Melissa Bergman, also known as MB, is the main antagonist of the 2010 action-adventure game Metroid: Other M.
She is a biological android based on Mother Brain, who was created by the Galactic Federation to control the Metroids as bioweapons. However, after gaining sentience, MB was ordered to be shut down, causing her to go rogue, kill off her superiors, and release the Metroids aboard the Bottle Ship, mirroring the actions of her previous incarnation and causing Samus Aran to get involved in stopping her.
She was voiced by Shizuka Itō in Japanese and Sarah Naid in English.
Appearance[]
MB is a young woman with blonde hair with a pin Madeline gave to her in her past on the left side and blue eyes. She wears a white lab coat and red knee length capri pants with pink pumps with ankle straps.
Biography[]
Origins[]
MB was created an infrastructure that helped regenerate and control Space Pirates special forces after Mother Brain. However, when scientists began to build Metroids, MB developed a human form that helped create a connection between the creatures and their motherhood, which inspired Samus to form an ideal relationship that was not based on control. She was called "Melissa Bergman" by Madeline to make her feel more human. MB liked that name because it made it sound like Madeline was referring to her as a daughter.
But eventually, MB manifested her own emotions and criticized the scientists' achievements, making the scientists grow concern of a potential rebellion. In the eyes of the higher class, the use of MB as a simple tool as originally intended began to be a problem, and the operations undertaken by BOTTLE SHIP were viewed as a threat that could jeopardize them. They eventually decided to reprogram her AI, which only exacerbated the situation. MB was getting arrested by the scientists, and pleaded Madeline to help her. But Madeline reluctantly refused, which caused MB's personality to change drastically. Claiming that every human being should be "judged" for their actions, she killed her persecutors and takes control of the station. Using intense brain waves, MB killed all scientists except Madeline, who leads and disappears all living things on the spaceship (except for Metroids). MB eventually decided to attack the Federation capital by bringing all bioweapon cargoes from the Bottle Ship.
Metroid: Other M[]
MB watched Samus from a window overlooking the Experiment Floor in the Cryosphere. When she found out she had been spotted, she ran away to the Materials Storehouse and Samus chased her, trying to convince her that she came to save her despite MB's denial. They separated after Samus was attacked by a soldier using an RB176 Ferrocrusher.
Later, Samus enters the Bioweapon Research Center in the Biosphere, and MB enters the main laboratory. Surprised by Samus' presence of the office, she runs to the storage room and closes the door. Once again, Samus tries to convince her that she has no malice. She opens the door and tricks Samus into believing she is an ally as she takes the name of Dr. Madeline Bergman. "Madeline" tells Samus what happened in the Bottle Ship.
She reveals the Federation has attempted to recreate special-forces units of bioweapons based on the Space Pirates. To this end, the Federation captured a number of Space Pirates and created a cyber Zebesian to form the core of its power. She explains that a "certain presence" have made the creatures cruel and uncontrollable. "Madeline" continues to say that if left unchecked, the ship's Zebesians sent distress signals for fear of emerging as real Space Pirates.
At this point, "Madeline" leads Samus to a computer terminal and claims to be aware of a more dangerous plan. She explains that scientists have taken the remains of DNA found in the power suit of the office used to make copies of Metroid and Ridley. Shocked, Samus asks if scientists have also created a Mother Brain clone to control the Metroid. "Madeline" responds that an artificial intelligence called "MB" was created, which evolved and became self-aware. She told Samus that the Metroids were in a hidden area called Sector Zero and Adam Malkovich initially approved the program. Samus runs to destroy the Metroids and MB in the area and tells "Madeline" to hide. A figure approaches "Madeline", and she turns to him before the sound of gunfire.
Samus heads to Room MW after the destruction of Sector Zero and encounters another survivor, whose name is Madeline Bergman. Samus gets confused and tells her she has already met someone by that name. After she shows Samus her ID, the real Madeline reveals to Samus that the woman she met earlier was none other than MB herself.
Final Battle and Death[]
After Madeline reveals to Samus MB's origins and goals, they both sympathize her, but she still hunts them. After the conversation, MB appears ready to attack Samus and Madeline with James' Freeze Gun. Despite Samus' protests, Madeline approaches MB as she apologizes to her for what she and the scientists have done, since she realized that they were wrong. MB tells Madeline that she was not wrong, since she was going to bring judgement on the "foolish" humans, but because of Samus and Adam, she failed. She then gives a dark stare to Samus and tells her that she must "understand the weight of her crime" and "pay" the price for what she's done. Madeline once again tries to reconcile with MB, but MB refuses to listen to her any longer and tells her that she, Samus, and the other humans will all be judged. However, after Madeline pleads her to recall her human side by saying she would never fail her again, MB gives up her weapon. Then she drives toward Madeline, appearing to push her away from the path of a projectile that freezes her. The freezing fire was fired by soldiers of the Galactic Federation Army, who ran into the room. MB melts herself, throws the Freeze Gun at Madeline, and angrily summons several Desbrachians to battle Samus and the Galactic Federation soldiers. She also calls in nearby Ghalmanians and Mighty Griptians for further reinforcements.
Finally, Madeline stops the battle by reluctantly shooting MB with the Freeze Gun. The soldiers led by the Colonel immediately seize the opportunity to shoot down MB. MB gets killed, and Madeline sadly mourns her, calling her Melissa.

