A fanatical leader hell-bent on bringing about the apocalypse by reviving the great Cthulhu through behind-the-scenes scheming.
~ The Lunatic Cultist's bestiary entry.

The Lunatic Cultist is the main antagonist of Terraria.

He is a fanatical cult leader worshipping the Moon Lord, responsible for the kidnapping of the Mechanic and the creation of the Dungeon and the three mechanical replicas of the Eye of Cthulhu, Eater of Worlds and Skeletron to prepare for his return.

He is a Hard Mode-exclusive boss fought after the Golem is defeated. Beating him will begin the Lunar Events, which culminate in the return of his master.

Biography[]

The Lunatic Cultist has presumably been around for a long time, given that one of his monikers is "Ancient Cultist". At some point he founded or became the leader of a cult that worships Cthulhu and aims to lead the world to destruction by summoning him. The cult came to inhabit the Dungeon after the Lunatic Cultist cast a curse upon its inhabitants that drove them mad and turned them into undead monsters. The cult also enslaved the Old Man who oversaw the Dungeon and cursed him to be possessed by Skeletron. The Old Man was also responsible for kidnapping the Mechanic under the cult's orders and forcing her to create the mechanical bosses. Eventually the Terrarian came along and destroyed the cult's machinations one by one, also freeing the Old Man and the Mechanic from their grasp.

After the defeat of the Golem, a group of cultists appear at the Dungeon's entrance, worshiping a mystical tablet with an image of the Moon Lord engraved in it. Once the devotees are slain, the Lunatic Cultist appears to fight the player himself. The Lunatic Cultist's main form of attack is firing elemental balls, ranging from being made of fire, electricity, thunder, light, or darkness, with light appearing after the Lunatic Cultist takes enough damage and darkness in the game's Expert Mode. After cycling through these attacks, he summons a faux version of himself (Known as an "Ancient Cultist"), which fires their own balls of fire. The only way to beat these duplicates safely is to attack the Lunatic Cultist as he does his ritual. Taking too long to beat the Lunatic Cultist might spawn a large wyvern known as the Phantasm Dragon.

Once defeated, the Lunar Events activate as the Lunatic Cultist dies. After the Lunar Events complete, the player can go back and fight the Lunatic Cultist to retrigger them.

Appearance[]

The Lunatic Cultist is humanoid but it's uncertain whether he's actually human or not, given his bleach-white skin and clawed hands in official artwork. He seems to wear a plague doctor-like mask to obscure his face and wears a blue robe with gold lining, obscuring his hands and feet. He is slightly taller than the player and other humanoids.

Personality[]

Told in lore and in-game bestiary descriptions, the cultist is true to his name of being an utter lunatic. A sadistic fanatic and madman willing to doom the world to eldritch horrors, being devoted to the Moon Lord to the point he is willing to resort to using his remains to bring him back. He holds no care for his follows should they die by the hands of the Players, only focusing on summoning his master to destroy the world. He can be heard laughing during his fight with the player, showing that he takes pleasure in killing. He's also presumably quite cunning despite his stated insanity given that he leads a large operation, and he's shown to be knowledgeable with matters of the supernatural.

Trivia[]

  • The Lunatic Cultist is the smallest boss in the game, the only human(oid) boss, and the only boss that lacks an awakening message.
  • The Lunatic Cultist's attacks seem to be based on each of the Lunar Events' Pillar's properties.
  • The Lunatic Cultist has a themed Expert Mode Treasure Bag in the game's files, but it is currently unused.
  • The "lunatic" part of the Lunatic Cultist's name is a pun, both coming from his mentally-ill mind and his relation to the moon, as ancient people believed the moon to cause insanity.
  • The Lunatic Cultist was once a well-intentioned extremist, as the developers had stated in the past that the cult were trying to keep Cthulhu sealed and prevent the player from summoning him. The official lore changed the cult's mission to be causing the apocalypse by releasing Cthulhu, turning them into more straightforward villains.
