The story of M.K. from Into the Badlands.
Biography[]
Early life[]
M.K. was born in the Outlands, with no family other than his unnamed mother. As a teenager, M.K. showed that he was a Dark One, an individual who possessed the Gift, enabling him to use dark chi powers whenever his skin was cut. He and his mother began searching for a cure, and while they never found one, they were told of the mythical city of Azra, a place where people like M.K. could be safe. He happened to own a pendant which had a symbol of Azra on it, and despite the city being seen as a fairy tale, he and his mother believed it was out there somewhere. One day, the village that M.K. and his mother were in was attacked by Baron Quinn's Clippers, which were led by Sunny. Due to being a mindless killer, Sunny cut down M.K.'s mother right in front of him, but M.K. was able to get away. After this, M.K. blocked the event out of his memory, and forgot that the killer was Sunny. He began traveling on his own, and was eventually abducted and sold into slavery as a Cog. While he was being trafficked on one of the River King's boats, M.K.'s Gift was activated, causing him to slaughter everyone on board. This prompted the River King to put a bounty out on M.K.'s head. He was eventually captured by Quinn's Clippers and chained up with other Cogs, to be delivers to Quinn's compound.
Becoming a Colt[]
As Quinn's Clippers take M.K. and the rest of the Cogs to their compound, they are attacked and killed by a group of nomad scavengers led by a man named Tenko, who have been hired by the Widow, with only M.K. being spared. They put M.K. in a trunk and begin transporting him to the Widow's fort. Quinn then sends Sunny in order to find out why the Cog shipment has not arrived yet, who discovers the nomads, killing them and freeing M.K. from the trunk. Neither of them recognizes each other from the time long before when Sunny killed M.K.'s mother, and Sunny tells M.K. that he will take him back to Quinn's compound in order to become a Colt, a Clipper in training. Later that day, M.K. is brought before Quinn, who gives him and a group of other Colts a speech on what it means to serve him, before sending them to train in the pit. While in the pit, M.K. befriends another Colt named Bale, and the two agree to watch each other's backs. Another Colt named Ajax attempts to steal M.K.'s Azra pendant, and the two fight, only to be broken up by Sunny, who confiscates the pendant. Later that night, Ajax attacks M.K. out of anger and cuts his skin. This triggers M.K.'s Gift to activate, and he completely decimates Ajax in a fight, blinding him in one eye before collapsing unconscious. Sunny witnesses this and takes M.K. to his room, where he questions him on what happened after he woke up. M.K. explains that it happens when he bleeds, and he and his mother were searching for a cure. Sunny tells him that he has a compass with the same symbol on it, but that he cannot return M.K.'s pendant, as it was confiscated by Ryder, the son of Baron Quinn. Sunny warns M.K. to not go looking for the pendant.
Despite the warning, M.K. sneaks into the home of Baron Quinn and enters Ryder's room, where he finds the Azra pendant. Unfortunately, he is then caught by Ryder, who takes him prisoner with the plan to execute him in the morning for stealing from the family of the Baron. Sunny enters M.K.'s cell, where he chastises M.K. for not listening to him. M.K. then apologizes to Sunny, and begs him to find his mother and tell her that he tried to find her and that he loves her. Sunny then cuts M.K.'s chains and tells him to tell his mother himself, and leads him to a tunnel that will let him escape from Quinn's territory. M.K. uses it and escapes into the rest of the Badlands, with the goal of getting as far away from Quinn's territory as possible. While traveling, he is caught by a girl named Tilda, who introduces herself as the daughter of the Widow, a Baron who rivals Quinn. While he trusts her more than Quinn, he does not tell the Widow he has the Gift. The Widow instructs Tilda to train him on how to fight, and to cut his skin. Tilda almost goes through with it, but M.K. begs her not to, not wanting to activate his Gift and kill her. Feeling sympathy for him, Tilda lets him go without cutting him. That night, she tries to help him escape, but when the Widow catches them, Tilda kisses M.K. to make it seem like that's the reason they snuck out. The Widow then kicks M.K. out, and he is taken in by Hud, the leader of a group of nomads who the Widow had made an alliance with, who plans to turn him over to the River King and collect the bounty that was put on him.
