Lucifer is the overarching antagonist in the film Constantine. Originally one of God's most favored Archangels, Lucifer would rebel against Heaven and be cast down into Hell, where he would then begin his proxy war against his father for the fate of all mankind. He is the father of Mammon, the archenemy of John Constantine, and, inadvertently, the driving force behind the events of the film.
He was portrayed by Peter Stormare, who also portrayed Gaear Grimsrud in Fargo, Dino Velvet in 8mm, John Abruzzi in Prison Break, Uli Klunkel in The Big Lebowski, Sir Slicer in Adventure Time, Thomas Burrell in The Last Stand, King Xarion in Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, Dieter Stark in The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Ghost in 22 Jump Street, Werner Zytle in Arrow, The Nazi Officer in the music video for Sabaton's "Uprising", Shayes in Mercury Rising, Abram Tarasov in John Wick: Chapter 2, Torsten in False Trail, Prometheus Black in Transformers: Animated, Ernst Rohm in Hitler: The Rise of Evil, Count Dracula in The Batman vs. Dracula, and Sheriff Berringer in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.
History[]
Billions of years ago at the dawn of creation, the Archangel Samael turned against God and the other angels and rebelled against his rule. For this, God banished his favorite son from the cosmos and cast him down into what would become Hell. Now taking the name Lucifer, from here he would plan and scheme his ultimate revenge against his father, establishing the infernal realm and creating demonkind to wage war against Heaven. In time, Lucifer's war and his participation in it lessened, as he came up with a new plan in order to achieve his vengeance. While the forces of Hell continued to rage, Lucifer himself instead opted to continue his campaign in a more subtle and behind the scenes manner; He would prove to God that humanity was only fit for damnation, and thus began a proxy war for the souls of mankind, using his demons to tempt and corrupt humans and deliver their souls to Hell.
At some point in the 20th Century, a teenage John Constantine committed suicide, a cardinal sin in the eyes of God. Because of this, his soul was sentenced to damnation in Hell. He would however be revived after momentarily dying, something that enraged Lucifer to such an extent that the Devil swore he would come himself to eventually collect John's soul when he finally died. Years later, his son Mammon entered a secret agreement with the Archangel Gabriel. Together, they would bring about the apocalypse early, with Gabriel's hopes being that such a desolate land would force humanity to adapt and survive, and prove to God they were worthy of Heaven. This was against both God and Lucifer's wishes, and both would personally intervene to stop it. Lucifer arrived when John committed suicide for the second time, oblivious that doing so was all a part of John's plan. After finding out what his son was up to, Lucifer snatched Mammon away and banished him back to Hell, while God prevented Gabriel from trying to kill him, and later would not aid the Archangel when Lucifer rendered him a mere mortal. Hating being indebted to anyone, Lucifer agreed to send Isabel's soul to Heaven as thanks for John informing him of the situation, but he would be caught unaware yet again when this act counted as a selfless sacrifice, granting John's soul access to Heaven. An infuriated Lucifer from being denied John's soul again brings John back to life by healing him of his wounds and curing him of his terminal lung cancer via extraction (albeit painfully) in hopes that Constantine will sin so his soul can be taken to Hell once again.