Quotes[]
“ | Behind closed doors, the Galactic Federation was trying to create a special-forces unit composed of bioweapons. In order to make it happen, they were attempting to create an organization modeled after the Space Pirates, with the Zebesians at the center. But, because of a certain presence...the life-forms became ferocious. We were no longer able to control them. | „ |
~ MB |
“ | You're Samus Aran, right? The one who annhilated the Space Pirates? Metroid remnants were attached to your suit when you returned from Zebes. They were reproduced from a piece of cell structure salvaged by the Federation, and they are in this facility. | „ |
~ MB explaining to Samus about her Power Suit. |
“ | We developed an AI program that would reproduce Mother Brain's thought processes. We called it "MB." | „ |
~ "Madeline" on MB. |
“ | What you met was MB. She's an android. She was created with the intellectual data of Mother Brain and consequently developed Mother Brain's consciousness as well. [...] MB was the artificial intelligence originally developed to regenerate and control Space Pirate special forces. Because we wanted it to control these special forces through telepathy, we were forced to model its infrastructure after Mother Brain. At that time, MB didn't have a human form. Before long we started to see the viability of creating Metroid clones. Once we did... MB started to take on her current shape. [...] Because we needed the first Metroid hatchling to recognize MB as its mother, she had to take on the form of a living thing. With that as our theoretical basis, we were able to create the ideal relationship with the Metroid. One that wasn't based on dominance or control. [...] Once our MB was in a human form, she excelled. As an interface between us and them, her skills with personal interaction humanized her to a great extent. Her confidence was unwavering, and her ability to learn was greater than we'd expected. But then... She developed emotions. Then a nascent sense of herself. She began asserting her own thoughts, and her opinions began to contradict ours. It's quite typical for artificial intelligence to evolve as a result of self-analysis. However, there's no precedent for an AI like MB developing emotions. It's possible that her interactions with the Metroids brought it about, but we don't know for sure. [...] And that was when we decided to alter her AI program. [...] On the day we were going to alter MB's program, right before my eyes... I watched her being restrained. She reached out to me and asked me for help. But there was nothing I could do... My presence that day caused a disturbing reaction in her. She was fixated on me... [...] MB was trying to get revenge on the Federation Army... and on us. It's possible all humans have become the target of her hatred. [...] She's backed into a corner. And her hatred is entirely focused on you and me right now... | „ |
~ Madeline telling Samus about MB's origins. |
“ | Madeline: Please, MB. We have to get past this. MB: No. You will all be judged. Madeline: It's OK now. I won't ever fail you again. I promise. I'm so sorry, Melissa... |

~ MB and Madeline's conversation. |
“ | What would have happened if we hadn't been called there? Might the furious MB have attacked the Galactic Federation and brought about its utter destruction? Melissa wasn't insane, no... One day, a consciousness simply bloomed within her. And those that caused it to bloom—the humans—called it insanity. "I was the insane one." That was what Madeline muttered softly as she sank into sleep. The selfish conceits of humans drove MB to violence. It was their distorted perceptions and greed that awoke such fury in the fledgling girl's heart. Her thought was to punish the foolish and conceited. But MB could not complete her mission. As Melissa, she was defeated. |

In Super Smash Bros. For Wii U, MB appears as an unlockable trophy.
Trivia[]
- MB's brain waves seems far from perfect as a means of manipulating the Metroids. This supporting evidence is that scientists aboard Bottle Ship create a humanoid form of MB to experiment with new Metroids that tame samples by imprinting their theories on individuals resembling real living organisms.
- Her hairpin is shaped like a Metroid's tri-nucleus, which foreshadows how the blonde "Madeline" is MB.
