Lyris was the leader of the Taresians. Her race were, according to her, 90% female, lacking males for breeding. The problem was exacerbated by the fact that the mating process, either naturally or through an artificial extraction of cells, left the males as lifeless husks. To alleviate this, the Taresians sought out males of other species and altered their DNA, causing them to mutate into Taresians and giving them genetic memories that would cause them to return to their planet.
When USS Voyager approached the homeworld, threatened by the Nasari who were blockading the world to prevent those infected from landing there, Lyris personally led a ship that came to their rescue and drove the Nasari away. She then contacted Voyager and spoke to Ensign Harry Kim, one of those altered, claiming he was a Taresian. Kim travelled to the surface with Captain Janeway, Lieutenant Tuvok and Lieutenant Paris. Lyris claimed that Kim had been conceived on their planet and then taken as an embryo to Earth, where he was implanted in his human mother without her knowledge. She claimed that this was their usual way of conceiving and that the child would take on characteristics of the surrogate parents until compelled to return home, bringing knowledge of other cultures and genetic differences.
Kim agreed to stay on the surface while Voyager went to negotiate with the Nasari. Lyris arranged for the planetary defence grid to be set up to prevent Voyager from returning but kept this from Kim, saying Voyager simply hadn't returned yet. She observed the bonding ceremony of another recently arrived male, Taymon, to his chosen mates.
Kim eventually realised the truth and also discovered what was in store for him when he found Taymon dead. Lyris led a group of Taresians in attacking him, with Lyris angrily saying it could have been a joyous occasion but he had nowhere to go. At that moment, Kim was beamed aboard Voyager, which had managed to sneak through the defence grid and escaped from the planet as the Taresians battled the Nasari again.
