Yes! Me! It was me! All me! I hate Sarah Bernhardt! I hate courtesans with poisonous charms!
~ Lucy Ware Hayes, disguised as George, revealing herself as the culprit behind the tour's sabotage.

Lucy Ware Hayes is the main antagonist of the Lucky Luke comic Sarah Bernhardt. She is the wife of president Rutherford B. Hayes who attempts to sabotage the titular French actress, jealous of her popularity, also believing that her husband is infuriated with her. She is also known as George while in disguise.

Biography[]

When French actress Sarah Bernhardt comes to visit America, President Hayes tasks Lucky Luke to protect her against a legion that have pitted against her. Luke first accompanies Bernhardt on a private train, when suddenly the caboose of the train gets detached by a mysterious figure. As the train is uncontrollably rolling backwards, he manages to stop it on time by having a tree block the railroad. With the car reattached to the rest of the train, Bernhardt travels to Boston, where she is greeted by the locals.

After Sarah Bernhardt was gifted a deceased whale and was brought on the train, a mysterious figure steals all of the food supplies, leaving all of the boxes empty so no one would not be able to eat. This plan is thwarted when Luke decides to use the whale as food, but Sarah doesn't like it at all and tells Chouniard to keep the whale for himself.

Later, the mysterious figure blows up the train, making it useless to travel with. Sarah and Lucky Luke then take the River Queen ship to go on a tour, but as Sarah and the ship's captain were about to get a picture by a suspicious photographer, someone had sawed the railing, causing both of them to fall overboard, down into the water. Despite this, the criminal is caught by Luke and forced to jump out of the boat and swim away, with alligators pursuing him. However, the same figure who sawed the railing pierced a hole on the boat, causing water to flood the boat, slowly sinking as everyone escapes.

Sarah is now forced to use Smith's wagons to go to Stonebrook City, as going on foot would cost her career. As her belongings are set up inside, a blond man named George tells Lucky Luke that everything is ready. On the way to Stonebrook City, Luke sets up a camp for the night. As Chouniard was taking a walk outside the camp, George asks him to make a small pie, despite Luke not allowing any fire to be made, but then convinces him that only one small fire is needed to cook it. This alerts the Indians who were watching on a nearby cliff, deciding to warn their chief about it. Luke notices the smoke and wakes up, noticing the small fire George had asked Chouniard to make for his small pie. Luke then kicks the fire out and tells everyone that they are leaving, but a group of Indians who were warned earlier blocks their path and captures them.

Chouniard reveals that George was insisting for the fire to made, meaning that he was the one who got them captured by the Indians. Not only that, Luke reveals that George was the one who sabotaged the tour ever since New York, being the one who sunk the River Queen, stole the food supplies, blew up the uncoupled car of the train and sawed the railing to make Sarah fall out of the ship earlier. George finally admits that he was the one behind everything and Luke reveals that George was only the disguise of Lucy Ware Hayes, the president's wife who had an envious hatred for Sarah Bernhardt's poisonous charms. George's blond hair is removed by the Indians, revealing that she was really a woman in disguise the entire time. This leads to Lucy being freed and able to leave, fully reforming herself by saving Sarah and everyone else by knocking out the Indian guarding them, as the other Indians were distracted by Sarah Bernahardt's performance.

Lucy finally admits that she was wrong about Sarah's poisonous charms and reunites with her husband, watching Sarah's performance. She is not seen again afterwards.
