Lyov Lysowsky is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds "Honor Among Thieves". He is a Russian mobster who kidnaps and ransoms Russian immigrants to the U.S.
He was portrayed by the late Dimitri Diatchenko, who also played Sandman in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.
Biography[]
Early life[]
The son of Russian mob boss Anseny Lysowsky, Lyov was raised by his mother after his father refused to acknowledge him because of a Russian mafia tradition that forbids its leaders to have families,
As an adult, Lysowksy followed in his father's footsteps as a gangster, making a living by trafficking Russian immigrants to the U.S., ransoming them for all their families' money. He is aided by his girlfriend Natalya Chernus, the daughter of one of Anseny's associates, and his partner-in-crime Fyodor.
Eventually, he started kidnapping relatives of Anseny's criminal syndicate, both for the money and to finally win acknowledgement and respect from the father who had ignored him for so long. He kidnaps Natalya's father and brutally tortures him, to the point that Fyodor has to step in to keep him from killing the old man.
"Honor Among Thieves"[]
After learning that the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) is investigating his kidnappings, Lysowsky flies into a rage and cuts the elder Chernus' ear off, sending it via courier to the Chernus family's house with a note raising the ransom from $100,000 to $500,000.
Under the BAU's advice, the Chernus family pays the ransom. Upon receiving the money, however, Lysowsky betrays Fyodor and kills him by stabbing him in the chest. He then tells Natalya that they have to kill her father, reasoning that they cannot leave behind a witness to Fyodor's murder. Natalya reluctantly agrees, bids goodbye to her father, and runs out of the room as Lysowksy prepares to mutilate and kill him with a knife.
At that moment, however, Chernus' cronies burst in, having been sent by Anseny to rescue Chernus and kill Lyov. They order Lysowsky to drop the knife, but he defiantly charges at Chernus, provoking the gangsters to shoot him dead.
Trivia[]
- Lysowsky is inspired by multiple real-life criminals:
- Jurijus Kadamovas and Iouri Mikhel, a duo of Soviet serial killers and kidnappers for ransom.
- Johnny "Apple" Porter, the uncle of Harlem drug dealer Rich Porter and the kidnapper and murderer of Rich's brother William. Johnny sent William's finger in the mail as incentive for a massive ransom, before leaving William's dismembered remains in trash bags. Rich would later be shot dead.
