Louise Iver is the overarching antagonist of the British crime series Whitechapel.

Louise is implied to be an ancient demonic entity who has plagued the Whitechapel area of London for centuries in the form of an elderly woman and is behind many of the atrocious crimes that have been committed there, including those in the events of the series. She appears as the main antagonist of the fourth and final season and the enemy to the detectives investigating the grisly crimes in 21st century Whitechapel.

She is portrayed by Angela Pleasence.

Origin and nature

Louise's true identity is unknown, although it is heavily implied she isn't human, having operated in Whitechapel dating back to at least the 19th century. Her behaviour and MO implies that she is a demonic entity who as the ability to manipulate people into becoming killers and commit atrocious crimes. Her earliest known work was being the mastermind behind the Jack the Ripper case which occurred in the late 1800s, and went unresolved.

Kray brothers Louise Iver

Louise present with the Kray twins during the 1960s.

In the 1960s she was behind the crimes of the notorious Kray Twins Ronnie and Reggie Kray, who operated as the leaders of the criminal empire known as "The Firm" in London. Ronnie and Reggie were later arrested and imprisoned in 1969, with Ronnie later dying in 1996 and Reg in 2000.

Louise's activities did not go unnoticed, as she would gain the attention of the CIA during the late 2000s although was nicknamed "Agent Provocateur", as they were unaware of her true identity and appearance. Louise was presumably the mastermind behind other grisly crimes occurring during the start of Whitechapel, although every killer the police investigated ended up being killed in some way, thus they were not able to link Louise to them early on.

Whitechapel

Louise makes her presence known to the team of detectives in the premiere of the fourth series, in which she attends the book launch of Edward Buchan, who works as an archivist assisting in researching into the crimes at the police station. She begins to make the team of detectives uneasy with her presence and manner of speaking, although they attempt to shrug it off to her being a spiteful old woman. But one of the officers, DC Megan Riley, is hugely unsettled by Louise Iver, and began having problems leaving her desk at the station. Senior officer Miles also is on the end of Louise's manipulations, as she told him he wouldn't be respected due to his old age.

Louise continues to corrupt ordinary people into becoming violent and unhinged psychopathic murderers, but this time begins to observe the police's efforts to stop the killers from a distance, just out of sight. She managed to convince a bankrupt baker suffering from ergot poisoning that he was cursed by witches, forcing him to kill off random people that he believed to be a witch. Around this time, a CIA agent arrives in Whitechapel and investigates Louise's actions. He is later killed under mysterious circumstances when he falls from a building, presumably killed off by Louise. The dossier on Louise (named the Agent Provocateur) ends up in Edward's possession, and he lets D.I. Joseph Chandler and D.S. Ray Miles known about the possible presence of a demon in Whitechapel. Following the station shutting for the night, Louise begins to lurk in the empty dark corridors of the station.

In the second case when a killer skins his victims, Louise is seen among a crowd when an alive victim (whose flesh has been flayed) is discovered. The killer is a book shop owner who kidnaps Edward and plans to flay his skin. The killer ends up dead as well when he commits suicide by throwing himself into a meat grinding machine. The killer in this case mentioned to Edward that someone else came to him asking about books on human skin, which Miles later deduces to possibly be Louise, again talking him into killing.

In the final case of the series a religious cult begin kidnapping and sacrificing people. During this investigation Miles uncovers video footage he sets up around the police station, which picks up Louise snooping about in the early hours of the morning. When he and his boss DI Joseph Chandler go to investigate, they come across an old room with pipes which have had large nails hammered into them, which has caused flooding and leaking. Miles puts this down to the strange goings on in the station the past few weeks, in which the lights have been flickering and damp forming around, almost giving the illusion of a paranormal presence. He believes it is a vendetta by the old woman, and gets her alleged name from Edward. When in Edward's archive room, it is here Miles believes she is responsible for a lot of the horrible murders in Whitechapel after finding photographs of her going back nearly two centuries. However Edward doesn't believe it, thinking it may just be other old women resembling her.

When the cult in the third case are arrested, Louise deliberately steps in front of their transit van, causing it to swerve, crash and blow up. At that very moment, Chandler opened up a letter from a psychic claiming to be from his father, telling Chandler not to put them all in one van. Yet again, Chandler was unable to bring in any murderer alive.
