Ser Lyn Corbray is a supporting character in A Song of Ice and Fire.
He is a Valeman and knight from the noble House Corbray and is the wielder of Lady Forlorn, his family's ancestral Valyrian steel longsword. Ser Lyn is also the heir to his elder brother, Lord Lyonel Corbray of Heart's Home, House Corbray's keep.
Personality[]
Lyn Corbray, though handsome in appearance, is a vain, reckless, and hot-tempered man, even claimed to be dangerous by Nestor Royce. While he is known for not being interested in women, he is claimed by Petyr Baelish to have a liking for "boys".
Unlike many other knights in Westeros, Ser Lyn is known for being less courteous and this, combined with his bad temper, makes him not well-liked, as evident when he had a hostile exchange with Lady Anya Waynwood. In addition, he is known for his ego, as he would boast of his deed of having "duelled" Prince Lewyn Martell during Robert's Rebellion, which is actually all made up. In reality, he just finished Lewyn as the latter lay wounded. Lyn is known to have a tendency of murdering anyone who would mention/point the truth out.
Biography[]
During Robert's Rebellion, Lyn Corbray sided with House Targaryen, and during a battle at the gates of the port city of Gulltown, he won his knighthood. Having sided with the loyalists, Ser Lyn fought against his liege Lord Jon Arryn and Lord Mark Grafton; however, in the aftermath of the battle, Jon was victorious, and he successfully took Gulltown. He also pardoned Lyn, which made him switch sides. Later, in the climatic battle of the Trident, he took up Lady Forlorn while his father lay wounded, and Lyn distinguished himself by leading an assault/counter-charge on the Dornish forces, which consisted of 10,000 strong. This attack halted the Dornish, and Prince Lewyn Martell of the Kingsguard, who led the Dornish continent, was badly wounded. Amidst the confusion, Ser Lyn finished Lewyn off.
As he died from his wounds, Lord Corbray bequeathed his son to Lady Forlorn in honor of his achievements, while his eldest son, Lyonel, inherited their family's estate and titles. However, the latter became resentful over having been denied Lady Forlorn, which continued on until the present day.
A Game of Thrones[]
Ser Lyn Corbray served Lady Lysa Arryn as one of her suitors following the death of her husband, Lord Jon Arryn. Lyn was present as Tyrion Lannister was put on trial for his "attempted assassination" of Catelyn Stark's son Bran. When Tyrion demanded a trial by combat, Ser Lyn offered himself as champion of the Vale, only for Lysa to reject him. After Tyrion's champion Bronn prevailed against House Arryn's champion Ser Vardis Egen, Lyn escorted Bronn and Tyrion all the way down to the Bloody Gate before commanding them to never return to the Vale.
A Feast for Crows[]
While on their way to the Eyrie, the noble group of Lords Declarant to the Eyrie chose Lyn Corbray to escort them to the Eyrie, where they would parley with Lords Petyr Baelish and Robert Arryn, the latter being the young and sickly son of the now-dead Lysa Arryn, as she was pushed out of the Moon door by Marillion (the actual culprit is Baelish himself, who killed his wife). The reason behind the decision was due to Lyn's reputation as one of the fiercest knights in the Vale, having slain many men in battle, and for being a veteran of Robert's Rebellion, though Lyn is despised by Sweetrobin.
The political objective of the Lords Declarant is to remove Petyr from his position as Lord Protector of the Vale, and they received leave from Queen Regent Cersei Lannister (who wishes to have Petyr back on the small council) to solve the matter on their own, so long as the ruler of the Vale is loyal to the Iron Throne. The Lords Declarant all voted for Lord Yohn Royce to become the Lord Protector of the Vale and to foster Lord Robert at Runestone.
At the Eyrie, Ser Lyn got into a hostile exchange with Lady Anya Waynwood, as a result of his disrespectful behavior and his lack of courtesy. During the parley, Lord Yohn's cousin, Lord Nestor Royce, claimed that Lyn never left Lysa's side for half a year. When Lyn grew tired of the ongoing (but souring) conversation during the parley, he unsheathed Lady Forlorn and threatened Petyr Baelish, challenging him to a duel to settle the matters, goading him to use his own dagger or ask freerider Ser Lothor Brune to give him his sword. When Lothor goes to unsheathe his own sword in order to intercept Lyn Corbray, he was stopped by the Lords Declarant, which convinced Lyn to put up Lady Forlorn. As the latter had unsheathed his own sword, this had earned him the ire of the Lords Declarant, as he had just violated the laws of Hospitality.
Yohn Royce, who is especially outraged with Lyn for his rash act, angrily demands him if he is a Corbray or a Frey (as because House Frey had earlier violated Guest Right during the Red Wedding, the name Frey has become a common synonym for dishonor and treachery). After Yohn commands him to leave the parley immediately, the other lords added their anger to Yohn's, but Lyn insists that he is thirsty for Littlefinger's blood, causing Lord Yohn to put himself in Lyn's path. Filled with disdain, Lyn mocks the Lords Declarant for being weak women before leaving. Unbeknownst to the Lords Declarant, Ser Lyn is secretly in Littlefinger's employ as his secret agent and that the embarrassing incident was all staged.
As a result of Lyn Corbray's actions, this drove Petyr's rivals to listen to his proposal, as well as his promises to grant new titles to them and to annul debts with House Arryn. All the Lords Declarant, except Yohn, finally agree to let Lord Baelish maintain temporary custody of Robert Arryn before giving him a year of trial to rule the Vale without opposition, so he could prove his worth and to see if he can finally take action against the ongoing raids by the now stronger Vale Mountain Clans (Lysa had used them to block the high road and keep any outsiders away from the Eyrie). Thus, thanks to the scene caused by Lyn, Littlefinger is officially accepted as the Lord Protector of Eyrie and the Vale of Arryn. This infuriates Yohn Royce, who realizes Petyr's games and manipulations and he warns him that "not all of us are idiots," looking at his fellow lords with contempt, and making it clear that he knows Lyn had put up a show for Petyr. Yohn immediately storms out of the Eyrie in anger without stopping to sleep there.
Later, Littlefinger tells Sansa Stark, who is under the guise of Alayne Stone, that Lyn is in his employ and is spying on the Lords of the Vale for him so he could be payed with gold and boys.
The Winds of Winter[]
At the Gates of the Moon, the winter castle of House Arryn (now granted to the Royces by Petyr), Lyn knocks down Ser Owen, a knight of the Vale, during a practice match prior to the tourney for the Brotherhood of Winged Knights, a new knightly order that will act and serve as the personal bodyguards of Robert Arryn. Lord Nestor Royce's daughter, Myranda, jokingly states that Ser Lyn would not be interested in her as she is a girl.
