The story of Lysandre from the Pokémon series.
In the Video Games[]
Pokémon X/Pokémon Y[]
Lysandre was first introduced as a wealthy philantropist in the Kalos region and an acquaintance of professor Professor Sycamore. Lysandre met Sycamore's new students at the Lumiose Lab, where she showed interest in them, but mainly Calem and Serena.
Lysandre occasionally interacted with Calem/Senera, sharing his ideal to create a beautiful world, as he had become disillusioned with mankind selfish nature and feared that overpopulation would cause disaster if unchecked. He also shared the story of the King of Kalos, who attempted to destroy Kalos via the use of a secret weapon as vengeance for humankind's horrific acts during a huge war, and revealed that he was a distant descendant of the king's younger brother.
Eventually Lysandre revealed that he's the leader of the criminal organization Team Flare, and he had rediscovered the Ultimate Weapon that the king used to destroy Kalos 3,000 years in the past. Lysandre believed that the only way to create the beautiful world he dreamed of was to drastically reduce the world's population and eliminate selfish greedy people destroying the ecosystem; for that he would use the Ultimate Weapon to wipe out the entire population of Kalos except for Team Flare. Lysandre discovered that AZ, the former King of Kalos, was still alive and held him prisoner, and stole the key to the Ultimate Weapon.
Sycamore's students raided Team Flare's hideout behind Geosenge Town where the Ultimate Weapon was unearthed and urged Lysandre to stop his reckless actions. Lysandre expressed remorse that his plan would drive Pokémon extinct, but remained firm that the number of Pokémon and people on the planet had reached an unsustainable level, and that if Pokémon and "corrupt" people continued to exist in the world, it would lead to even more suffering.
Calem/Serena reached the core of the Ultimate Weapon where the corpse of the Legendary Pokémon Xerneas/Yvetal was being used to power the device. Xerneas/Yvetal abruptly revived prematurely and were captured by Calem/Serena, draining most of the ultimate weapon's energy in the process. Enraged, Lysandre remerged ready to capture the Legendary Pokémon again with a special device.
Lysandre in the last battle.
In battle, Lysandre was confirmed to have access to a Mega Ring, like the player. When defeated for the final time, a desperate Lysandre claimed that even without the Legendary Pokémon there was still some power left in the Ultimate Weapon, and he proceeded to fire it.
Fortunately, with the weapon not being fully charged the impact of the blast only destroyed Geosenge Town and the weapon itself, and everyone had evacuated the town just in time, except for Lysandre who chose to stay behind refusing to admit defeat.
With the ultimate weapon seemingly destroyed for good and Lysandre's presumed death, AZ appeared and thanked Sycamore's students for stopping Lysandre's madness, but also regretted that Lysandre nearly comitted the same mistake he did 3,000 years prior. Some time later Sycamore also expressed partial blame for Lysandre's descent into madness, and felt he could've changed Lysandre's mind had he knew about his plans eariler.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A[]
Unknown to everyone, Lysandre survived the destruction of the Ultimate Weapon when Zygarde rescued him; however much like AZ, Lysandre became aflicted with an extended lifespan, this caused him to experience rapid aging and his left eye was blinded, Lysandre also lost his memories as a side effect.
Lysandre awoke buried under the rubble of Geosenge Town in the aftermath of the Ultimate Weapon's destruction with no recollection of his identity or actions before being rescued by Zygarde. Despite having lost his memories, Lysandre subconciously felt an imense sense of guilt over his attempted genocide with the Ultimate Weapon, and feeling in-debt for Zygarde, he became the Legendary Pokémon's herald, traveling the world in search for the Zygarde cells for when the time of its intervention is required.
