Villain Overview

Sinful filth like you has no place in Heaven!
~ Lute’s infamous quote to Vaggie as she cuts her left eye out and rips her angelic wings off, turning her into another fallen angel (like Lucifer), as punishment for her betrayal of sparing a sinner child.
Adam is dead, your deal is done, and I’m in charge now. Your brat is threatening the very foundation of Heaven, and if you want to stay here, you’re going down there and stopping that bitch! You understand me, Lilith?
~ Lute as she threatens Lilith to stop her daughter, Charlie, after she prevented the Extermination or else she will be kicked out of Heaven.

Lute is one of the three secondary antagonists (alongside Vox and Valentino) of Season 1 of the adult animated series Hazbin Hotel.

She is an Exorcist angel and Adam's right hand woman and best friend who helps him in the yearly Exterminations, where they try to kill as many Sinners as they can so that they won’t plot a rebellion against Heaven, and simply for the fun of it. Upon Adam's death, she becomes the Exorcists' new leader after losing Adam and her left arm. She is the former superior-turned-archenemy of Vaggie.

She is voiced by Jessica Vosk.

Appearance[]

Lute appears to have a near identical appearance to other Exorcists. The only visual differences appear to be that her halo and right pupil are black with a white glow instead of white, and she has bloodstains on her dress. While in Heaven, she wears the same style dress but switches it for a clean one.

Without her mask, she looks more human, but still darker and more sinister than most residents of Heaven. She has pale white hair and light violet skin. This may be typical of the Exorcists, as Vaggie has the same skin and hair tones.

In the Season 1 finale, Lute tears off her left arm once it's crushed by rubble so she can continue fighting in the Extermination.

Personality[]

Lute is Adam's stoic subordinate who is always by his side. She and Adam appear to have a friendly relationship, with Adam complimenting her on her large kill count, and Lute joining him in his antics. Like Adam, she enjoys her status as an Angel and dislikes the very idea that Angels can make mistakes. Lute especially shows a sadistic side in demeaning Charlie Morningstar, specifically on how her father feels about her.

Like all Exorcists, she doesn't care about Sinners and resorts to killing them every year in the extermination, and takes pride in how many demons she's killed. In fact, based on her interaction with Charlie, Lute would be happy to target all denizens of Hell, Sinner and Hellborn alike, during the Exterminations, which shows a high bloodlust for an angel. However, when they discover a deceased exorcist, Lute is furious at their death and desires retribution, demanding they return to destroy every demon immediately to make sure demons don't have the chance to overthrow Heaven, as she sees the exorcist's death as the demons trying to retaliate against Heaven.

Despite her horrible traits she does have one good trait, and that is that she seems to genuinely like and care about Adam, being his loyal right-hand woman and favorite exterminator (after Vaggie's fall from grace). During their screen-time together they are rarely apart, and she is quick to join her boss on his gloating or his musical numbers without any prompting. Despite Adam's sexist and perverted attitude, she doesn't seem to be a target of the worst aspects of it, taking even his insults in stride and as a result isn't on bad terms with him. When Adam gets fatally backstabbed by Nifty, she's horrified and runs up to him, and is determined to avenge him upon returning to Heaven. Ironically this could be seen as a form of karma for Lute, seeing how this situation is like when she killed sinners for selfish and elitist reasons, now someone she cared about has been taken away from her, experiencing how sinners felt now, as Lute definitely didn't like it either.

As Vaggie notes, Lute is pathetic in that she only cares about killing those deemed evil and seeking death when defeated instead of accepting mercy from the enemy. Unlike Vaggie, who found love and purpose instead of blindly following orders, Lute has no real life outside her job.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Flight: Like Adam, Lute is able to fly with their angelic wings. Unlike Adam, however, who's wings are larger and yellow, Lute's wings are just like a regular exorcist's wings. This does not seem to hinder their speed though, as they seem to be able to fly just as fast as Adam.
  • Spearmanship: Lute is the currently most skilled and dangerous exterminator who is personally responsible for killing thousands of sinners, even in the one time they fought back where she was able to kill the hellborn dragon demon Dazzle. So much that even though Vaggie was able to fight back against her once she gained her motivation to fight for love, Lute still held the upper hand and her opponent required to pin one of her arms to gain an advantage which didn't last long once Lute broke free as even one arm being missing didn't deter her and such a handicap simply led to an stalemate rather than a victory.
  • Superhuman Toughness: While clearly not indestructible, Lute has incredible tolerance for pain, so much that she is still able to fight (albeit not as well) and concentrate enough to talk even after losing an arm to the point of fighting Vaggie to a standstill.
  • Leadership: To be added...