The next day, Sunny and Ryder are lured to the nomad's compound, where they are ambushed. Sunny kills most of them, but the leader manages to survive. The leader almost kills Sunny, only for M.K. to stab and kill him. Sunny then tells M.K. to run once again, and M.K. says he needs Sunny's help, as he cannot survive in the Badlands without him. Sunny says that he can't go with him or Quinn will hunt them down, but that there may be another option. Sunny then offers to train M.K. to fight, so that way he will be able to protect himself outside in the Badlands, and hopes that if they train M.K. may one day be able to control his Gift. He also makes M.K. promise to take someone with him, a woman named Veil who is pregnant with Sunny's child, which M.K. agrees to do. Sunny takes M.K. back to Quinn's compound, where he requests to make M.K. his personal Colt, something he has never done before. Quinn agrees to forgive M.K. for his previous treason out of gratitude for saving Ryder's life. Quinn retaliates to the Widow's attack on Ryder, invading her mansion, during which the Colts are taken to be lookouts. M.K. steals a book on Azra during the invasion, and briefly runs into Tilda, but the two of them quickly part ways as Tilda has to flee from Quinn's forces. M.K. later gives the book to Sunny, and while he is initially angry at M.K. for having gone into the Widow's mansion when he was supposed to be a lookout, he says that he will try to find someone who can read and translate the book, which is in a different language.
Training under Sunny[]
M.K. and Sunny begin training together, but M.K. is uncooperative and dislikes Sunny's style of training. Sunny tells M.K. that if he wants to escape the Badlands, he needs to also take Veil, Sunny's wife, with him, because there is no way Sunny could ever take her. M.K. understands, but he still doesn't want Sunny to train him the way Colts are normally trained. To prove M.K. wrong, Sunny takes M.K. to see his former Regent, Waldo. M.K. is hesitant to fight Waldo due to Waldo no longer having legs, but when the two spar M.K. fails to even land a single hit on him. Waldo tells M.K. that he is only paying attention to what he sees right in front of him, and needs to never underestimate his opponent, or it will get him killed. M.K. is later present during one of Sunny's visits to Veil, where he learns she is able to read. He then brings her the book on Azra, hoping that she can translate the book. Unfortunately, she is not able to. Sunny urges M.K. to stay away from Veil until it is time for them to flee the Badlands. Sunny decides that in order to escape the Badlands, M.K. will need to learn how to control his power. While M.K.'s overall fighting ability improves, Sunny decides to try cutting him by surprise to activate his power, which leads to M.K. instantly overpowering and knocking Sunny out. M.K. angrily tells Sunny that he could have killed him, and Sunny admits he is right, asking M.K. what it feels like to have his powers active. M.K. describes it as inexplicable rage and darkness flowing through him, and Sunny tells him to focus on something he finds pure in order to turn it off when it activates.
Later, M.K. follows Sunny to a meeting with Baron Jacobee, proposing an alliance between him and Quinn against the Widow. However, the Widow ambushes them in an attempt to frame Jacobee for attacking Sunny, during which M.K. is cut and begins to fight everyone around him. Tilda is part of the attack, and when M.K. grabs her with the intent to kill her, he manages to turn his powers off due to finding her to be something pure in a world of death. He then lets her get away, and Sunny convinces Jacobee's forces that they should not be fighting one another, but in reality this entire conflict was a setup from the Widow. M.K. is later with Sunny on a mission to capture some of the Widow's forces, alongside his friend Bale. There, Tilda is captured and taken back to Quinn's prison. Sunny prepares to torture Tilda in order to extract information, only for them to be ambushed by the Widow, who escapes with Tilda. Sunny ultimately decides to let them go. Bale is killed in the process, and Sunny cuts off his head to take to the River King, who wanted M.K. dead for having ruined one of his shipments. Sunny lies and says Bale's head is M.K.'s, and in exchange the River King agrees to give Sunny and his loved ones safe passage out of the Badlands.
