Villain Overview

The upper devils are the equals of the Dark Triad. The lower devils are even more powerful... And... If the final devil, Lucifero emerges... The world is finished.
~ Nacht explaining about the devils and what will happen if Lucifero is released.
You there... Your heads are all... Raised far too high.
~ Lucifero upon manifesting into the world.

Lucifero, also known as the King of Devils, is one of the overarching antagonists of the Black Clover franchise. He is a highest-ranking devil who acts as the source of power for Dante Zogratis, one of the three members of the devil-possessed Dark Triad and briefly Morris Libardirt.

He is one of the highest ranked devil among his kind, who serves as one of the three rulers of the underworld, operating within in the lowest level of the Tree of Qliphoth, the magic channel that connects the underworld to the real world. He is the arch-enemy of both Asta and Liebe, being responsible for causing their tragedies.

Appearance[]

Lucifero profile

Lucifero's initial half appearance.

Lucifero's full appearance is depicted as a tall, shadowy figure with four hooked bat-like wings, and with four horns sticking out of the temples and sides of his head. He also appears to have very long hair that drags down to his body. When partially manifested into the human world via combining with other devils, resulting in turning him into a grotesque tentacled blob-like creature with one tentacle having sharp, black teeth, horns and black tendrils.

Upon emerging into the human world at half his power, Lucifero's physical traits become more clear and show that his skin has a very wrinkled texture around his body. He appears to utilize shadows to create a long skirt that covers his legs.

Lucifero later assumes a more powerful form that changes his appearance drastically by utilizing the full extent of his power. His horns grow noticeably larger, while his skirt becomes shorter. He also gains protruding, pointed shoulders and the wrinkles around his body become less transparent, lacking the monstrous features in favour of a more human-like appearance.

Personality[]

Lucifero is a sinister, arrogant, cruel, and destructive being that seeks to bring cataclysm to the world. He appears to think very little of devils below him as he claimed he has no knowledge of Liebe and believes him to be a low-ranking devil, though this could just be a case of him lying as he has encountered this particular devil in the past before. He despises lower-ranked devils so much that he cannot tolerate their mere existence alone. He also views humans the same way, believing them to be insolent wretches. Likewise, when Asta is able to cut his fingertip with his sword, Lucifero becomes very angry at his "filth" and proceeds to strike him down.

He has shown to be very sadistic and takes great delight in watching others suffer great losses and pain, based on his actions with Liebe where he used his body to kill his adoptive mother, Licita and laughed at his suffering. When he later meets Liebe again however, he still cannot remember him or the murder he committed on his adoptive mother, Licita. Instead, he continues to express his disgust towards him, viewing him as scum with no magic power. However Lucifero apparently believes in giving credit where credit is due, as he acknowledged Asta, Nacht ,Yami, and Yuno as being able to hurt him, and deems them worthy of using all of his power at the moment.

Like Liebe and Zagred, he desires a physical body of his own so that he can gain the power needed to lay waste upon the human world. Because of this, he is very manipulative and easily willing to sacrifice his hosts once they have served their purpose, as demonstrated with Dante and Morris, both of which he abandoned when they were defeated. He has also proven to be cunning, having known of Megicula's plan of being released early, despite Megicula's claim that he was not aware of its actions, and used it to perfect his own plan for escaping the Underworld.

Biography[]

At an unknown point, Lucifero made a contract with Dante Zogratis to assist in the Dark Triad's plan in performing the Qliphoth ritual, which unleash all the devils from the Underworld, who unleash so much chaos and destruction it would result in the extermination of 90% of the human population. With the power granted to them by the devils, the Dark Triad launch a successful coup of the Spade Kingdom and rule it as dictators.

While the Dark Triad make preparations for the Qliphoth ritual, Lucifero continued to search for other ways of escaping the Underworld. He eventually discovered a low-ranking demon named Liebe, who had been able to leave the Underworld because he had no magic and was now living as the adopted son of Licita, Asta's mother. He attempted to possess Liebe's body and manifest through it, but when Licita tried to stop him, he used the partial control he had over Liebe's body to impale her with his arm. Despite being mortally wounded, Licita managed to force Lucifero out of Liebe and seal her adopted son inside of her Grimoire to keep him out of Lucifero's reach.

