Gettan is a major antagonist in the comedy, dark fantasy, light novel, manga, and anime series The Eminence in Shadow. He is the Midgar Kingdom' Dark Knights Academy's assistant principal and the adoptive father of Sherry Barnett. But in beneath his great status, he hides his other side as a member of the Cult of Diablos who formerly held the 12th Seat of the Knights of the Rounds. He conceived an terroristic attack over his own academy to retrieve the Eye of Avarice artifact in order to heal himself from his disease, all for the sole purpose of reclamining his former position in the cult, under the identity of Sir Gaunt.
He is voiced by Hōchū Ōtsuka in Japanese and David Matranga in English.
Appearance[]
Lutheran was an old-looking man in his early 50s with short white hair and mustache. He wore a half-rimmed black glasses. His outfit comprised of a long beige-colored scarf and a red-brown-colored sweather with white sleeves, a paler red-brown-colored pants, and pair of brown shoes.
Assuming the persona of "Sir Gaunt," Lutheran had a towering height and shrouded his visage behind a mask and envelops himself in obsidian cloaks throughout the story's novel and manga iterations. Conversely, in the anime, he is presented as a clad in an imposing suit of shadowy plate armor, complete with a crimson cape, effectively obscuring his voice tone.
Personality[]
On the surface, Lutheran presents himself as a friendly, kind-herated and calm man, especially showcasing a warm relationship with his adopted daughter, Sherry Barnett. He constantly supported her pursuits and encouraged her to engage with others. However, this was merely a mask concealing his true character, as Lutheran was in practive a ruthless, power-obsessed individual devoid of compassion. The true connection between him and Sherry is that he is the murderer of the her mother and made Sherry believe that her death was caused in another way. His act as a kind-loving father even repulsed Shadow, who found it "unpleasant." Despite his malevolent and egocentric tendencies, Lutheran did possess a degree of honor and respect for swordsmanship and those who practiced it. In his prime, he held the position of the 12th Seat Knight of Rounds but was demoted due to illness. This demotion fueled his obsession with reclaiming his past status. He was extremely manipulative, exploiting Sherry and her deceased mother for his own ambitions. In the presence of Shadow, he admitted that those who pursue the way of the sword cannot abandon it. This quest for power and recognition drove Lutheran to commit any act, no matter how heinous, to regain his lost glory, his general greedy nature.
