~ Lotte sending the vampire choir boys to attack Herr and Matthew.

Lotte Lipp is the wife (at least in name) of Herr Lipp in The League of Gentlemen.

She is played by League writer Mark Gatiss, who has played many other roles on the show.

History[]

Season Two[]

Lotte appears briefly in the second series, when she arrives in Royston Vasey from Germany to check up on her husband Herr Lipp who is on the student exchange. She finds him in the company of a young man named Justin (whose family Herr is staying with) and attempts to warn the man away from her husband, however ends up being put out by Herr. Lotte returns a few moments later after Herr attacked Justin with coffee and knocked him unconscious, and got her to help him bury Justin in the garden.

Christmas Special[]

Lotte appears a bit more prominently in the Christmas Special during a flashback set in 1975, in which Herr Lipp is the leader of an orphaned boy's choir. At this time he takes on an orphaned young man named Matthew, who comes to live with Lotte, Herr and the choir boys. Unknown to Matthew and Herr, Lotte and the choir boys are vampires, and Lotte bites into Matthew's neck whilst he is asleep to suck his blood. When Matthew discovers the neck scars, he assumes Herr is responsible due to his clear attraction to Matthew. When Matthew asks Lotte if Herr is a vampire, she warns him to leave that very night.

The following morning Matthew plans to "expose" Herr as a vampire, and confronts him whilst he is conducting the choir. But it is revealed to both of them that the choir boys are vampires, as is Lotte. Lotte blames Herr for not providing her with children, forcing her to "provide her own". Lotte then orders the vampire boys to attack Herr and Matthew. Herr sacrifices himself to the vampires in order to allow Matthew to escape.

Personality[]

Lotte is shown to be angry and frustrated with her husband Herr Lipp, most likely due to his sexual attraction to men and refusing to provide her with children. When she became a vampire (through unknown means), she infected a choir of boys that lived with them so they became her adoptive kids. Despite this nature she seems to be somewhat protective of other men and boys that come into Lipp's contact, and even warns Matthew to leave Germany, and likely didn't want to transform him into a vampire. This shows that she has some sort of empathy and she was willing to spare him. Although she doesn't show any mercy for Lipp as she forces her vampire army to feast upon him and transform him into a vampire.

Decades later she attempts to protect Justin from Herr Lipp and warns him about his nature, although she doesn't make much of an effort this time around and doesn't attempt to speak English. When Lipp knocks Justin out she willingly helps her husband cover up the evidence and bury Justin alive in the garden.

Trivia[]

  • The scene revealing her as a vampire was used as one of the clips in Bravo's 100 Greatest Scariest Moments when The League of Gentlemen was listed.
  • Lotte and Herr Lipp are unlike other traditional vampires in fiction as they are able to survive in direct sunlight.