Heart Kingdom Joint Struggle Arc[]

While hunting for Yami, Dante utilizes Lucifero's Gravity Magic to fight against the Black Bulls. When he fights against Asta, Dante asks Lucifero which Devil the former is getting his Anti-Magic from, but Lucifero doesn't recognize it and dismisses it as a low-ranking devil. After the Dark Triad succeed in capturing Yami and William, Lucifero makes an addition contract with Moris, increasing the capabilities of his Modification Magic and allowing him to extract the inherited knowledge from Lolopechka, who was also taken captured by the Dark Triad, and use it to accelerate the Qliphoth ritual's activation.

Spade Kingdom Raid Arc[]

The Clover Kingdom sends a team of mages to stop the Qliphoth ritual and rescue the Dark Triad's captives who split up to battle the Dark Triad. Initially, the team gets the upper hand against the Dark Triad with prepared measures, but the Qliphoth ritual opens the first gate, releasing hordes of devils from the first level and allowing the Dark Triad to access 100% of their devil power. With this new power, Dante is able to steadily overpower his opponent, Jack. However, Magna takes up the fight and uses a spell that equalizes their magic power, weakening Dante's devil power and cutting off his connection with Lucifero.

When the Dark Triad are defeated, Moris modifies the ritual to continue with only his magic and uses his contract with Lucifero to allow his magic to counter Dorothy's Dream Magic. After Moris defeat Dorothy, Lucifero reveals that he has prepared a method to escape early after the second gate opens.

After the Black Bulls defeat Moris, Lucifero sacrifices his magic and life force to further accelerate the ritual and open the second gate. This unleashes a new wave of devils from the second level, but it also allows Lucifero to enact his plan. He takes control of the emerging devils along the remaining devils from the first floor and forces them to combine into a giant monstrous mass for him to manifest into. The creature also absorbs the captive Yami and William to continue the ritual until he can fully manifest and bursts out of the castle before unleashing a crushing force of gravity throughout the area. However, the Black Bull combine the rest of their base with the remains of the castle to create a giant stone warrior they use to battle the creature. Despite taking blow after blow, the creature continually regenerates and steadily gains more power the longer the ritual continues. Before it can become too strong to stop, Asta attacks the creature with a massive Anti-Magic slash that bisect it, frees Yami and William, and dispels the ritual.

Although the ritual is stopped most of the creature is destroyed, it was active long enough for the Supreme Devil of the second level, Adramelech, to escape and Lucifero is able to merge the creature's remaining flesh into an incompletely body he is able manifests half his essence into. Upon finishing his manifestation, he immediately pins all the surrounding humans to the ground with his Gravity Magic. Asta and Liebe try to attack him by using Unite, but he easily blocks their sword with his hand and denies remembering Liebe when he asks if he recognizes him. When Lucifero realizes the two have managed to draw blood from him, he becomes furious and punches them into the Black Bull base. Before he can finish them off, the Magic Knight captains intervene and confront Lucifero. Despite being enhanced by Rill's support spell, the captains are unable to harm Lucifero and he effortlessly overpowers them and demands they despair before him. The Magic Knights refuse to surrender and Asta attacks Lucifero from behind, but Lucifero ducks out of the way and Asta only cuts off some of his horns. Infuriated at being harmed again, Lucifero slams Asta and Liebe into the ground and undoes their Unite. The captains work to save Asta, but they are no match for Lucifero who defeats all of them except Mereoleona. He then prepares to crush Asta under his foot, but he is teleported to safety by Yuno who entrusts him to Mimosa for healing. Yuno and Mereleona team up to face Lucifero, who become bored with the fight and orders Ardramelech to deal with them while he kills Asta. However, Adramelech refuses and Lucifero is forced to fight the pair, with Mereoleona pushing her body to point she can longer fight, and Yuno being forced to the brink of defeat.

Realizing Anti-Magic is their only way to defeat Lucifero, Nacht tries to restrain Lucifero with his Shadow Magic long enough for barely recovered Asta to strike. However, Lucifero disperses the shadows and prepares to attack the incoming Asta, only to be blocked by Yami, who had received new power from being exposed to the Qliphoth ritual and was given a blade by William containing all the latter's magic. Lucifero repels Yami and Nacht and tries to kill Asta, only to be stalled by Zora, Secre, and Vanessa, who combine their magics to send the power of one of his Gravity-boosted punches back at him a double strength, only for him to block it. Their efforts buy enough time for Yami and Nacht to create a combined spell that uses the synergy between their Dark and Shadow Magic to strengthen each other and allows Yami to injure Lucifero. Although he quickly heals, Lucifero acknowledges the humans have the power to defeat him and decides to unleash the full power of his half-manifestation to destroy them and all of humanity.