Unfortunately, during the fight with the Widow, M.K.'s powers had activated, and were seen by Quinn. Now that Quinn knows of M.K.'s powers, and of Sunny's decision to not pursue them, he locks Sunny up for treason, and makes M.K. his new Regent-in-training. He tells M.K. that if he is loyal to him, Quinn will spare Sunny and help M.K. to see Tilda whenever he wants. M.K. agrees to this, and Quinn takes M.K. to the marketplace with the intention of buying a Doll prostitute for M.K. to sleep with. Quinn is ambushed in the marketplace by Jacobee, Ryder, and Zypher, Jacobee's Regent. Quinn proceeds to intentionally cut M.K.'s shoulder to activate his powers, at which point M.K. kills Jacobee and Zypher, with only Ryder successfully getting away. Sunny, who has escaped from prison, ambushes and stabs Quinn, seemingly killing him. Sunny then tries to hold back M.K., saying that it must be possible to control his Gift, but M,K. throws him to the ground and prepares to kill him. They are interrupted when suddenly a group of three Abbots appear, having tracked M.K. down. They incapacitate M.K. and fight Sunny, but when it seems Sunny can take them, they activate the Gift, showing that M.K. is not the only one who has it. They completely decimate Sunny in combat, and take M.K. in a trunk to an unknown location outside of the Badlands. Sunny is then captured by the River King, who has learned of Sunny's deception.
The Abbot Monastery[]
M.K. is taken to a Monastery, where people with the Gift are trained to become Abbots in secret by a woman named the Master. He is being trained by a girl named Ava, who is shown to be highly skilled with the Gift. He does not wish to be there, and is hostile towards everyone, including the Master and Ava. He does befriend a boy named Tate, who was also taken forcibly by the Abbots. The two of them talk about their mutual plans to try and escape, but M.K. is more vocal of his wish to leave, putting him at odds with the Master. He soon learns that Ava was specially tasked with keeping an eye on him, rather than being a friend and mentor, and he angrily tells her he wants nothing to do with her. She is hurt since she felt they were becoming friends, and attempts to apologize, but M.K. stop training with her. The Master eventually calls M.K. into her chamber, where the two argue over her taking him by force. M.K. tells her he wants to leave, and she tells him he only can once he is capable of controlling his Gift. She then demonstrates her power to him by overpowering him with only the use of a paper crane. She then takes him to a room known as the mirror chamber, in which a person can access memories, even ones which are locked away in their mind. She then puts M.K. to sleep, where he faces a dark version of himself, representative of his uncontrollable rage from when his Gift is active. He is ultimately unable to overcome this dark version of himself, and he sees the memory of his mothers death, which suggests that he killed her. When he wakes up, he finds that he is no longer able to use his Gift. The Master tells him he will be able to use his Gift again once he comes to terms with his inner darkness.
Not too long after that, M.K. witnesses Tate get taken away by the Abbots to a secret chamber. It turns out that he had attempted to escape, and the Abbots respond by pressing needles into his body in order to remove his Gift, putting him into a coma. M.K. then decides he has to escape from the Monastery. He sneaks out the following night, and when he realizes that he is being followed, he prepares for a fight, only for it to be Ava, who wishes to run away with him. The two of them begin traveling through the countryside, with the goal of searching for Azra. Eventually the two of them reach an abandoned Christmas decoration store from the old world, but the three abbots who originally captured M.K. track the two of them there, with the intention of taking them back to the Monastery. While M.K. and Ava are hiding, they run into Sunny and his traveling companion Bajie, who had escaped from slavery after being sold into it by the River King. The group is then ambushed by the three Abbots, and fight to a standstill. Sunny tells M.K. that in order to win they need his Gift, but M.K. makes it clear his no longer works. Ava then activates hers, and in response so do the three Abbots. Ava is mortally wounded by one of them, but manages to kill them as well. Bajie then kills another one of the three by running them over with a car, and uses a pressure point technique to temporarily disable the final Abbots Gift, letting Sunny go in for the killing blow. M.K. comforts Ava as she dies, saying she is scared that the Master's teachings were wrong, and that she fears there is nothing after they die,
Sunny collapses after having finished off the final Abbot, with black marks on his chest. Bajie realizes that the Abbot used a technique called the Hand of the Five Poisons on Sunny, and it will kill him soon. M.K. asks if there is some way to save Sunny, and Bajie admits that the Master may have a cure, but would never give it to them. M.K. suggests that they sneak into the Abbot Monastery to find the cure and steal it, to which Bajie calls him crazy, but M.K. refuses to let Sunny die after having just losing Ava, and drives Sunny to the monastery. Bajie goes with him, and initially refuses to go into the monastery once they get there, but after M.K. reveals there is a compass that can lead to Azra inside, Bajie suddenly has a change of heart and agrees to go inside. They manage to find the cure, and Bajie snatches the compass, although he doesn't tell M.K. of this. They are confronted by the Master and her Abbots, but manage to escape by cutting the young Abbots, which causes their untrained Gift to activate and make them attack the senior Abbots and the Master. M.K. then uses the cure to wake up Sunny, saving his life. The three decide to return to the Badlands in order to save Veil and her newborn son, Henry, who are imprisoned by Quinn, who had managed to survive Sunny stabbing him. The three attempt to sneak onto a Cog shipment going into the Badlands for Baron Chau, but are caught and imprisoned. Sunny then becomes Chau's new regent in exchange for help in retrieving his family, with M.K. and Bajie being imprisoned.
