Lucio Liberan (shortly known as Lucio) is a supporting antagonist in FPJ’s Batang Quiapo.
He was a member of Quiapo’s notorious gangsters led by Primo Medina who abandoned their gang after blaming Primo and Medina for losing his wife Yolly. Later on, he becomes the commander of Tondo Gang working in Red Phoenix and later the group’s leader after his betrayal to Angkong.
He is played by Ronnie Lazaro.
Background[]
At some point in time, he became one of the notorious gangsters in Quiapo involved in robbery alongside with Primo Medina who worked under Augustus Pacheco. Later on, Augustus trapped the gang to arrest Primo allowing him and the rest of the gang escape in Augustus’ set-up. The gang continued their criminal activities in Quiapo, and he started a black market business involved in selling stolen jewelries. Later on, Primo was released in jail and continued the gang continued robbing in their area.
As he continued working with Primo, he helped the latter save Amanda from the hands of Augustus and invited his wife to help them in their duel with Augustus. One time, Augustus’ men have attacked Primo’s gang causing the deaths of Amanda’s parents. Amanda blames Yolly for her parents’ misfortune causing his grudge to Amanda. Later on, as the group was involved to another shootout with Augustus’ group, this time Yolly was shot causing him to have delusions that Primo and Amanda are the ones responsible for killing his wife. During Yolly’s wake, Augustus’ men have terrorized them allowing them to fight back until he managed to shot Mulong avenging his wife’s death.
He abandoned the gang grievingly, and eventually managed to meet Tondo Gang after helping them run away from the cops. One day, he crossed path with Angkong and Roy saving them from Salazar’s men who attempted to assassinate them. Angkong later recruits him in Red Phoenix and learns that their common nemesis is Amanda. Later on, he faced Primo and Tanggol during their shootout with Ramon Montenegro wherein he shot Primo and failed to assassinate Ramon. The failed assassination of Ramon, made Roy disgust him. One day, he crossed path again with Ramon and his goons shoot him and believed that they have exterminated Ramon. He later raided Primo’s hideout after Red Phoenix learns that Tanggol has stolen the Star of Venus and confirms that Primo survived causing an intense shootout with his men and Primo’s group. With his failure to steal the Star of Venus, this disappointed Lucio causing them to exchange insults until they were stopped by Angkong. With his humiliation to the Red Phoenix, he plans to manipulate them as his plan to take them down and rebuild their syndicate under the control with his hands.
Later on, after Roy and Mr. Wu was killed in their assassination attempt to Augustus, he executes his plan to assassinate Angkong during a transaction with the help of Santino. Upon betraying Angkong, he proclaims himself as the new Angkong of Red Phoenix.
Personality[]
In his introduction, he is shown that he is highly obsessed with wealth such as huge sum of money and expensive jewelries which makes him attracted every time he sees. His obsession of luxury, this also made him to be deceiving individual which was shown in his first appearance when Tanggol sells a stolen golden necklace whom he deceived. There was also a point that he decided to sell drugs for their gang’s personal gain which was rejected by Primo.
During his days when he was working with Primo and the gang, he was known to be their brains of the gang due to that he is skilled in creating strategies in any battles. With his intelligence, this also makes him to be manipulative individual who’s capable of manipulating anyone arounds him such as the Red Phoenix whom he plans to use them for his personal gain and eventually dispose them once he finds out that they will be useless to his plan and rebuild the syndicate under his command. Besides of his obsession of wealth, his cleverness also makes him to be deceiving individual.
In the early episodes, he was seen to be sympathetic to his gang members such as Primo as they believe that their friendship is their brotherhood. However, in the later episodes despite of leaving his former gang he remained sympathetic anyone who is genuinely helping him in his plan such as Tondo Gang. With their broken bonds with Primo and Amanda, he held grudge to them, having delusions that they are the ones who brought Yolly to her misfortune. With his delusions that Primo and Amanda is the one responsible for his wife’s death, he became obsessed in extracting his vengeance causing his connection with the former gang to fall apart.
As a husband, he was seen throughout the scenes he was with Yolly that he continued fighting for his love despite of their near broken marriage. Upon he reconciled with his wife, it was shown that he genuinely loved his wife who even protected them some Amanda’s blaming from the latter’s parents’ demise. Due to his extreme love to Yolly whom he lose, this made him bear grudge to Amanda whom he blames that she was the one responsible for her death after Amanda blamed her. With his genuinely sympathetic personality, this may qualify him as an anti-villain and not truly evil at all.