After Lucifero transforms to unleash his body's full power, Nacht, Yami, Asta, and Yuno work together to fight him. However, Nacht, Yami, and Yuno's attempt to land a surprise attack fails and the former two get impaled on limbs made from his transformed wins, leaving Asta the only one left standing. Just before Lucifero can land a killing blow, Asta and Liebe are able to achieve a perfect form of Unite and block his punch with their sword. Lucifero is baffled by this feat and throws another punch to their face, but it doesn't faze them at all. At that point, he realizes their Anti-Magic has grown strong enough to negate all magic on anything they touch, nullifying his Gravity-boosted strength. Asta then slashes off some of Lucifero's horns and the limbs impaling Yami and Nacht before kicking him back. As Lucifero's attacks continue to do nothing against their perfected Unite, he recognizes them as the children of Licita, the woman who interfered with his attempt to manifest years ago. Asta and Liebe then cut off his arms and slice him into pieces just before their Unite ends, leaving only his upper body intact. Infuriated that he was laid low by those he deemed worthless, Lucifero pins everyone with Gravity, but Yami and Nacht negate it and Asta wills himself to rise, terrifying the king of devils. He attempts to flee to recovery and obtain his full power, but Yuno teleports him back into Asta's reach and he slams his sword down on Lucifero, knocking him unconscious and defeating him. Afterward, Adramelech pulls out Lucifero's heat, causing the body to disintegrate and eventually brings it to Lucius Zogratis.

Final Arc[]

Lucius Zogratis somehow travels into the Underworld and confronts the other half of Lucifero's essence in its lowest level. To his shock, Lucifero is defeated and left helpless trapped by a time spell. Lucifero wonders how he, who has the most powerful magic among Devils, could lose and Lucius explains that while Devils possess greater magic power, humans are more skilled at using it. Lucius takes out Lucifero's heart and eats it, absorbing the Devil King's magic power and Gravity Attribute.

Powers and Abilities[]

World Doomed

The state of the world if Lucifero were to be released.

Being a high-ranking devil, Lucifero is an immensely powerful being. In addition to this, however, he is said to operate within the lowest level of the underworld, which would make him one of, if not, the strongest among his kind, as devils that operate within the lower region are more powerful than the ones above. Nacht believes that if Lucifero were to be unleashed upon their world, their world would ultimately be doomed.

Lucifero has not shown the full extent of his powers yet, but he has been distributing his powers to his host, Dante. Lucifero at half of his manifestation was powerful enough to overwhelm everyone around him instantly with his magic, having them forcibly submit and prostrate themselves down to the ground instantly. His mere existence alone is described to be overwhelming to force everything in existence down beneath him, including fate itself.

Despite his manifestation only being half complete, he still directly and easily overpowered high level mages in rapid succession with one, even taking down all of them Magic Knight Captains with a single blow, while not even fighting seriously. After being wounded while fighting Asta, Nacht ,Yami, and Yuno, he deemed them worthy of using the full power at his disposal, and proceeded to defeat the latter three within minutes. Only when Asta achieved a true Devil's Union was he able overpower the King of Devils. However, while it's true that Asta defeated him, he only just barely managed to do that even while Lucifero was effectively at half strength.

Powers[]

Lucifero warps space to destroy magic

Lucifero tearing through space with Gravity Magic.

  • Gravity Magic: Gravity Magic allows the user to control and manipulate gravity itself. With this magic, the user is able levitate objects in the air, including themselves, as well as black holes that rip through everything around its gravitational pull. He has also demonstrated the ability to warp space itself and affect mere concepts with this magic. His main use of it is to increase the weight and physical force of his stirkes.
  • Devil Possession: Like many devils, Lucifero is capable of taking control of others, making their bodies his hosts. In Lucifero's case, he appears to possess a specific kind of devil possession that allows him to take control of his own kind, specifically those below him, allowing him to see wherever they go. In a way, this grants him an omniscient present among the devils. This ability also allows him to possess countless devils at once and combine them into a body for him to control and fully manifest himself into.

Trivia[]

  • Lucifero is Italian for the name Lucifer, a name associated with many mythological beings that have fallen from grace, as well as the planet Venus when it appears as the Morning Star. It is commonly well known for being associated with Satan, however.