5 years later Lysandre, now going by the name "L", was guided by Zygarde to return to Lumiose City which was facing a crisis of wild Pokémon uncontrollably Mega Evolving without a trainer, causing them to go berserk and suffering immense pain. Zygarde became interested in Team MZ, a group of children recruited by AZ to tackle the Rogue Mega Evolution problem in the city. L would frequently approach Team MZ, in particular Paxton/Harmony, urging them to listen to Zygarde's pleas and also its warnings that Lumiose City was in danger. During his time in Lumiose City, L would quickly be identified by multiple people who recognized him from his time as Lysandre and drew suspicions of his actions due to his past crimes, L would also slowly gather pieces of his old memories from visiting familiar locations.
L recovered a crucial memory of his time as Team Flare's leader; when he had AZ prisoner, Lysandre learned that AZ built a second device named "Ange" which was meant to operate as the antithesis of the Ultimate Weapon, meant to distribute Life Energy instead of stealing it, but Ange required the Eternal Flower Floette to operate thus it was left forgotten and hidden in Prism Tower; when Lysandre fired the Ultimate Weapon 5 years ago Ange became activated and has been slowly charging up on Mega Power, however without Floette Ange is uncontrollably releasing Mega Power which is the cause of the Rouge Mega Evolution, and if allowed to go uncontrolled too long Ange will suffer a catastrophic meltdown and would release a mass amount of Mega Power all over Kalos.
When Paxton/Harmony was due to battle Grisham as part of the Z-A Royale, a contest secretly designed to find a trainer powerful enough to guide Eternal Flower Floette to Mega Evolve and attempt to shutdown Ange, they learned of Grisham's forming of Team Flare Noveau and their efforts to redeem Team Flare's reputation. L met Paxton/Harmony in the ruins of Lysandre Labs where he explained the situation with Ange and how Zygarde also views Ange as a threat to be stopped, and urged them to help Zygarde stop the crisis when the right time came.
Once Ange went critical, Team MZ and their allies went to try to stop Ange, Urbain/Taunie were chosen to take Eternal Flower Floette to Prism Tower. Floette attempted to absorb the Mega Power from Ange but the tower instead went berserk and captured Floette. At that time Paxton/Harmony reunited with Zygarde, who gathered the final of its cells to reach its 100% form. Under L's guidance, Zygarde and Paxton/Harmony battled Ange culminating in Zygarde Mega Evolving to destroy the rouge weapon saving the day.
A few days after Ange's destruction AZ finally died of natural causes. Shortly before AZ's passing away L had a conversation with him about how he too had been cursed to live for 3,000 years and the agony of how he inevitably is going to outlive anyone he meets. L assisted AZ's funeral and paid his respects to his distant ancestor.
As the repair works after Ange's rampage continued, L visited Hotel Z and informed Team MZ about how "The one who gives" and "The one who takes" were coming to Lumiose city in response to the Ange incident, referring to Xerneas and Yveltal respectively. Once the two Legendaries were dealt with before any more disasters could occur, L challenged Paxton/Harmony to a Battle. Following the Battle, Zygarde summoned Paxton/Harmony to the ruins of Prism Tower for a final showdown.
With Zygarde caught by Paxton/Harmony, L concluded that his role as Zygarde's herald was done and he was no longer needed in Lumiose City. Before leaving, he explained to Paxton/Harmony that he's decided to spend his upcoming 3,000 years of life following AZ's footsteps and will wander the world in search of a means to accomplish the dream of a beautiful world free of conflict he had when he was Lysandre, but this time he'll aim to achieve this goal not through violence but rather through the mutual understanding of humans and Pokémon.
Pokémon Ultra Sun/Pokémon Ultra Moon[]
An alternate version of Lysandre from a different dimension appeared in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, teaming up with Giovanni, Archie, Maxie, Cyrus, and Ghetsis to form Team Rainbow Rocket. This version of Lysandre, along with Giovanni, Archie, Maxie, Cyrus, and Ghetsis, has accomplished their goals of catching the Legendary Pokémon. This is shown when Lysandre can either own a Xerneas in Pokémon Ultra Sun or Yveltal in Pokémon Ultra Moon.
