That's what I like to hear, absolutely nothing.
~ Lutador silencing Vivo when capturing him.

Lutador is a minor antagonist in Sony Pictures Animation's 22nd feature film Vivo. He is a Burmese python who lives in the Everglades swamp and detests noise of any kind. One day, Lutador's peace is interrupted by a kinkajou named Vivo, leading the snake to focus on devouring Vivo to get back at him for disturbing him. Thankfully, Vivo is rescued by two spoonbills named Dancarino and Valentina.

He was voiced by Michael Rooker, who also played Dark Winged Vesper in Super Capers, Henry in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, The Bone Collector in the film of the same name, Grant Grant in Slither, Merle Dixon in The Walking Dead, Vikke in Lollipop Chainsaw, Bud Melks in The Belko Expirament, Yondu Udonta in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and Savant in The Suicide Squad.

Biography

For some time, Lutador kept his part of the Everglades swamp free of noise by terrifying the other inhabitants into staying quiet. He did so by threatening to eat anything that made noise even just above a whisper.

One day, a kinkajou named Vivo came into Lutador's part of the swamp, yelling out for his friend, Gabi. An iguana tries to help by telling Vivo to be quiet, but Vivo is already frustrated and even yells, "I'M BEING QUIET!". When the iguana sees Lutador, he slowly backs away out of fear, although Vivo assumes he's backing away from him. He continues walking while asking in another yell, "Who cares about a little noise?". At that moment, he is immediately wrapped in the giant coils of a snake and is pulled up to the trees. He soon sees the owner of the coils, who answers, "Me."

Vivo immediately screams out of fear, up until Lutador shushes him by covering his little mouth with his tail tip. Lutador starts the conversation by complimenting Vivo's 'lovely voice' (due to Lutador's sensitive hearing, he probably heard the kinkajou singing from another part of the swamp.) He then comments on how he's never seen Vivo around his part of the swamp. When he introduces himself and asks for the kinkajou's name, he exclaims in disgust upon learning his name that he hates it. Lutador then states that his 'new name' is, "Noisy. Noisy the Singing Rat." Although, Vivo politely tells him that he's actually a kinkajou, which Lutador describes as sounding 'exotic'.

Lutador then tells the terrified kinkajou that he hates noise and has made it clear to the other inhabitants of the swamp area that they must be quiet in order to stay alive. He shows him by turning his face towards some other other animals that clearly know that; A group of frogs that hold their breaths to keep from croaking, a bird that taps very softly on wood, and two dolphins that fearfully and quietly play with a lotus flower. Lutador then states that that's what he likes to hear..."Absolutely nothing."

Vivo immediately tries to apologize and promise not to make anymore noise and stay quiet. But Lutador responds that he knows he will be quiet, even 'deathly silent,’ as all his meals are. He then tries to eat Vivo by tossing him into his mouth, but Vivo escapes by grasping his tail onto a nearby branch and starts running up a tree. Lutador immediately chases after him while delighting in the kinkajou's desperation to live. When they finally run out of tree, Vivo realizes he has no choice but to make a leap of faith. But Lutador jumps as well and comes close to eating Vivo. However, right at the last second, a Roseate Spoonbill named Dancarino swoops down and pulls Vivo safely out of harm's way, and Lutador ends up falling back down into the swamp.

Lutador survives the fall and soon goes after a ten-year-old girl named Gabi and three other girls in uniform known as the Sand Dollars. Gabi calls for Vivo until she sees rustling grass and assumes it's him. When Lutador reveals his giant self, Gabi immediately screams and runs, also alerting the other girls. They try to run towards their boat, but Lutador beats them to it, causing them to flee in the opposite direction. They soon try to hide in the roots of a mangrove tree, but Lutador traps them and tries to break the roots apart. The girls try to fight back by throwing things from Gabi's backpack at him. Gabi tries using Silly String, but the can is empty. She chuckles sheepishly before throwing the empty can directly at Lutador's face, which angers him further.

Lutador manages to break the roots apart, but just before he can consume the girls, he hears a familiar voice call to him. It is Vivo, who has heard the girls screaming while riding Dancarino. Vivo gets Lutador to come after him by making more noise by banging sticks on a tree like a drum. Lutador tells the girls that he'll be right back before slithering after Vivo. A chase ensues through the trees, which leads to Lutador asking, "Still running up trees, Noisy? You rats never learn, do you?" Vivo is close to being eaten until finally, he runs between two branches that Lutador is too big to get through as easily. The giant snake momentarily gets stuck, which helps Vivo come up with a plan on how to defeat him.

Lutador angrily frees himself and shouts, "You can't run forever!" However, Vivo responds, "Sure, I can. Back in Havana, I do five shows a day." Vivo then starts a musical number, 'Tough Crowd,’ as he gets a gleeful Lutador to chase him back and forth, up and down across one particular tree. By the end of the song, the enormous python has unwittingly been tricked into tying himself in a giant knot around the tree, thereby effectively putting a stop to his reign of terror. While Vivo receives cheers of praise for his heroism, a trapped Lutador yells "Get me out of here!" as he furiously tries to get unstuck, but to no avail.

Lutador is not seen for the rest of the film, but it can be safely assumed that unless someone helped free him, he remains tied around a tree in the Everglades for the rest of his life.

Personality

Lutador is a very menacing and cruel snake who has inspired fear throughout the animals in the Everglades bayou. He really detests noise and thus longs for peace and quiet and will intimidate and even eat anyone who does not adhere to this want, which causes the animals in his part of the swamp to not make any noise out of fear of being eaten. He also seems to have a knack for feigning politeness before intimidating his prey.

Appearance

Lutador is a giant Burmese python with dark green triangle-shaped scales around his body and a pair of sharp teeth and teal eyes. He also has a purple tongue.

Trivia

  • Lutador's name means "fighter" in Portuguese. This, of course, reflects on the scenes where he fights against Vivo to try and kill him, only to fail when Vivo climbs up a tree and gets taken away by Dancarino and Valentina the spoonbills.
  • Despite being a Burmese python, Lutador strongly resembles an anaconda because of his green skin and size that is much larger for an actual python (regular Burmese pythons have between nineteen to twenty-three feet while he looks to be twenty-six), however, there are no real life pythons that have the same appearance as him.
    • His giant size and green skin could also be to reflect on his mean-spirited, ruthless nature and desire to eat anything that disturbs his slumber, as well as to help camouflage in with the rest of the Everglades swamps, which is mostly dark green in color.
  • Snakes are usually deaf in real life, which makes Lutador's hatred of noise all the more understandable.
  • Lutador's species, the Burmese python, happens to be invasive in Florida. This may explain another reason for why the animals who live in his territory are scared of him, as pythons have been capable of eating almost anything in the Everglades, especially at a large size.
    • Lutador is also implied to have knowledge on Asian wildlife, as he asks Vivo if he is a gibbon. But as his name has a Portuguese meaning, it's likely that he was hatched in the swamps and was told about his family history by another Burmese python.
  • Lutador is the largest Sony Pictures Animation villain to date.
