Máttugr Helson is a major antagonist in the 2018 game God of War. He acts as the bridge keeper of Hel that Kratos must defeat in order to save his son.
Biography[]
Helson, as the name suggests, is the literal son of Hel. He was born in the depths of Helheim, and grew up there. It became his job to watch over the bridge of Helheim, a job he would successfully do for many years. As Odin had imprisoned the Valkyries, the job fell to Helson alone to make sure no one who wasn't supposed to got in or out of Hel.
He met his match, however, when Kratos entered Helheim searching for Helson's heart, as it was an ingredient the witch Freya needed to save Atreus, Kratos' son. After a long, tedious battle, Kratos was victorious, piercing Helson's eyes with his Blades of Chaos, killing the troll.
Kratos then used his Blades of Chaos like pliers to open Helson's chest and steal his heart. With Helson dead, and the Valkyries still imprisoned, the bridge of Hel started to fall to chaos. Odin likely created a temporary solution to this, most likely selecting more Valkyries to do Helson's job, in an effort to halt Ragnarök for as long as possible.
Appearance[]
Helson is a large golden troll with four horns, wearing garments similar to his skin colour, and large heavy boots.