Lysandre was summoned from his world when a bright light consumed him just after he fired the ultimate weapon. There were devices with red and blue buttons in his office, he subjects the player to the same choice Xerosic offered, claiming that one button will activate the ultimate weapon and the other will open the path to Giovanni. However, no matter which button the player chooses, it will be the one that activates the weapon. Lysandre then tells the player that pushing the opposite button will prevent it from firing. However, in order to buy time for the weapon to fire, Lysandre battles the player. When he is defeated, he allows the player to press the other button, shutting down the ultimate weapon (if there even was one), as well as unlocking one of the two seals needed to reach Giovanni. Lysandre then wonders if things would have been different in his world if he had met a Trainer like the player. He then rejects that line of thought, resolving that he must bring about his beautiful world. Although this was shown, Colress presumably sent Lysandre back to his own world.
Pokémon Masters[]
In Pokémon Masters, Lysandre first appeared as an scoutable sync pair that was revealed on February 9th, 2021 for the Give and Take event. His first sync pair had a five-star rank, using a Yveltal who represents the Flying type. Lysandre would go on to receive a Sygna Suit sync pair in coordination with the game's second story arc, which is a five-star rank Volcanion that represents the Water type.
During the Give and Take event, Lysandre is first seen watching a group of trainers speaking about Xerneas before heading off to find it. Here, Lysandre swears to take Xerneas for myself before it falls into what he deems to be the wrong hands, with Professor Scyamore hearing the news of his arrival and also planning to protect Xerneas from Lysandre's schemes. Searching the nearby forest, the player, Professor Scyamore, Calem, and Serena eventually find the Legendary Pokémon in all its splendor, but soon after they find it, Lysandre interrupts the heroes, detailing his plan to use Xerneas to make "a beautiful world", monologues on the nature of sync pairs and the cruelty of the world, and reveals a Honchkrow to battle them.
After the Honchkrow's battle and defeat, Lysandre notes the group of trainers' strength before unveiling his Yveltal to the heroes, planning to use its deathly powers to drain Pasio of life. While Yveltal easily defeats the protagonist's, Calem's and Serena's Pokémon, Lysandre continues on his distaste for the people of the world before quickly defeating Professor Scyamore's Bulbasaur and starting to begin Pasio's demise, alongside it's people and Pokémon. However, Xerneas springs into the fray to stop the misanthropic leader's plans, reversing Yveltal's effects before challenging Lysandre alongside the professor itself. While withstanding Professor Scyamore's words and Xerneas' attacks well, he also reveals his ace-in-the-hole, a button to a weapon that will eradicate Pasio and Xerneas, although this trick fails as Clemont, Volkner, Molayne, and Sophocles manages to switch off the device. Professor Scyamore further goes on to Lysandre on his dream to make a better world without destruction, but Lysandre merely notes of them having the power to do so, notes his undying desire to redeem the world through its demise, and walks off, with Professor Scyamore ready to challenge Lysandre if he ever again plans to attempt his schemes of genocide. After this, Professor Scyamore is given to the player for free, alongside his newly acquired Xerneas.
Lysandre also appears as the supporting characters of the Kalos-themed chapter of the game's second story arc. While not appearing himself within the first half of the chapter, Lysandre is mentioned as a major figure within Team Flare's internal squabbling, the group keeping weaponry on the island as a form of "insurance" for the man. Said weaponry has caused interest from both orderly and unruly members of the group, causing strife for the protagonists. Additionally, while Lysandre admires Volcanion for its sheer power, the main reason he captured it is for its docile nature, ensuring Scyamore that he will refrain from using it to harm others unless they feel it is needed. After being made further docile through the protagonists' requests, he sets off to deal with the troublemakers who infiltrates his group, not wanting to sully Pasio with their actions. Facing off against some grunts with Malva, Lysandre manages to effortlessly defeat his foes with his strength, later taking the remaining grunts with them to be punished.

Pokémon Adventures[]
Lysandre in Pokémon Adventures.