Prisoner in the Badlands[]
M.K. and Bajie manage to free themselves, and later meetup at the Widow's compound. Sunny eventually betrays Chau to work with the Widow, believing that she will be the one who can help him save his lover Veil and his son Henry. M.K. and Bajie sneak into the Widow's compound to retrieve the book of Azra, which has since been returned to the Widow. Bajie is capable of reading the book, and hopes to translate it in order to find Azra. The two of them are caught in the act and imprisoned once again. The Widow tells M.K. that Bajie once trained her, but only really cared about finding the book and compass on Azra, but didn't care about her at all. Bajie denies this, but M.K. realizes that Bajie only agreed to go into the monastery to save Sunny after he told him about the compass, seemingly severing their friendship. It is later revealed by a suicide bomber named Gabriel that Veil had actually managed to escape from Quinn, but was sold back to him by the Widow, who wanted to work with Quinn. This revelation causes Sunny to turn on the Widow. Tilda has also been imprisoned for betraying the Widow, and but she is broken out of prison by her girlfriend Odessa, who also breaks Bajie, but M.K. is ultimately left behind.
M.K. is then a prisoner of the Widow for several months, with her wanting to use his Gift as a weapon against Baron Chau. However, she is unable to reactivate his Gift after it was sealed off by the Master. M.K. spends most of his time abusing opium and sleeping with Butterfly Clippers, refusing to cooperate with the Widow and only requesting to see Tilda. Unknown to him, Tilda had since betrayed the Widow and become a rogue known as the "Iron Rabbit" who works to help refugees in the war between the Widow and Baron Chau. M.K. later breaks out of his cell after having his opium taken, and attacks the Widow, only to be confronted by her new Regent, Nathaniel Moon. M.K. accuses the Widow of being desperate due to Nathaniel missing a hand and needing a metal prosthetic, however Nathaniel was once the most feared Clipper in the Badlands prior to Sunny, who was actually the person who cut off Nathaniel's hand in the first place. The two spar, and M.K. is clearly outmatched, but Nathaniel is impressed by M.K.'s fighting ability. He asks M.K. who trained him, and he reveals that he was trained by Sunny, the best Clipper in the Badlands. M.K. taunts Nathaniel over having lost his hand to Sunny, prompting him to knock M.K. out in anger. After this, the Widow doesn't let him have opium anymore.
M.K. convinces one of the Butterfly girls he has been sleeping with to give him heroin, which he immediately injects into himself in a suicide attempt. During this overdose, he is confronted by his Dark One self, who angrily chastises him for trying to kill himself. M.K. says he has nothing left to live for, but his dark self claims that it does, and has been trapped inside M.K. due to him believing that he killed their mother. M.K. says that he say that he knows he was the one who killed their mother, as he saw a vision of it while in the mirror chamber, but his dark self says the Master was tricking him, and that their mother was murdered, but not by him. It is at this moment that he finally remembers that it was Sunny who killed his mother. When he wakes from his overdose, he finds that the Widow has restrained him to keep him from trying to kill himself again. When the Widow's servants force-feed him, he finds that he cannot breathe, and this, combined with the anger over his mother's death, finally reactivates his Gift. He immediately breaks out of his room and completely decimates the Widow in combat. Tilda, who was meeting with the Widow at the same time, begs M.K. not to kill the Widow, and the two leave together.
