Louis Guiabern is the main antagonist of the 2024 role-playing video game Metaphor: ReFantazio. An officer of the royal army of the United Kingdom of Euchronia, he quickly climbed up the ranks from a young age, and is both respected and feared by many as a talented but ruthless military leader who values strength above all else. He is the arch-nemesis of Will and his primary rival for the Euchronian throne.
Louis is believed to be the one who cast a deadly curse on the prince twelve years ago, although he left behind no evidence that could implicate him. He would later directly assassinate the current king, Hythlodaeus V, which sets in motion the events of the story. Despite this, Louis remains highly popular among a significant portion of the populace and the military who admire his ideology of meritocracy, and is one of the leading candidates to become the next king. Will and his allies set out to kill him in order to lift the prince's curse.
He was voiced by Yuichi Nakamura in Japanese and by Joseph Tweedale in English.
Profile[]
Louis Guiabern presents himself as a clemar, the most politically dominant of the eight tribes of Euchronia, distinguished by their horns. He openly rejects the social hierarchy imposed by the Sanctist Church, and leads a faction of the military in which one's abilities are valued regardless of tribe or class. Due to this, his followers are deeply loyal to him.

Early life[]
In truth, Louis is a member of the elda, a tribe of people with no distinguishing features that is marginalized by the rest of Euchronian society. He was born to the Charadrius family of healers in an elda village hidden in the forests far to the west of the royal capital. When Louis was a child, Hythlodaeus V visited the village and learned the true history of the world. The king wrote a fantasy novel about a utopian society based on the old world in which tribal distinctions did not exist and all were treated equally before the law, which inspired the young Louis to follow the king's ideals. Soon after, however, a pogrom was launched against the village under the orders of Aestivum Forden, the head of the Sanctist Church, killing Louis's family and most of the villagers. While the other survivors went into hiding in an underground sanctuary, Louis left the village behind, disguising himself as a clemar by wearing a set of fake horns.
Trivia[]
- Louis is clearly based on the character Lucifer from the original Megami Tensei franchise, which has been theorized by some fans to exist in the same cosmology as Metaphor ReFantazio. The reasons for this are the following:
- Louis is the name that Lucifer uses in his human guises.
- Both of them have a pretty boy/bishounen appearance, and are blonde.
- Both of them are social darwinists with a bit of nihilism, though Lucifer is portrayed as far more sympathetic than Louis.