Lysandre makes his first appearance in Lumiose City, where he is visiting his friend Professor Sycamore's lab. The professor shows him a video of the battle between Xerneas and Yveltal that happened in Vaniville Town. Lysandre notes from the footage that Xerneas can give life while Yveltal takes it. He asks Sycamore to give him a copy of the footage for further study.
After arriving in Lumiose City and meeting Professor Sycamore, Trevor and his friends are sent to Lysandre to get Trevor's Holo Caster fixed. After noticing Lysandre's shadow in one of Viola's photographs of the incident in Vaniville Town, Trevor immediately suspects Lysandre to be the villain behind it and gets scared. When Lysandre takes notice of the picture, he demands that Trevor show it to him and threatens the group with his Pokémon. The kids are saved by Diantha, who gets Lysandre to back off with her Mega Gardevoir. The two converse on what they think beauty represents, which ends when Lysandre gets a call from Xerosic asking whether or not he should move Xerneas's tree form. After fixing the Holo Caster, Lysandre leaves to do other business. As he flies off to somewhere else, Lysandre tells his Gyarados that it will too be able to Mega Evolve one day.
Later, Lysandre returns to the Team Flare Secret HQ after Xerneas's tree form has been successfully transported. Xerosic presents Lysandre with the Lysandre Machine, which he forced a captive Clemont to build for them. Lysandre also receives a Mega Ring fitted with a Key Stone that Celosia stole from Korrina. He then activates the Lysandre Machine and prepares to use it to absorb Xerneas's energy and power the ultimate weapon. Later, Lysandre is interrupted by X, who had broken into the headquarters in order to put a stop to Team Flare's plan. Lysandre battles with X and uses his Key Stone to Mega Evolve his Gyarados.
Despite X having three Pokémon capable of Mega Evolving, he does not use it against Lysandre. Lysandre is surprised when his Mega Gyarados is attacked by X's Li'l Kanga, which Mega Evolved in secret by hiding in its mother's pouch. While he watches the two fight, Xerosic notices that the energy used to power the machine is being drained. X reveals that his Élec used its Lightning Rod to pull the electricity into its tail. Immediately afterward, Xerneas awakens from its slumber. Despite the appearance of the Legendary Pokémon, Lysandre is not fazed, as he noticed that Xerneas is in its blue Neutral Mode, which he states is nothing to get worried about.
X's friends and allies arrive at Geosenge Town, where they find the ultimate weapon in the process of being unearthed. The Gym Leaders and Y attempt to stop the ultimate weapon from being activated while Trevor, Tierno, and Shauna head inside the Team Flare Secret HQ to help X. As they make their way to the ultimate weapon's control room, Trevor and his friends meet AZ, the immortal former king of Kalos that Lysandre stole the ultimate weapon's activation key from. They befriend AZ and free him from his jail cell. When Trevor's group arrives at the control room, they find that X has already been defeated.
Upon seeing Lysandre's face, Trevor goes into a rage and fear-filled frenzy and goes to the platform where Lysandre is currently standing. Trevor yells at Lysandre to remove the key, only for Lysandre to suggest that Trevor do it himself. In response, Trevor has his Flabébé blast Lysandre off of the platform and immediately begins attempting to remove the key. Tierno and Shauna go up to assist Trevor, but the weapon is fired despite their success in removing the key. Despite this, the combined efforts of Trevor, his friends, and the Gym Leaders weakened the ultimate weapon to the point where no innocent lives are taken. As he has Xerneas take X and his friends back to the surface, AZ gloats over the heroes efforts to stop Lysandre's ambition just after being captured by Xerosic's Malamar.
Although Team Flare blamed the ultimate weapon's blast on X's friends and the Gym Leaders, their efforts did not fool every person in the region. To lay low from the public view, Team Flare relocated to the Pokémon Village. While there, Lysandre begins training with his Pokémon while taking shelter inside of a cave. After Xerosic discovers the stones lining Route 10 are also another form of the Absorber, Team Flare begins capturing the Pokémon inside the village and has them put on the stones in order to drain their life energy.