Joining Pilgrim[]
Tilda tries to convince M.K. to stay with her, but he is adamant in killing Sunny, and departs into the wasteland to find him. During his travel, his is found by Nix, a fellow Dark One who follows Pilgrim, a survivor from the lost city of Azra with the power to turn off the Gift in others at will. She takes him to Pilgrim's island, a place that supposedly contains the ruins of Azra. Upon reaching them, the witch Cressida, a follower of Pilgrim who has the power of blood magic, is shocked to see that M.K. is capable of using his Gift without having to cut his skin. M.K. asks Pilgrim if he is a prisoner, and Pilgrim assures him that he is free to leave if he wishes, but that the world which Pilgrim wishes to build is one where Dark Ones will be safe. Because of this, M.K. ultimately decides to stay with Pilgrim and fight for his cause. M.K.'s presence angers Castor, another Dark One who follows Pilgrim that believes M.K. is his replacement due to his Gift killing him, by comparison to M.K. who has full control over his Gift and can use it whenever without cutting himself. Ultimately Castor's fits of rage and lashing out leads to Pilgrim secretly killing him to prevent him from causing doubt among Pilgrim's followers. M.K. begins to bond with Nix, saying that he isn't trying to replace Castor, but that he can help her to harness her Gift without cutting, instructing her to focus on something more painful than any cut ever could be.
M.K. follows Pilgrim for a few weeks, before one day Sunny and Bajie turn up to ruins, searching a cure for the Gift, which Henry has developed. Sunny believes that Pilgrim is the only one who can cure Henry, but M.K. still wants revenge, and attacks Sunny. He nearly kills him, but Pilgrim steps in at the last minute and stops him. Sunny later visits M.K., believing that he is angry due to Sunny not saving him from the Widow, only for M.K. to angrily berate Sunny for not even remembering that he killed M.K.'s mother. Sunny attempts to apologize, but M.K. refuses to hear him out. Sunny asks M.K. if Pilgrim can be trusted, for the sake of Henry, and M.K. tells him that everything Pilgrim says comes true, good and bad. Later, the ruins of the Meridian Chamber are found, which are the origin of the Gift. Sunny and Pilgrim use it to cure Henry of the Gift, which in turn transfers the Gift from Henry to Pilgrim. Sunny eventually decides that the Meridian Chamber must be destroyed after seeing Pilgrim give the Gift to a group of his followers, but M.K. catches him doing it, and brings him before Pilgrim. Sunny and Pilgrim then face each other in battle, with Sunny being overpowered by Pilgrims new Gift. Sunny is thrown into a lake and presumed dead. Later, Pilgrim thanks M.K. for stopping Sunny and promotes his position within their group. Nix questions M.K.'s decision, as she is beginning to feel doubts about Pilgrim after Castors suspicious death. M.K. teaches Nix how to use her Gift without cutting.
It eventually becomes clear that Sunny is alive after a group of scouts sent to find his body yields no results, and when one of their scouts does not come back, Pilgrim realizes that they must have been killed by Sunny upon finding him. Pilgrim nearly kills one of the scouts in anger, but is stopped by Nix, and quickly apologizes for losing control of himself. Pilgrim then sends M.K. and Nix alongside the newly created group of Dark Ones to find and kill Sunny. They eventually discover Sunny hiding in an abandoned clothing store, where Nix decides to turn against Pilgrim due to her correct belief that Pilgrim murdered Castor. M.K. still tries to kill Sunny, but Nix stops him and the two engage in combat. M.K. nearly kills Nix, but is stopped by Sunny who stabs him in the back with a metal rod, then bending it sideways to temporarily turn off his Gift and trap M.K. in place. M.K. says that Sunny might as well just kill him, but Sunny can't bring himself to do it, and he leaves with Nix. M.K. eventually manages to turn his Gift back on and break the rod in order to escape, and returns to Pilgrim to tell him the news of Nix's betrayal. As M.K. recovers from his injury, Pilgrim questions whether he can trust M.K., as he worries that he may betray him just as Nix did. M.K. then says he knows a way to prove his loyalty, by providing Pilgrim with an army of loyal Dark Ones while the Meridian Chamber is being repaired.
