George Tarleton, better known as M.O.D.O.K. (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing), is the titular main protagonist villain of the Hulu series M.O.D.O.K.

He is an egotistical supervillain bent on world domination. He is the estranged husband of Jodie Ramirez-Modok, and father of Melissa and Lou.

He is voiced by Patton Oswalt.

Biography

Childhood

35 years before A.I.M.'s bankruptcy, George Tarleton confided in his mother about being bullied at school. George's mother comforted him, saying he'd achieve great things one day.

Raising a family

17 years before A.I.M.'s bankruptcy, Jodie and M.O.D.O.K. had to miss a third-eye blind concept due to the news that Jodie was pregnant.

9 months later, a baby girl was born, named Melissa after Melissa Etheridge, Melissa shared M.O.D.O.K.'s mutation, causing M.O.D.O.K. to fashion her own hover chair. Eventually another child who did not share M.O.D.O.K. and Melissa's mutation, Lou, was born and M.O.D.O.K. created a shapeshifting robot, the Super Adaptoid. Eventually, the family was able to move to a new house.

Battle with the Avengers

During 2009, Monica was hired onto A.I.M. and was able to kill a famous member of the Avengers, with M.O.D.O.K. taking credit for this achievement. M.O.D.O.K. later apologised for this and gave Monica complete freedom as a scientist, but resentment still lingered.

Rise to Power

GRUMBL Acquisition

During a fight with S.H.I.E.L.D. and Iron Man, M.O.D.O.K. failed at his plans to topple the world's economy but was able to retrieve one of Iron Man's boots, an achievement he celebrated greatly. Upon reaching his family home he was met with news of Jodie's new sponsorship and issues with Lou's upcoming bar-mitzvah. The next day, M.O.D.O.K. discussed A.I.M.'s future, being challenged on his leadership by Monica and being met with news of potential bankruptcy by the CPA supreme. After much resistance, M.O.D.O.K. made a deal with Austin van Der Sleet to allow GRUMBL to invest in A.I.M.. Upon returning to A.I.M. the next day, however, he found GRUMBL had taken control over A.I.M., causing him to retaliate. This retaliation was punished with a 3-day sabbatical and a neural inhibitor chip being implanted to prevent him from mind blasting fellow employees. M.O.D.O.K. decided to hatch a plan to stop the GRUMBL acquisition of A.I.M.; their plan was to shrink using Modified Chewable Pym Particles and hijack Austin's body with a Celebral Cortex Manipulator. An issue arose in this plan when M.O.D.O.K. accidentally implanted himself into Jodie's body, as she was talking over a business deal with Austin to boost her brand. Ultimately M.O.D.O.K. was unsuccessful in his attempt to stop the GRUMBL-A.I.M. acquisition but was able to negotiate with Austin to prevent his minions being fired. However, as a result of Jodie discovering M.O.D.O.K. hijacking her body and general issues with their marriage, Jodie decided to divorce M.O.D.O.K.

Moving Out

Not wanting to move out, M.O.D.O.K. attempted to take Jodie back in time to see the Third Eye Blind concert they missed to win her back, stealing the old Chrono-Crystal and time machine Monica invented back from S.H.I.E.L.D. However, once him and Jodie were ready to travel back in time the Chrono-Crystal was smashed by two elderly time travelling versions of M.O.D.O.K. and Jodie who then vanished. M.O.D.O.K. went to live in Dire Suits with Super Adaptoid.

GRUMBL Business Trip

M.O.D.O.K. was called to a GRUMBL leadership conference by Austin during his first weekend with the kids. Taking the kids to said conference, Melissa was able to use her social skills to help M.O.D.O.K. climb GRUMBL's social ladder. Growing impatient, however, M.O.D.O.K. opened a portal to Broodworld as a ploy to become more popular. However, the portal instead sent a group of Ciegrimites who begun partying with the GRUMBL employees, upsetting Melissa and causing her to leave. Upon retrieving a beachball from the portal to Broodworld M.O.D.O.K. made a shocking discovery, the Ciegrimites wiped out Brood and parties civilisations to death, returning to a room with numerous dead GRUMBL employees. Using Melissa's trick of exploiting insecurities, M.O.D.O.K. was able to manipulate the Ciegrimites into removing their shells and was able to kill them all. Leaving the business centre with Melissa and Lou, M.O.D.O.K. was able to partially reconcile with Melissa, though Melissa didn't need to visit him anymore as a result of their arrangement.