These actions gain Team Flare the anger of Mewtwo, the protector of the Pokémon Village. When X and Blue arrive at the village to stop Team Flare, they find Lysandre in battle with Mewtwo. Lysandre manipulates Mewtwo into battling X and Blue so that it may be weakened enough to be captured. Despite having battled together, Blue's attempt to get Mewtwo to recognize him ends in failure. During the battle, Mewtwo attacks X and Blue, but redirects the attack towards Lysandre to hit him instead. Mewtwo then proceeds to Mega Evolve into Mega Mewtwo Y. As Mewtwo battles Lysandre's Pokémon, Blue notices another person in the distance who was responsible for Mega Evolving Mewtwo.
Lysandre retaliates by activating a remote control device to summon Essentia and Zygarde from underground. Lysandre reveals that he had the limiters on Essentia's suit removed, allowing him to fully control her as if she were a puppet. By using a speaker system, Lysandre can speak into the device and have Essentia repeat his words so that he can command Zygarde to attack. The person who Mega Evolved Mewtwo, Blaine, reveals himself and proceeds to assist X and Blue. Lysandre retaliates by having Zygarde attack everyone with Land's Wrath, causing heavy damage. The damage dealt to Blaine forces Mewtwo to revert back to its normal state, but Blaine counters by using his connection with Mewtwo to have it Mega Evolve to Mega Mewtwo X.
While Zygarde battles against Mewtwo, X decides to sever Lysandre's control of Zygarde by attacking Essentia. Though successful in breaking her helmet, X is shocked to find that Essentia is actually Emma. Although Emma initially refuses to stop working for Lysandre so that she may pay Cassius for taking her in, X's words convince Emma that what she is doing is wrong. Despite this, Lysandre continues to use the controller to force Emma to control Zygarde. Cassius soon arrives and tells Emma that she doesn't need to work with Team Flare and has his Gourgeist destroy Lysandre's controller, breaking his connection to Zygarde. Now freed, Emma attempts to have Zygarde attack Lysandre, only for his Gyarados to attack her. Lysandre takes Zygarde's Poké Ball, thus making Zygarde his to command. Lysandre has Zygarde attack with another Land's Wrath, causing everyone to be sent flying. Y, seeing that Lysandre was distracted by the attack, decides to take the chance to have her Solsol bite Lysandre's hand. Lysandre has Pyroar attack Solsol, but is unable to prevent his Mega Ring from being taken away. Angered at the loss of the ability to use Mega Evolution, Lysandre has his Gyarados blast Y away with Hydro Pump.
Despite the loss of his Mega Ring, Lysandre proceeds to make a speech to the entire Kalos region and tells them about his plan to destroy everything with the ultimate weapon. Once Lysandre has finished, X returns with his entire team sent out. X reveals that he borrowed the Key Stones from his allies and uses all five to Mega Evolve five Pokémon at once. Though he is impressed by this feat, Lysandre is unfazed by X's attempt and sends Zygarde to battle X's Mega-Evolved team. The strain of controlling multiple Mega-Evolved Pokémon proves to be too much for X, causing him to be unable to focus on anything other than Zygarde. Lysandre attempts to exploit X's weakness by having his Pokémon attack, only for them to be defeated by Blue's Charizard and Mewtwo.
Lysandre and Malva's downfall in the manga.
As X's team continues their attack, X's friends notice that Zygarde's body has begun to break apart. Y's Xerxer reveals that this is due to it and Yveltal returning to their dormant tree and cocoon forms. After Xerxer and Yveltal fully revert, X has his team launch one final combined attack on Zygarde, which causes it to fully break apart. With Zygarde gone, Lysandre begins falling to the ground below him. As he falls, Malva attempts to help Lysandre, but both end up landing onto the sharp rubble below. As he lays in a pool of blood, Lysandre weakly asks the unconscious Malva why the ultimate weapon has not been fired yet. Blaine checks him and reveals that while he was still breathing, his spinal cord has suffered severe damage.
