Highlord Ma'lash is the ruler of the Tal'darim and a major antagonist in the real time strategy video game StarCraft II, appearing in the Legacy of the Void campaign as one of the main antagonists.

History[]

Ma'lash rose up the Tal'darim Chain of Ascension through sheer brutality and strength. His power was so great that many believed he had been blessed by Amon himself, earning him the nickname the "Blade of Amon". Eventually, Ma'lash slew all of his opponents in Rak'Shir duels and was crowned Highlord of the Tal'darim,

At some point, Ma'lash became aware of the true nature of Amon and that the Tal'darim would not be spared when Amon finally awoke to destroy all of creation, as they too were creations of the Xel'Naga. However, Ma'lash kept this revelation secret from the other Tal'darim, seeing no way to stop Amon and no point in trying to resist the dark god.

However, his First Ascendant Nuroka also became aware of Amon's true plans and challenged Ma'lash to a Rak'Shir duel. Second Ascendant Guraj declared for Ma'lash while Third Ascendant Zenish declared for Nuroka so he could fight Guraj and take her spot on the Chain of Ascension. Fourth Ascendant Alarak was present but did not declare for either side at first.

During the battle, Guraj slayed Zenish only for Alarak to then intervene and slay Guraj in turn. Alarak then assisted Nuroka in fighting against Amon, but at a critical point declared for Ma'lash and granted his power to Ma'lash to defeat Nuroka. Overpowering Nuroka, despite having the power to finish him off, Ma'lash drew the duel out so he could enjoy breaking Nuroka's body and mind before finally killing him.

With Nuroka dead, Alarak was in line to become the new First Ascendant. However, Ma'lash was wary of his power and the fact that he could one day challenge him to take control of the Tal'darim. Despite this, after Alarak affirmed that his faith in Amon had not wavered, Ma'lash chose to keep Alarak alive, as they had already lost too many high-ranking Tal'darim, and Alarak became First Ascendant.

Ma'lash later led the Tal'darim to the Xel'Naga temple where Amon had been resurrected. A group of forces led by Dark Prelate Zeratul soon arrived to investigate the return of Amon, and Ma'lash ordered his forces to bar the entrances of the temple to prevent them from getting inside. While the Tal'darim held off the Daelaam, Ma'lash met with a manifestation of Amon, who ordered him to ready his forces for war. Zeratul and his forces eventually breached the temple and maid their way to the void conduit, but Ma'lash warped away before they could confront him.

However, Alarak, wary of Amon's true intentions and what he would do to the Tal'darim, made an alliance with the Daelaam and Hierarch Artanis and challenged Ma'lash to Rak'Shir. At first the two combatants appeared equivalent in strength until Alarak, unexpectedly, received assistance from the Daelaam forces. Ma'lash summoned several Hybrids to aid him, but Alarak's side overpowered Ma'lash's and Ma'lash was ultimately killed by Alarak and cast down to the fiery pit, earning Alarak the position of Highlord.
