Lieutenant Hiram Coffey is the main antagonist in James Cameron's 1989 film, The Abyss. He is portrayed by Michael Biehn (who also played Johnny Ringo in Tombstone) in his first villainous role.
Lt. Hiram Coffey is the team leader of SEALs who are tasked to recover a Trident missile warhead and somehow became a villain in the movie who is suffered from HPNS (High Pressure Nervous Syndrome) after having disaster circumstances underwater along with the drilling crew.
Biography[]
Lt. Hiram Coffey was trained as the team leader of Navy Seal and also the commander of the team. He came along with his two members, Schoenick and Ensign Monk. They are ordered to recover the Trident missile warhead from the Ohio-class submarine USS Montana which was sunk near the Cayman Trough after encountering with unidentified submerged objects. After failing to shoot Bud (due to Monk emptying the cartridge), he fights with Bud and manage to overpower him. Before he could kill Bud, he is stopped by Catfish De Vries, who punches Lt. Coffey with one blow, dropping him away. Coffey still managed to get back up on his feet and rush his way, entering the mini sub which he loaded with the missile.
Fate[]
Lt. Coffey attempted to carry and launch the missile warhead to bottom with the mini sub but is stopped Bud and Lindsey who using the other sub by hitting his, causing him fall along with his sub to the depth and imploded by the pressure as he screams in anger, which ultimately ends his life.
Personality[]
Lt. Coffey tends to be a high trained Navy SEAL who was obeying order to complete mission and determined to finish it. Somehow, he is narcissistic and can be a violent person when things are falling apart or not executed as plan, causing him to make an irrational decision even though he thought it is for greater and good. With him under his paranoia and suffered from High Pressure Nervous Syndrome, he refuses to listen or believe in everything about the Non-Terrestrial Intelligence from Lindsey that they are not a threat humanity. He thinks that with everything is falling apart and they cannot reach communication which giving him a pressure and thinks he is useless to do something as a Navy Seal while keep listening to Lindsey and Bud. Fear of the unknown, this causing him to do the otherwise which he thinks it might the only solution by taking the missile and use to exterminate the NTIs. As the trained Navy Seal soldier, Lt. Coffey shows what he is made of, that he is not easy man to be take down. Other than that, Lt. Coffey also shows his behavior with pain as he slashes his arms multiple times with his knife while Lindsey explaining about the NTIs. This allowing him to struggle with his nervous and trying to get his grip on it.
