomás Cantillo, the boy who killed Combo, one of Jesse's friends. Jesse eventually asked Gus to let Tomás go, to which Gus "complies", leading to the boy's death at the hands of the Rival Dealers. Infuriated, Jesse asks Walt for revenge, leading to Walt telling Gus his plans. As Jesse goes to kill the dealers single-handedly, Walt arrives in his Pontiak Aztec and kills the dealers himself, begging Jesse to run. This act will eventually lead to the enmity between Walt and Gus. Gus later re-hires Gale in order to learn Walt's recipe so that he can be the head cook once he kills Walt. After Mike and Victor capture Walt and brings him to the superlab to kill him and lure Jesse, he tricks them into believing he has nothing up his sleeve, as he ordered Jesse to kill Gale in order to save themselves, which Jesse reluctantly carried out.
Victor implicated himself in Gale's murder scene while attempting to stop Jesse from killing Gale. When Gus finds out, Victor attempts to reproduce Walt's Blue Sky in order to convince Gus that he's still useful to him and Walt and Jesse are both redundant, in response of Walt's pleas to spare both of them, but Gus is unconvinced of Victor's efficiency and him getting spotted, and kills him with a box cutter, ordering Walt and Jesse to continue cooking. Los Pollos Hermanos trucks are attacked by the Cartel, which is countered by Mike killing the assassins. Mike then decides that Jesse is a liability due to Walt compromising everything to save him, and asks for an opportunity to test him.
Meanwhile, Hank Schrader, the officer in charge of investigating Heisenberg, gets into the crime scene of his death as he tags Victor as his prime suspect of Gale's murder due to being present at the scene while retrieving his lab notes containing the formula for Blue Sky. Deeming it as enough evidence, Hank decides to close the investigation, but is spurred into re-investigating him after Walt in a drunken state derides Gale as an amateur and implies "the real one might still be out there", leads him to find Los Pollos Hermanos's contents in his home. Gus cooperates as a gambit to get the DEA to get Hank off his case, as he (along with Mike) slowly turns Jesse against Walt after noting Jesse's cook is as good as Walt's. After the Cartel scares him into complying, Gus decides to execute his master plan to eliminate the Cartel, as Gus requests Eladio to meet up for an alliance to spread crystal meth across North America with his resources, which Eladio accepts due to the lucrative proposal.
In the pretext of sharing the formula for Blue Sky with the Cartel, Gus procures a batch of Zafiro Anejo and poisons all of it planning to offer to the Cartel. Due to Eladio's suspicion, Gus also ingests the poison (after which he vomits some of it, thus removing the poison's worst effects) as most of the Cartel's leadership is eliminated in one fell swoop, with Mike killing Gaff and Jesse killing Joaquin Salamanca in self-defense, but their escape goes a bit awry as Mike is shot in the struggle. This also results in Los Pollos Hermanos becoming the greatest drug empire in the Southwest. Impressed with Jesse, Gus makes him his head cook as he fires Walt and tells him he plans to kill Hank and would kill Walt's entire family if he interferes, which Walt does anyway by having Saul warn the Albuquerque DEA about the Cartel wanting to kill Hank.
End of Los Pollos Hermanos[]
Despite the threat, both Walt and Hank decide to continue their paths: as Hank finally locates the Laundry (despite facing an accident by Walt). Hank has Gomez visit the laundry supervised by Dennis Markowski, but is unable to find any evidence. Desperate to gain Jesse's support so that he can kill Gus, Walt orders Huell to steal the ricin cigarette from Jesse as he poisons Brock with Lily of the Valley growing in his backyard. After Jesse confronts him on Brock's poisoning, Walt lures the attention towards Gus and convinces him he poisoned Brock so that Jesse could kill him. Believing him, Jesse helps Walt lure Gus to the hospital when Walt fits a pipe bomb to his car but is unsuccessful as Gus decides not to use the car.
After this failed attempt, Jesse clues Walt on Gus's enmity with Hector Salamanca (who by now has lost all of his family members at Gus's hands). As he convinces Hector to help him get rid of Gus, Gus's men follow Hank to Hector's meeting where Gus is convinced he ratted out on him. Now deciding to kill him, Gus and Tyrus arrive at Casa Tranquila, where Gus loads a lethal injection and taunts Hector to look at him. Convinced that he has finally won, Hector looks at him in pity as he triggers the pipe-bomb attached to his chair, leading to the resulting explosion killing Hector, Gus and Tyrus, after half of Gus's face is blown away during his escape. Walt kills the guards monitoring Jesse (due to Gus suspecting him for the attempted car assassination) as they burn down the superlab to hide their evidence.
Dissolution and aftermath[]
Soon after Gus's death, Hank discovers the destroyed superlab along with the remains of Gus's guards, thus confirming that Gus was a drug lord shipping meth to dealers. This revelation opened up investigations, costing ASAC Merkert his job due to his close association with Gus, a fact he deeply regretted. Mike, after his recovery, is informed about Gus's death and the dissolution of Los Pollos Hermanos, after which he attempts to kill Walt and Jesse, but is persuaded to help them erase their involvement with Gus, after which Gus's laptop is destroyed by a powerful magnet.
Mike and his men are soon interrogated by the DEA as the hazard pay is discovered, and once Gomez and his men catch Dan Wachsberger trying to access Mike's money, Dan flips on Mike and gets him on the DEA radar. Despite all their precautions, Mike is killed by Walt after a heated argument, after which, Walt orders the prison hit on Gus's incarcerated men and destroys everyone linking him to Gus' empire. Several months later, Hank eventually puts all the pieces together after reading Gale's message to Walt on his copy of Leaves of Grass, and launches an illegal investigation on him to catch him.