Heist of Captain America's Shield

After being rejected access to the Soho Lair and being issues the challenge to steal Captain America's Shield by the Leader, M.O.D.O.K. instead retreated to the Bar with No Name. There he met Armadillo, Poundcakes, Melter, Angar and Tenpin, who he managed to recruit as a crew in order to steal Captain America's shield under the pretense of stealing money. Upon getting Tenpin's pins from the Pawn shop, M.O.D.O.K. called upon the Super Adaptoid to act as their car. From there, the crew became increasingly distracted by the personal problems of each member; such as Armadillo's struggles with his ex-wife, Angar's anxieties over obsolescence and Poundcakes' experience with anti-mutant prejudice. Eventually, M.O.D.O.K. accidentally revealed that there was no money in this plan and he merely planned to steal Captain America's shield so he could be accepted into the Soho lair, a fact which offended the crew and caused them to abandon him. After wallowing in his own failure M.O.D.O.K. found Night Loaf, an eatery the crew had constantly talked about prior this point. There, M.O.D.O.K. bought the crew dinner and apologised to them. While initially resistant, the crew eventually forgave M.O.D.O.K., together they decided to revive the plan to steal Captain America's shield but instead hang it in the Bar with No Name. Taking the bus to Avengers tower, the entire team fell asleep on the way there and woke up in Coney Island, waking up they decided the night was worth the fun and bonding experience regardless. As they looked on at the sun at Coney Island beach, Melter passed away due to health problems. During this time, the Super Adaptoid was kidnapped by teenagers and later the Anomaly, but this was a fact the crew was oblivious to.

Turning Point with Monica

Attending Melter's funeral, M.O.D.O.K. was inspired to claim his legacy and kill Iron Man with a Black-Hole gun. However, M.O.D.O.K. found himself lost in A.I.M. bureaucracy. He vented his frustrations with Monica, who was forced to take a vacation by Austin; banding together, M.O.D.O.K. and Monica used a Silicone-Based humanoid body-doubles to pose as them for a mandated seminar while they worked to access the computer of Doris, a key figure in A.I.M. decision making. Distracting Doris by interfering with her connection, M.O.D.O.K. and Monica used Gary's birthday to draw Daphne, Doris' assistant, away from her office. Hacking into Doris' computer, they were able to rescind all of Monica's work days and grant M.O.D.O.K. access to the black hole gun. Unfortunately, Monica then betrayed M.O.D.O.K., revealing his plans to Austin and blaming the plan entirely on him. M.O.D.O.K. and Monica engaged in a fight, resulting in Monica being crowned as the scientist supreme. Humiliated and with his black-hole gun seized, M.O.D.O.K. confronted Iron Man at Avengers Tower, making a pathetic attempt to kill him which merely resulted in Iron Man ignoring him.

Great Bar Mitzvah War

Demoted to Mail duty, M.O.D.O.K. made a portal to Asgard so he could torment Thor as a coping mechanism. Upon a disasterous Bar Mitzvah rehearsal, M.O.D.O.K. was called by Jodie. M.O.D.O.K. took care of Lou for the day, trying to make Lou act more normal, M.O.D.O.K. pushed most of Lou's magical gear in the Asgardian Portal, causing Lou to jump in the portal and M.O.D.O.K. to follow after him. After landing in Asgard and having his Doomsday Chair's hovercraft technology destroyed by a nearby goat, M.O.D.O.K. saw Lou kidnapped by a group of Kobold Goblins. Transporting himself via a chariot and two goats, M.O.D.O.K. met a group of Asgardians whose commander he had accidentally killed due to his portal, denying any connection to their commander's death. Arriving at the Kobold Goblins' lair, however, M.O.D.O.K. found that Lou had become quite popular amongst the goblins by performing his magic tricks and would rather stay there if M.O.D.O.K. continued to dismiss his interests. M.O.D.O.K. decided the only way to save his son was to declare war on him, blaming the death of Balder on Lou and the Goblins.

The war lasted months, with the Asgardians and M.O.D.O.K. losing forces badly as a result of M.O.D.O.K.'s short-sightedness. Eventually the Goblins offered peace and, despite one last ditch effort by M.O.D.O.K. to wipe out the goblins, peace was achieved. Both sides went their separate ways while the Goblins sent M.O.D.O.K. to be executed. Lou was able to use his magic tricks to help M.O.D.O.K. escape from execution, making him warm to magic. Despite this, however, Lou's Rabbi told him that Lou was likely using his unconventional personality to push people away as a result of the divorce and there wasn't an easy answer, causing M.O.D.O.K. to leave on a note of uncertainty.

Jodie and Wonder Man

Ordering a Lasagne from a restaurant, M.O.D.O.K. ran into Jodie and discovered she was dating Wonder Man. Upon eating the Lasagne and wallowing in his apartment, M.O.D.O.K. was invited to a paperback release party for Jodie's new book in the hopes of deliberately provoking him and gain media notoriety. To try and impress Jodie, M.O.D.O.K. approached Melissa who helped him gain a makeover. Attending the party, M.O.D.O.K. eventually got in a fight with Wonder Man much to Jodie's delight. Going home disgraced, M.O.D.O.K. cleaned his room and read through Jodie's book.

