Biography[]
Lyman Earl Collier one day is contacted by Paul Shannon because he had a proposition of making cash from a coveted project that involves hydrogen in the University of Chicago. Lyman sends out Yusef Reed and Clancy Butler to head off to a laboratory and strangle Dr. Alistair Barkley by placing a plastic bag on his head before leaving his corpse behind and also kidnapping his fellow associate, Dr. Lu Chen. They then set up the machine to malfunction and press a trigger on a remote which wrecks the entire laboratory and eight city blocks nearby while a young worker on the project named Eddie Kasalivich barely manages to survive via getting onto his motorcycle and hiding in a ditch. Collier then sets up Eddie and his best friend/colleague Lily Sinclair by tricking some FBI agents into thinking they are Chinese immigrants, which leads to the police having arrest warrants for them and they decide to reside in Maggie's place, Maggie herself being a pal of Eddie.
Collier goes to a courtroom when Shannon is debating with the judge regarding the project before going back to his company C-Systems Research. When Shannon finds him, Collier expresses disgruntled frustration with Shannon for not capturing Eddie from the beginning and that if the plan fails, he hopes that he won't suffer consequences. Collier orders one of his goons to shoot a kindly Wisconsin officer dead and thus by proxy is hunting relentlessly for them. Shannon confronts him on this and Collier shrugs it off, with Shannon getting tired of “cleaning up” Collier’s messes. Collier reveals that he framed the crew because it was easy and Collier fully intends to eliminate them against Shannon’s orders after they complete the project.
Lily is eventually taken by Reed and Butler after a meeting between her, Eddie, and Shannon gone wrong and is brought to C-Systems. Collier reveals he and Shannon had been holding Chen as a hostage the entire time and forces them both to work on the hydrogen machine. Eddie infiltrates the facility while Collier threatens to dispose of Lily if the test doesn’t succeed. The next morning, Collier celebrates the success of the test but it turns out Eddie had made it work in the first place. Collier meets up with Shannon and they both face Eddie. Collier won’t let Eddie go so Eddie exposes the operations and sets the reactor to self-destruct.
Collier then notices Chen walking and fires a bullet to his chest, before grabbing Lily and threatening to shoot Lily next while warning Shannon that he should've stayed out of the way. Collier attempts to shoot but backs down when he’s told it’ll blow up the reactor and murder everyone inside. Collier then forces Shannon to have Eddie and Lily remain within the headquarters to be blown up. Collier then retrieves a case filled with the money and goes to a elevator with Shannon, and wonders if he's too old for his job. Shannon suddenly shoots Collier multiple times because he was tired of his callousness. A dying Collier is then sent back down to be burned alive by the flames of the reactor when it goes off. Shannon then manages to bypass the security so that Eddie and Lily make it out in time, thus putting a end to Collier’s plot for good.
Personality[]
Lyman is a vicious, callous, thug-like businessman with no qualms on resolving situations with violence. Lyman is also commented by his partner Paul on having “poor impulse control”. Lyman heavily despises Eddie for getting ahead of him and has absolutely zero remorse for his crimes, as shown when he nonchalantly disregards that him shooting a state trooper would put Eddie and Lily at risk of execution if they get caught instead of originally being simply sent to jail. Lyman barely tolerates Paul’s presence and was willing to off him for showing anger towards him making their plan more complicated and his needless cruelty as well.