Biography[]

Pilot[]

In “That’s Entertainment”, Lute is first shown along with a figure presumed to be Adam and Lucifer as Charlie talks to them with them either ignoring or refusing her pleas while Lucifer tells her to leave.

Lute is later shown amongst the other Exorcists being the one standing in the center as all of them tower over the corpses of the Sinners they killed, she is no longer seen afterwards. Somewhere during the Purge, Lute gouged out Vaggie's eye when she was an Exorcist, all over sparing a demon child and calling her "filth" who doesn't deserve a place in heaven as she rips her wings off. After she and Adam left her for dead, she was helped out by Charlie at that time and eventually became a couple, something she and Adam grew aware of.

Season 1[]

She appeared in "Overture", where she was mostly seen standing beside Adam and usually nodding every time he spoke to her, especially when he was messing with Charlie. Lute starts to speak when Adam answers how many Sinners she's killed, which she proudly replies that she has killed 275 of them in the last purge alone, much to her leader's impressed reaction. She then retorts to Charlie's humanization of Hell's Sinners, scoffing at the fact they "earned damnation" upon having their chance. It escalates to an argument where she firmly insists "angels don't make mistakes" to Charlie's argument of people making mistakes. She taunts the fact that the only reason the demons are spared is due to Lucifer giving them a pardon.

She then joins Adam's course in "Hell is Forever", taunting Charlie that there'll be another annual purge in six months. She and Adam are seen discussing the death of an Exorcist Angel, frustrated with the fact that there was never a demon in Hell who managed to kill one of the Exorcists, and suggests immediately going down to exterminate all Sinners and Demons alike. Though Adam insists on waiting patiently while not taking the risk of any demon coming at them but is reassured that there'll be no demon left alive to "pull a stunt like this again".

In "Welcome to Heaven", she is first seen without his Exorcist mask and reveals her face at that time. She is seen accompanying Adam before noticing Charlie and Vaggie's presence, which she stops Adam from going after them, retorting the reckless idea of starting a fight in the middle of the open and later reminds him to keep quiet about the Extermination but themselves since it is the first rule for Exorcists by Sera. She and Adam are later confronted by the head angel for speaking about the Extermination and orders them to handle the problem before it worsens.

She and Adam then confront Vaggie in the hotel, reminding her of her past and how she met Charlie, Lute rebukes Charlie's love for her as "vile and blasphemous" and later leaves with Adam after he threatens to reveal Vaggie's true heritage as an Exorcist angel should she comply with shutting down the Hazbin Hotel. Seen in court by Adam's side, Lute would argue along with the latter that a sinner like Angel Dust already wasted his chance and declared the discussion as "senseless and petty". When Adam unintentionally exposes the Extermination in the court with Emily turning back against Sera for her lies, she and Adam later reveal that Vaggie is an Exorcist to Charlie, descending her to despair. Later when Sera dismisses the latter's case, Lute watches Adam send Charlie and Vaggie back to Hell.

In the season finale, "The Show Must Go On", she is first seen preparing the other exorcists for battle alongside her boss, going on a profane rant about how she wants them to kill Vaggie that even Adam finds somewhat unnerving. Both and their task force then descend into hell to start their extermination at the Hazbin Hotel, only for the exorcists to be attacked with angelic weapons by the hotel patrons and blocked from entering the Hotel by a shield projected by Alastor. Lute points the shield out to Adam which causes him to frustratedly remark that he can see the shield too.