Murder World

Noticing robot signals left for him by The Anomaly, M.O.D.O.K. sent a robot facsimile of himself to the Tarleton residence. This robot was met with a group of Robot Duplicates of the family, as the real Tarletons had been kidnapped. This robot had sex with Jodie and acted out M.O.D.O.K's fantasies while M.O.D.O.K. looked for the real Tarletons. Eventually, the robot self-destructed and M.O.D.O.K. was able to hack the restraints the Tarletons were in, freeing them. Meeting up at Arcade's Murderworld room, however, M.O.D.O.K. was met with 3 versions of each family, along with their captors; the Anomaly, Arcade and the Super Adaptoid. There, Arcade explained the nature of the game, with the true versions of the family needing to kill the robot duplicates to escape; Arcade then disorientated them and introduced two robotic duplicates of M.O.D.O.K. Eventually, the family was able to eliminate most of the robot duplicates, with the robots either being killed by the real versions, committing suicide or accidentally killing themselves. The only uncertainty left was the two Lous, who the family decided to spare due to their sweet nature. M.O.D.O.K. goaded the Anomaly into a fight, causing Arcade to leave in protest. The Anomaly ripped out a vital piece of circuitry from M.O.D.O.K., making Jodie retaliate and rip the Anomaly in half. Melissa was able to save M.O.D.O.K's life by re-attaching the piece of circuitry. The family, including the two Lous, went to dinner together. There, the Super Adaptoid came and apologized for betraying the family, causing them to reset him.

Leaving A.I.M.

Visiting Melter's grave and deciding to make a fresh start, M.O.D.O.K. began to do his work as a mailman; being polite and helpful, eventually offering to help fix the GRUMBL Grome's glitching software. Re-calibrating the Grome with a single wavelength that would send animals into a frenzy. Attacking Avengers Tower with Armadillo, Tenpin, Poundcakes and Angar, M.O.D.O.K. sold his shares in A.I.M. to Iron Man. M.O.D.O.K. was able to convince Monica to sell her shares, giving her a controlling stake in the company, upon showing her the business card to A-I-M 2. With M.O.D.O.K. and Monica being fired from A.I.M. and Gary quitting A.I.M., the 3 begun work A-I-M 2, with Monica as the Scientist Supreme and M.O.D.O.K. as the Scientist Supremer, using the Single Wavelength function to humiliate Iron Man and Wonder Man live on stage.

Final Battle with the Anomaly

During Lou's Bar Mitzvah, M.O.D.O.K. had invited no guests to Lou's reception based on a misunderstanding. He initially asked Melissa to help him gain teens for the dance. When this attempt failed, however, M.O.D.O.K. sent various creatures from his social circle instead, such as the Bar With No Name's patrons', the Ciegrimites and the Jiggle-Os. Noticing how miserable the Bar Mitzvah was becoming, M.O.D.O.K. went to talk with the Two Lous. The Lous explained that they felt ignored by M.O.D.O.K. and wanted to dance with him. Dancing with the two Lous, they eventually broke off as the Lous begun socialising with Carmilla while M.O.D.O.K. danced with Jodie, explaining her interest in reconciliation and more family dinners while making clear she didn't want to go back to the way things were. After the Super Adaptoid freed two Ciegrimites, the Anomaly burst into the Bar Mitzah, the version Jodie had previously killed being a robot duplicate, freezing many of the guests in time and launching at missiles the family. However, M.O.D.O.K. was able to shoot the chrono crystal inside the Anomalies' head, freezing the missiles and everyone in the room asides from the Anomaly and M.O.D.O.K. from there, the Anomaly explained his backstory and motivations, a version of George Tarleton from an alternate timeline, the Anomaly had seen a million possible futures and one where he succeeded. In this reality, his family had died and the grief and trauma motivated M.O.D.O.K. to defeat the Avengers and take over the world. Despite M.O.D.O.K.'s protestations, the Anomaly unfroze time, killing his family.

Emperor M.O.D.O.K.

Upon the Anomaly killing his entire family, M.O.D.O.K. defeated the Avengers and became Emperor of earth, displaying the Avengers' items and weapons throughout his palace. Vowing to bring his family back to live in his empire, M.O.D.O.K. ended up experimenting on the Anomaly in an attempt to harness his Chrono-Crystal, killing him in the process, but M.O.D.O.K. refuses to relent swearing that he will find a way to save his family and bringing them to this timeline so they can revel in his success.
