Vogel: Dr. Kurtz. You have memorized the new orders, yes? Did you burn after reading?

Kurtz: Ja, Vogel. And I thought security was tight before the accident. Do you think we can actually accomplish what the Reichstag is asking for?
Vogel: I would not have suggested it if I did not think it was achievable, But let us guard against overconfidence. If we do not deliver, they will find someone who can. And I am not about to give control of this discovery. All we need is to send through a few volunteers to measure the specific relativistic differential...
Kurtz: Volunteers?! Would you take on such a task?
Vogel: Mind your words, Dr. Kurtz. I would hate for someone to question your commitment.
Kurtz: You, are recording this?
Vogel: What we do now will ensure The Chancellor's dream of a thousand year Reich. There must be a record.

~ Dr. Lukas Kurtz and Dr. Ulrich Vogel discuss about new orders.
The tea... (coughing) what have... (coughs) done, Aleksandra...
~ Lukas Kurtz's last words after getting poisoned by Aleksandra Valentina by putting poison in his tea for not allowing her to join the KGB and Omega Group before his death.

Doctor Lukas Kurtz aka Ivan Valentin is a character and a minor antagonist featured in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies and appeared in Die Maschine, mentioned in Outbreak and appeared on intel in Mauer Der Toten. Kurtz was the Doctor and Assistant of Dr. Ulrich Vogel and worked at Projekt Endstation during World War II and created a zombie army called Task Force Baldr and later after the World War II ended, Kurtz defected to the Soviet Union along with Aleksandra Valentina.

Biography[]

World War II[]

Little nothing is known about Kurtz's early life, only that he was born in Germany sometime before World War II. What is known, however, is that alongside Dr. Ulrich Vogel, Kurtz is responsible for the development of a proposed particle accelerator known as the Cyclotron, leading into the creation and funding Projekt Endstation. He would work with Vogel along with the Scientists chiefly in a facility in Morasko within the occupied territories of Poland since The Reich have gained. In 1944, Vogel and Kurtz performed the test of the Cyclotron. During the process, the particle accelerator malfunctioned and opened a localized rift between their world and the Dark Aether. Creatures started coming through the gateway and men close to the collider began to necrotize and turn into zombies. The small outbreak was contained but the Cyclotron was now operating on its own without external source of power. The Necrotized soldiers sparked the interest of Adolf Hitler and the German High Command, with Projekt Endstation being able to separate a material from their corpses that they would name Exo-Element 1, with Kurtz himself suggesting it to be called Vogelium. Vogel began work on a decontamination chamber that could reverse the condition of necrotized soldiers, believing they could be used as an undead army for the Reich. On April 3rd, it would be completed and named Der Weschler by Kurtz. A new Endstation Facility would be established beneath Berlin in 1944. On November 15th, Kurtz would develop lures and an Exo-Element 1 harvester which could only collect essence from Tempests. As World War II draw to an end, a contingency plan known as Operation Baldr came into effect, which would send an army into the Dark Aether to summon in case of Germany's defeat. Vogel oversaw preparations of Operation Baldr, and on January 27th, 1945, ordered all personnel to evacuate the Morasko facility. Vogel would personally task Kurtz with a mission of his own to raise his daughter, Angelika in his stead. He and Angelika would flee the facility, while Vogel stayed behind to ensure Operation Baldr's success. On February 3rd, Projekt Endstation would be discovered by the 8th Guards Army of the Red Army. A week later, a cleaning crew led by NKVD Colonel Pavel Lazarev would send Kazimir Zykov into the abandoned facility to eventually shut down the cyclotron. Kurtz and Angelika would be captured by The Soviets on February 21st, and Lazarev would personally interrogate Kurtz. During the interrogation, Lazarev demanded he tell where the rest of the Projekt Endstation scientists fled to or he would harm Angelika. Kurtz agreed, but only if he spared Angelika and himself. Lazarev accepted, telling Kurtz he could continue his work for the Soviet that Angelika would be given a proper Bolshevik Education. He and Angelika would move to the Soviet Union, renaming themselves Ivan Valentin and Aleksandra Valentina.

Life in the Soviet Union and Death[]

During this time in the Soviet Union, Aleksandra would be considered by the Soviets to be Kurtz's Daughter. However, Aleksandra never truly viewed him as her father, instead constantly referring to him as her Uncle. At some point in his life, Kurtz took up ownership of a factory which he had Aleksandra work at, refusing to allow her to pursue an academic career after witnessing what happened to Ulrich and his experiments. Unbeknownst to him, Aleksandra would sneak out at night anyway and study books about microbiology, biochemistry and physics. On April 25, 1960, at the age of 16, Valentina received a letter stating that she was accepted to the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology to Kurtz's disapproval. Valentina revealed that her father told her to complete her work using the exact words Vogel told Kurtz 15 years prior. Surprised, enraged and agitated, Kurtz burned the acceptance letter. The next day, Valentina brought tea to Kurtz but denounced him for abandoning Operation Baldr. Later on, Valentina poisoned his tea and he died shortly after with Soviet authorities concluded he died from a heart attack. Valentina joined Omega Group after Kurtz's death.

