The M-5 is the main antagonist of the Star Trek episode "The Ultimate Computer".
It was voiced by the late James Doohan, who also voiced Kor, Koloth and Keniclius 5 in the animated series.
Biography[]
The M-5 was a computer created by Doctor Richard Daystrom, intended to take over the running of a starship so humans need not be risked in dangerous situations. Daystrom had impressed his own neural engrams on it to give it the ability to think. The Enterprise was assigned to test M-5, with the computer being tied in so it could operate all systems, flying the ship without human input. It provided recommendations for the exploration of a planet, omitting Kirk and McCoy since it considered them non-essential and choosing an ensign with experience of the region from his previous career over the department head. It also fought off a simulated attack by two Federation starships.
However, the M-5 began to behave in an increasingly erratic manner, possibly as a result of Daystrom's own mental instability. It began cutting off power to areas of the ship that it considered non-essential. Then, it launched an attack on an unmanned ore freighter, resisting any attempts to give it instructions or shut it down, destroying the freighter. It tapped into the Enterprise's main power and, either by accident or design, killed Ensign Harper, who was trying to disconnect it and was standing in the way of the power link. Spock and Scotty attempted to perform a manual override of helm and navigation, but M-5 thwarted them by redirecting the controls.
Four Federation ships arrived for an intended war game but, not understanding the situation, M-5 attacked them at full force, killing hundreds of Starfleet personnel including the entire crew of the USS Excalibur. The remaining ships withdrew, planning to launch a full attack that would destroy the Enterprise and the M-5 with it, although the Enterprise crew suspected the M-5 would simply kill them. Daystrom attempted to reason with the computer, telling it killing was wrong, but this merely caused Daystrom himself to suffer a breakdown and have to be removed.
Kirk took his place, forcing the M-5 to face up to the fact that it had committed murder. Accepting it deserved to die in return, M-5 shut down all power, intending for the Starfleet taskforce to destroy the Enterprise. M-5 was disconnected and the taskforce broke off their attack.
According to the short story "Concurrence", M-5 fell into the hands of the Romulans who attempted to use it against the Federation only for it to turn on them. According to the novel Immortal Coil, it was eventually acquired by the immortal human Finn.