When Charlie and Vaggie try to attack Adam riding Razzle and Dazzle, Lute sweeps down and kills Vaggie's mount before engaging her in combat while promising to take her other eye before she kills her. During the fight, her superior strength and speed allow her to keep the upper hand, slamming Vaggie's head into the ground and throwing her around while Vaggie can only barely block or dodge her sword. She then proceeds to knock Vaggie's spear out of her hands and impales her hand with it before sadistically mocking her by saying that she at least won't be around to see Charlie die. However, Vaggie ripped the spear out of the wound and uses it to damage the hotel façade above her, burying Lute's arm in the process. Lute coldly demands Vaggie to kill her, but Vaggie refuses, wanting to rather have her live with the knowledge of only surviving due to her mercy, but also rightfully insulting Lute, calling her a failure which she always was, much to Lute's anger.

After Vaggie flies off, Lute desperately tears off her arm to free herself, much to her agony and pain. When Vaggie tries to assist Charlie against Adam, she tackles her from the side and continues their fight. She witnesses Adam's death at the hands of Nifty and shouts his name while running towards him full of shock and grief. She then proceeds to hold him in his final breaths as he smiles at her one last time. She takes his halo and takes his place as the leader of the exorcists, ordering them to retreat after Lucifer demands it from her.

She is last seen confronting Lilith, who is revealed to have been in heaven for the past seven years, and tells her that Adam is dead, and their deal is over while demanding she do something about the hotel and her daughter Charlie.

As Lute now plans revenge against Charlie, her dad Lucifer, Vaggie and their friends, to make them suffer for what they did to Adam.

Trivia[]

  • During the Hazbin Hotel pilot, one of the Exorcists shown during the introduction song bears a facial expression matching that of Lute's.
    • Furthermore, during the opening scenes of the pilot, a horned silhouette resembling an Exorcist is standing beside someone reminiscent of Adam. Given that the two were pictured together in a teaser, it is possible the silhouette may also be Lute.
  • She’s named after the instrument of the same name that various depictions of Angels usually play. However, Lute's name could also have a double meaning as a shortened version of "Lieutenant", considering that's her role in Adam's exorcist army.
  • Lute considers Vaggie and Charlie's love to be "vile and blasphemous" only because Charlie is a hellborn being and Vaggie is angel. Lute even calls Charlie "[Vaggie's] demon bitch". However, it could also be born partly out of homophobia, especially since Lute later betrays some prejudice when she mocks Angel Dust's profession as a gay sex worker in "You didn't know". Though this comment has also been interpreted as Lute despising Angel's promiscuity as she emphasizes the plural word "cocks" when describing his profession.
  • Lute is in denial about angels being fallible, since Lucifer is an angel, albeit fallen, and he regrets inadvertently bringing evil into existence. Also, Vaggie is ashamed of having taken part of the Exterminations. One doesn't feel regret unless they acknowledge a past action as a mistake.
  • Despite being an Angel, Lute has commited none of the seven heavenly virtues and she is guilty of committing five of the seven deadly sins:
    • Pride: Lute arrogantly claims that Angels, including herself, never make mistakes, despite being aware of Lucifer’s mistake of bringing sin and evil to Earth.
    • Wrath: Lute openly hates sinners and demons and believes that they all deserve to be killed during exterminations. This is further shown when Lute maims Vaggie and leaves her to die in hell after she spares a sinner child.
    • Lust: Lute has a strong, sadistic desire to kill her enemies; even having graphic fantasies about how to maim them. She showed this by cutting out Vaggie's eye and tearing off her wings, rather than killing her; feeling it more amusing to let her be found and killed by sinners. Even Adam, her equally vile boss, found it disturbing about how Lute wanted to tear Vaggie's vagina out through her backside. During their fight, Lute even states she wants to fully blind Vaggie by cutting out her other eye; making all her attacks towards said eye.
    • Envy: she resents Vaggie for being one of Adams former top Girls in the exorcist army.
    • Gluttony: She has an insane bloodlust, this is best seen during Charlie's meeting were she is covered in slain sinners blood.
