Lupton is a major antagonist in the Doctor Who story "Planet of the Spiders".

He was portrayed by the late John Dearth who also voiced BOSS in The Green Death.

Biography[]

Lupton spent twenty years working as an insurance salesman, rising to sales director. When the company was taken over, he was made redundant, with the new owners deliberately wrecking his attempt to set up his own company. He headed to the meditation centre being run by Time Lords K'Anpo and Cho-Je under the guise of Tibetan monks, seeking to find some power he could use for his revenge. He managed to gather together a small group of followers who joined him in carrying out ceremonies to contact a power elsewhere. He realised Mike Yates had seen one of the ceremonies and summoned journalist Sarah Jane Smith, so attempted to kill them by placing a hallucination of a tractor in front of their car, causing them to nearly crash.

Lupton's next ceremony finally succeeded in making a link with the Metebelis Spiders in the future. One of their number was transported to Earth, where it merged with Lupton, forming a symbiotic relationship. Lupton's mind remained clear but he could hear the telepathic instructions of the spider and also manifested some of the spider's abilities, such as the ability to shoot webs of energy from his hand. The spider tried to force his co-operation by causing him pain mentally but Lupton soon learned how to reverse the trick. The spider instead suggested they work together to seek power over their respective worlds.

The spider directed Lupton to find the blue crystal removed from Metebelis III by the Doctor. He headed to UNIT HQ, stunning first a soldier and then Sergeant Benton, and was able to teleport the crystal from the Doctor's laboratory to his hand. A lengthy chase ensued, with Lupton first stealing the Whomobile and then a gyrocopter. He attacked two men at a boat yard and stole a speedboat. When the Doctor nearly caught him by hovercraft, the spiders used their powers to teleport Lupton back to the meditation centre.

Lupton and the spider made plans to take the crystal to Metebelis III but it was stolen by Tommy, a mentally handicapped man living at the centre, forcing them to return without it. Lupton decided to bluff the spider council, saying the crystal was hidden away until they received a reward. The Queen Spider responded by revealing the Doctor and Sarah had followed the pair to Metebelis III. Lupton personally captured Sarah when she broke curfew, then attempted to intervene in a confrontation between the Doctor and a group of guards, ordering the Doctor killed, only to find himself placed under arrest: The Queen Spider had learned the crystal was still on Earth. Lupton again turned the tables, reiterating they were the only ones who knew where it was. The Queen Spider responded by announcing she would consult the Great One.

With his spider ally now in charge of the council, Lupton wanted to return to Earth to get the crystal but found he was no match for the spiders' combined mental abilities as they refused to give in to his demands. Lupton remained little more than an observer as the spiders sent more of their number to Earth to ally with his followers. When the Doctor returned with the crystal but insisted he would only give it to the Great One rather than the council, Lupton tried to take the crystal from him but was stopped by the spiders, who were afraid to challenge the Great One. After the Doctor had gone, Lupton angrily berated the spiders for throwing away their chance of power, repeatedly referring to them as "spiders" rather than their preferred name "Eight-Legs", and raised a hand to crush his ally only for her to kill him with an energy burst.