War for the Badlands[]
M.K. tells Pilgrim and Cressida of the Abbot Monastery, saying that there are hundreds of people that the Master had forcefully put to sleep when they tried to escape, like his friend Tate. M.K. says he was afraid to ever go back due to the Master's power, but now that Pilgrim has the Gift, they will have a chance to defeat her. M.K. assures Pilgrim that if they wake the sleeping Dark Ones, they will serve Pilgrim in his mission to take the Badlands and turn it into a sanctuary for those with the Gift. Pilgrim then takes a small group of followers who he had granted the Gift via the Meridian Chamber, and they set out to take over the Monastery. M.K. and Pilgrim storm the Monastery, defeating the Abbots and eventually confronting the Master. Pilgrim's ability to turn off the Gift allows him to overpower and defeat the Master, freeing the Abbots from her control. M.K. then taunts the Master over the fact that she had taken his Gift in the past, but he manages to unlock it once again, and that now he would wake all of the Abbots she put to sleep. The Master tells M.K. she had to take his Gift, or she feared he would destroy them all. Pilgrim eventually finds a scroll with the procedure to wake up the sleeping Dark Ones, and he and M.K. awaken them, creating an army. Pilgrim gives a speech to the existing novices who actively served the Master, telling them of her deception, which successfully sways them to his side.
M.K. befriends an awoken novice named Eli, who tells him of how being in a coma felt like being in an endless nightmare where he could feel the needles drilling into his skin without any way to ever escape. M.K. tells Eli that if he follows Pilgrim he can fight for a better world, and Eli says to tell Pilgrim whatever he needs, Eli will do it. Pilgrim begins taunting the Master of her failure, but she attacks him by surprise, nearly killing him. But before she can kill him, M.K. stabs her in the back, fatally wounding her. Pilgrim then tells M.K. that he will now stand by his side as his most trusted warrior, and one true son. The two of them return to the ruins of the Meridian Chamber, preparing to take the world over and rebuild Azra. Pilgrim receives word that the Widow has killed Baron Chau, meaning the Widow is the most powerful Baron left, making her his first target in the Badlands. Pilgrim and his followers then lead a massive attack on the Widow's compound, but are attacked with explosives at the gate, which massively burn M.K.'s face. When M.K. awakens, he is horrified at his injuries, and begins abusing opium once again. Pilgrim assures M.K. that he is now his most trusted warrior, and that he should be proud of what he has become. Pilgrim then has M.K. instruct the followers on how to use their Gift without cutting themselves, making them more powerful than ever before. Sunny, the Widow, Bajie, Tilda, Nathaniel Moon, Gaius Chau (the brother of Baron Chau), and several other allies decide to launch an attack on Pilgrim, who tasks M.K. on protecting the Meridian Chamber and keeping it from being destroyed.
The Widow, Gaius, and Tilda sneak into the chamber and rig it full of explosives, but M.K. arrives to stop them. Tilda says she will blow up the chamber with them all inside, as they are willing to die for their cause, but M.K. reveals that the Widow is pregnant, being told this information by Cressida, who could sense the pregnancy using her blood magic. This prompts Tilda to put down the detonator, at which point M.K. tells the Widow that he knows she always wanted her Gift back, and that Pilgrim can give it to her. She refuses, saying that she's seen what the Gift has done to Pilgrim and M.K., and now wants nothing to do with it. The three engage M.K. in combat, and despite how powerful the three are, they are no match for M.K.'s Gift, and are overpowered. M.K. disarms Tilda, but cannot bring himself to kill her due to his love for her in the past, and continues fighting Gaius and the Widow. He knocks down the Widow and is about to go in for the killing blow, only for Tilda to jump in front of the Widow and save her, being stabbed in the process. M.K. drops his swords in shock at what he is done, having never wanted to kill Tilda. The Widow, out of fury for him fatally wounding Tilda, awakens her locked away Gift and attacks M.K. in a rage. M.K. has lost all will to fight and thus the Widow is able to stab him in the chest, killing him. After this, Gaius takes Tilda to a healer, and the Widow places the Azra compass in M.K.'s hand, apologizing for having to kill him, telling him that she hopes he found his Azra. She and Gaius then depart and blow up the Meridian Chamber with M.K.'s body inside.
