~ Wainfleet as a squad of new troops arrive at the human base on Pandora.
Colonel, stand down! Colonel, it's me! Corporal Wainfleet! (Quaritch: Lyle? That you?) Yes, sir. And Z-Dog. And Fike.
~ Wainfleet to Quaritch in Avatar: The Way of Water
Hey colonel, check it out. Four fingers. We got a half-breed.
~ Wainfleet points out to Quaritch that Kiri is of human descent.

Corporal Lyle Wainfleet is the secondary antagonist of James Cameron's Avatar franchise.

He is a human mercenary who works for the RDA in their objective to mine the precious unobtanium reserves located on Pandora and one of Colonel Quaritch's most loyal soldiers. He also serves as one of Trudy Chacon's door gunners on her Samson. Despite his involvement with the scientists of the RDA's Avatar Program, unlike Trudy, Wainfleet is not swayed to their cause and remains loyal to Quaritch when the latter orders an attack to forcibly evict the Omaticaya clan from their Hometree so that the RDA can mine the unobtanium reserves located underneath. He also later participates in the assault on the Tree of Souls, during which he is killed in action by a hammerhead titanothere.

Fourteen years later, Wainfleet is reborn as a Recombinant (Recom) and chosen as the lieutenant and second-in-command of the 1st Recom Squad, with Quaritch's Recom serving as his commanding officer. Upon arriving on Pandora, the two of them are instructed by General Frances Ardmore to hunt down and kill Jake Sully, the biggest threat to the RDA's plan to colonize Pandora for mankind's continued survival.

He is portrayed by Matt Gerald, who also played Zandar in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Ray Speltzer in Dexter, Liebo in xXx: State of The Union and White Power Dave in All Hail the King.

Biography[]

Wainfleet isn't a vocal member of the RDA's security force and likes to either let his weapons or his commanding officer, Colonel Quaritch, do the talking. He is a fierce and able soldier who seems to enjoy battle and showing off his skills with his AMP suit. As a mercenary, Wainfleet doesn't fight for a cause, but rather for the RDA's good pay and the sheer, brutal thrill of hunting.

Wainfleet appears for the first time at the beginning of the movie when a group of new RDA troopers arrive on Pandora, of whom he mockingly refers to as "fresh meant." Upon noticing Jake Sully, a former recon Marine, arrive in a wheelchair, Wainfleet notes that it's just wrong to send disabled soldiers to a world as hostile as Pandora.

Wainfleet was at first a security member in the Avatar-program, but was not an Avatardriver like most others in the team who was led by Dr. Grace Augustine. Later on a expedition led by Grace Augustine he participates as a door gunner on their helicopter. He stays behind with the pilot Trudy Chacon as Augustine says that one idiot (Jake Sully) with gun is enought when they land their helicopter in the jungle to start their work.

After the Na'vi from the forest clan Omaticaya destroyed several bulldozers and killed several human soldiers in revenge for the destruction of one of their most sacred places the Trees of Voices Lyle was sent with his team to investigate and report back to Quaritch and the RDA administrator Parker Selfridge. Wainfleet reported the of the attack which lead to the destruction of the Omaticaya's hometree. During the assault he was a door gunner on a Samson piloted by a friendly pilot named Trudy Chacon who unlike Wainfleet not wanted to participate in the destruction of the Hometree and returned them both to their base Hell's Gate. This shows Wainfleets true color. That he is just as heartless and respectless as his boss colonel Quaritch against the Na'vi and the wild life of Pandora.

When Quaritch mustered all available units for the attack on the Na'vi's most sacred place, the Tree of Souls, in order to destroy them and take full control of Pandora Wainfleet took point in the ground force with his AMP suit soldiers. They formed up a fiering line that held the line against the Na'vi for most of the battle. During the battle Wainfleet even succeeded to shot down the movies female protagonist Neytiri's flying mount Seze. However, when Pandora's local wildlife entered from out of nowhere into the battle, Wainfleet and his troops were overpowered and killed because the animal's frontal armors was to thick for their bullets. It seems Wainfleet was also killed as a hammerhead titanothere rammed his AMP suit and then crushed it under one of its large feets with the screaming Wainfleet still inside the suit.

Avatar 2: The Way of Water[]

14 years later, Wainfleet, Quaritch and the other fallen mercenaries were revived into the Recoms avatars to sent out of hunting down and kill Jake Sully.

During the Skirmish at the Three Brothers, Wainfleet and Prager encountered Neteyam and Lo'ak as they were rescuing Spider Socorro and they fired at them. The brothers managed to escape with Spider, but Wainfleet managed to get a shot off Neteyam which mortally wounds him, meaning Wainfleet managed to kill Jake Sully's oldest son, he also manages capture Kiri with Mountain Banshee.

He was later knocked out by Jake who throwed him over board from the ship down into the sea. Wainfleet survived this and was along with Quaritch the two only Recoms in the team to survive the end of the second movie.

Trivia[]

  • Wainfleet is the only known member in the Avatar Program who remained loyal to Quaritch.
  • Wainfleet was originally supposed to have died in a different way during the assault on the Tree of Souls. In a deleted scene, his AMP suit was attacked by a thanator being ridden by Neytiri while he was retreating. After destroying the suit, the thanator then pulled Wainfleet out and brutally mauled him to death.
