Maa-Kalaratri is the main antagonist of the 2019 live-action horror film Itsy Bitsy. She is the ancient goddess of spiders, whom was worshipped by a tribe of people before they were ambushed and she was stolen. After being awakened from her tomb, known as the "Dark-Egg of Maa-Kalaratri", she wrecked havoc among the family members of the home that she had been brought to in the form of a giant spider.

Characteristics[]

Maa-Kalarati Goddess Depiction 2

A humanoid depiction of Maa-Kalarati.

Clark described Maa-Kalaratri as the Spider Goddess, a being who existed before both humans and time itself. She is said to be a "weaver of destiny", someone who presides over the humans between the darkness in the stars. Having a desire to be worshipped , she was unhappy to learn of the decline in respect for her as the years went by. One day, she emerged from a crack in the Earth and decimated a village of former-worshippers. After this, they began to worship her again and offer her sacrifices, that being the lives of the village's newborns. The villagers would dress themselves in spider-like attire and decorate themselves with markings of spiders. It was their belief that she brought prosperity to the village's harvest, but whether or not this is true is unknown.

The goddess was depicted in many one drawing as a humanoid with three arms, with a necklace of human heads wrapped around her neck. Another drawing showed her to be a spider with a humanoid head whose hair was decorated with jewelry. It is unknown whether or not the goddess ever took any of these forms, or if these were depictions drawn by those whom had never seen her.

As a spider, the goddess behaves as a giant arachnoid she appears to be. She takes her time before striking, stalking her victims for days at a time before ever taking any action. This is unless her victim got too close or saw her, which would cause her to bite them in retaliation. She was also seen preforming normal spider-like behavior like laying eggs and molting. She also seems to have somewhat of a human sense of intelligence at some points, like when she jumped on the entrance to the attic to get Cambria to fall when she was able to successfully use a molted form of herself to trick Kara into thinking it was her, and when she played dead after being smacked against a wall.

Biography[]

Past[]

Maa-Kalaratri was said to have existed before time was time, and before humans existed. She used to be vastly worshipped, but after worshipped declined, she reemerged and decimated her now non-worshipers, taking a chief's daughter with her. To appease her, the tribe would offer blood sacrifices from babies from the village, the people believing that she would help crops and other such things. The goddess was kept inside of what was known as the "Dark-Egg of Maa-Kalaratri", and only the High Priests of the tribe had ever touched it during the harvest season.

This worship of the goddess continued into the modern era, until her worshippers were ambushed and killed by a group of thieves whom took her egg with them.

Itsy Bitsy[]

After her worshippers were killed, she had been stolen and brought to an artifact collector named Clark as a gift. One of the thieves had been bitten by her offscreen, so he was shot and killed by one of the other thieves. It was revealed that the reason the thief had brought the egg to the collector was because he resented the worshippers, whom he referred to as savages, for having supposedly given his daughter malaria.

The thief later returned to the home and picked up the egg, spitting and cursing it before smashing it on the ground. After smashing it, the spider began to emerge from an egg sack that was inside the egg. The man was bitten offscreen, and later died during his car ride away from the home. After the man was killed, Clark was seen researching the goddess through books and old texts. Later that night, the spider had relocated herself to the upstairs bathroom and resided in the tub unbeknownst to Kara, who was looking through pills. After this, the spider continued to spy on and follow Kara as she walked around the property.

Offscreen, the spider had created herself a nest in the attic, where she killed the family cat after it had found her there. Later that same night, the spider was seen under Kara's bed, watching her as she walked around the room. The next day, Clark found Jesse and tried to get him to help with fixing the shattered egg, unknowing of what had been released from it. Jesse asked what the markings meant, and Clark explained the legend of Maa-Kalaratri. While telling the story, the spider spied on Cambria from a tree while the young girl played outside. Like with Kara, the spider followed her throughout the home, Cambria sometimes noticing the noises the spider made as she crawled around. Thinking that the noises in the attic were the cat, she went up to explore, and while she did she was stalked the spider. When existing the attic, Cambria gently tried to close the door, but the spider jumped on the entrance which caused her to fall the ground.

Later that night, the spider was seen molting in the attic, goo gushing out from her mouth as she did. After everyone had gone to sleep, she emerged from the attic and headed to Clark's room. After entering the room, she crawled into his bed and bit his foot. Clark woke up and fell to the floor, horrified at the sight of his foot and the spider. She crawled on his arms into the bathroom in an attempt to escape, but he was eaten shortly after. The next day, Clark was found dead and hauled off to the hospital. Later that night, the spider was shown to be laying an egg sack in a chest upstairs. After everyone had gone to bed, the spider crawled into the children's rooms and kidnapped them, bringing her into her lair in the attic. Kara later found them in the attic, and quietly rescued them while keeping her eyes on what she thought was the spider. As the kids escaped, Kara heard a noise in the corner. As she looked over, the spider leaped from the shadows and bit her neck. The spider crawled out of the attic, but Kara was able to scare her out of the window by throwing a lamp at her. Jesse went downstairs and called the police, and as they waited for the authorities to arrive the looked around the house for the spider.

Cambria found the spider in her room, and after the spider noticed her, she lunged at the girl and her fangs went through her hand. Kara arrived to smashed the spider against the wall, after doing so the spider curled up like she had died. As Cambria was treated for her wounds, the spider left the room without them noticing. Jesse later found the spider again, and again the spider lunged. Hit jumped on top of Jesse, who was barely able to keep the spider from sinking her fangs into the boy. Again Kara arrived just in time, this time picking up the spider and tearing two of her legs off and then proceeding to beat her to death. As the cops arrived, they looked down on the spider's corps which was lying in a pile of her own remains.

While Maa-Kalaratri might have died in her large spider form, it was revealed that the eggs she left behind had begun to hatch, implying that this was not the end of her reign.

Trivia[]

  • The thief at the beginning of the film gave some trivia about the black egg that the goddess was kept in. He said that looking inside would be to stare into the "dark mirror" of your ancient soul. He also said that it is foolish to touch the egg without an offering.