Legacy[]

Later on, in her life, Aleksandra would mention her uncle to William Peck. She would falsely accuse him of imprisoning her in his basement, and later lie about his death, stating she slit his throat.

Quotes[]

Kurtz: Dr. Vogel, the upgrades are completed we are ready for the test, but I ran the numbers again, and...

Vogel: Ja, ja. You are still worried we could have a containment failure.
Kurtz: Keeping the dimensional barrier open for that long will redline every system in the cyclotron. I cannot promise she would hold together.
Vogel: Kurtz, do you pay any attention to reports from the Eastern Front? we do this now. before the Red Army arrives, or we do not do it at all!
Kurtz: Of course, of course. I just thought we should go into this with our eyes open.
Vogel: Understood, my dear Kurtz. But if we can change the course o the war, any risk is worth taking.

~ Kurtz and Vogel about the containment failure.
Lazarev: This is Colonel Pavel Lazarev, interrogating prisoner Lukas Kurtz on the second of feburary, 1945. Dr. Kurtz, you worked at Projekt Endstation. Why did you and so others desert the facility?

Kurtz: We were ordered to evacuate. We did our duty to the Fatherland. And that is all you will get out of me.
Lazarev: I lost 14 men shutting the mess you left behind, so I have very little patience for bravado or delays of any sort. You will talk.
Kurtz: Do what you want to me, I don't care anymore.
Lazarev: Perhaps not, Dr. Kurtz. But if you do not immediately tell me where the rest of the Endstation staff went, I will have that little girl we found hiding with you shot.
Kurtz: No, wait! Angelika has done nothing! She only sought shelter from the fighting!
Lazarev: She matters to you, and for that she will die.
Kurtz: Kill her and you lose leverage you have over me. But, I am willing to strike a bargain if it will save her life.
Lazarev: Go on.
Kurtz: I will tell you where the rest of the Endstation staff are hiding only if you agree to spare Angelika and allow me to look after her.
Lazarev: An interesting proposal. But even I would not consign a child to be raised as a Nazi. So here is my counter proposal, You come back to Mother Russia and continue your work, for me. She will receive a proper Bolshevik education and becomes a productive member of society. But only if you give up your comrades.
Kurtz: How do I know you will keep your end of the bargain?
Lazarev: Because you are going to make yourself too valuable to execute. Starting right fucking now. Understood?
Kurtz: Bring a map. I will give you names and locations...

~ Kurtz and Lazarev during the interrogation.
Kurtz: I was hoping you could enlighten me to the meaning of the envelope I received today. "Dear Miss Valentina. On behalf of the Committee on Admissions your application to the Moscow institute of Physics and Technology has been formally accepted." We had an agreement! Anything you wanting in life, I would support you, except one thing!

Valentina: Uncle, please I can explain...
Kurtz: You promised me that you gave up this foolish pursuit! Do you know where this road leads?! I have seen it, Lived it. Horror that you could not possibly imagine!
Valentina: But, But I am good at it. The world out there, the factory, I do not understand. but this, physics and microbiology...
Kurtz: I saw what it did to your father! It took years before I understood the pain we caused, the atrocities we commited. I will not allow you to follow in his path.
Valentina: You do not understand, I must! He told you I must complete his work. "Take her, Teach her. Be there, both of you, when Operation Baldr bears fruit."
Kurtz: What did you say? How would you possibly know that? This acceptance letter is going in the trash, better yet, the fire.
Valentina: No!
Kurtz: We shall not speak of this again.

~ Kurtz and Valentina argued about the Acceptance Letter and his Villainous Breakdown.
Kurtz: Aleksandra. Is it time for tea already?

Valentina: Yes, Uncle. Be careful, It is quite hot.
Kurtz: Tea can never be too hot. Aleksandra, Can I have a moment, Please? About our discussion yesterday, I know you may not appreciate it now. But please understand my only concern for your well being. Your father was a complicated man. It was a different time, What we did was, wrong. I only wish to protect you from the mistakes we made.
Valentina: I understand, Uncle Lukas. But I do not agree.
Kurtz: I am sorry, What did you say?
Valentina: My father was a boiling man, And you were a pathetic worm lurking in his shadow.
Kurtz: How dare you...
Valentina: How dare I? How dare you denounce his work! How dare you sit there and feed me lies!
Kurtz: Careful, Aleksandra, your father...

~ Kurtz and Valentina during tea time and his final moments after drinking the poisoned tea and before his death.
