Mace Face is the Armadillo-themed robot of the Machine Empire serving King Mondo who served as a supporting antagonist in Power Rangers Zeo. He served as the main antagonist of the episode "Found and Lost", a major antagonist in the following episode "Brother, Can You Spare An Arrowhead?", and a minor antagonist in the two-part finale of Power Rangers In Space "Countdown to Destruction."
He is voiced by the late Brad Orchard who previously voiced Pipebrain, the Tube Monster, Centiback, the Ravenator and the Hydro Hog in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Main Drain and later voiced Stenchy both also in Zeo and the Horror Bulls and Hoothead in Power Rangers In Space.
Personality[]
Mace Face was an extremely ruthless and violent monster willing to cause absolute destruction for his masters. He also possessed a sadistic streak; laughing as he defeated his enemies and mocking them with Mondo's ultimatum although he was very loyal to the Machine King.
Biography[]
Past[]
Mace Face was manufactured as a giant monster by the Machine Empire, working under King Mondo and Queen Machina. With their monsters and never-ending army of Cogs, the Machine Empire was able to devastate and conquer entire galaxies. Mace Face was especially effective due to his virtually indestructible armor and ability to turn into an unstoppable ball, making him a monster favoured by Mondo for missions that required brute force.
Zeo[]
In 1996, King Mondo leads his Machine Empire to the Moon where they drive out Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa but their invasion is ultimately stalled by the interference of the Zeo Rangers.
After Tommy reunites with his long-lost brother David Trueheart, David bonds with his brother but mentions the power of their shared arrowhead which Prince Sprocket overhears and reports back to his parents. Intent on harnessing the power for himself, King Mondo has his Cogs kidnap David when he storms out of the Youth Center in frustration and trap the man in a cave under the local Native American reservation. With his hostage secured, he sends Mace Face to Earth to deliver his ransom upon Queen Machina's suggestion to "let [the Rangers] know they're serious and not to be toyed with." Mace Face is first seen rampaging through the city in ball form before rolling to the countryside where he meets and overwhelms the Red Battlezord and newly repaired Zeo Megazord. After assuming his true monster form and knocking the Battlezord out of the sky when it tries to flee, the monster blasts them and the Rangers are forced to retreat. Before they leave though, Mace Face delivers Mondo's ultimatum; give the second half of the arrowhead to King Mondo or he will destroy Angel Grove and Tommy will never see David again.
After watching the Rangers fail to form the new Zeo MegaBattlezord due to Tommy being mentally unstable over concern for his brother, Mondo later sends Mace Face back to Earth to destroy Angel Grove. Four of the Zeo Rangers confront him whilst Tommy stays behind to search for David and sort out his mind but Mace Face easily defeats them with the aid of some Quadrafighters. Although the Quadrafighters soon withdraw, Mace Face gains the upper-hand with his claws until Tommy returns to battle to help his teammates. Although he Red Battlezord's energy spin attack and gatling blasts fail to damage the monster the Rangers are able to form the new Zeo MegaBattlezord for the first time. Mace Face assumes his ball form again, confident that even this new formation would be useless against him, but the new Zord's cannon blasts are finally able to penetrate his armor and obliterate the monster.
A human sized Mace Face is later rebuilt and seen in the audience at Prince Gasket's Machine Arena when Tommy forces Jason to fight Altor. However, the Rangers are later able to escape after Tritor destroys the shield generator which renders Gasket's plan a failure.
In Space[]
Two years later, Mace Face joins the Machine Empire and General Havoc's army which attacks KO-35 and the Phantom Ranger's home-world. Although they defeat the Blue Senturion and Phantom Ranger, the Eye Guy is turned to dust with the rest of the army when Zordon's Energy Wave washes over the universe.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Power: Mace Face was the most powerful monster to appear in Zeo up to that point, being far more durable than Main Drain or Punch-A-Bunch as the attacks that destroyed them did not even scratch him. He was single-handedly able to force the Zeo Megazord and the Red Battlezord into a stalemate without the need for a distraction like Main Drain needed.
- Strength: Mace Face could knock the Red Battlezord out of the sky and knock around the Zeo Megazord with single slashes from his claws as well as a kick.
- Armour: Mace Face had almost impenetrably thick blue scaled armour; being immune to by the Zeo IV Battle Helmet's lightning and both the Red Battlezord's energy spin attack and gatling blasts without either so much as scratching him. It took the power of the Zeo MegaBattlezord to penetrate the monster's armour and destroy him.
- Agility: Mace Face was agile enough to roll from being thrown down by the Zeo Megazord and then roll to his feet.
- Expert Fighter: Mace Face was able to easily outmatch and completely overwhelm the Zeo Megazord with his claws.
- Speech: Mace Face could speak despite lacking a mouth.
- Ball Transformation: Mace Face's signature ability where he could curl himself up in a whirl of grey wind and turn into an unstoppable and almost indestructible sphere at will. He could do this in mere seconds, allowing him to instantly transform in mid-air or fast enough to be able to roll to his feet.
- Self-Propulsion: In his ball form, Mace Face could make himself roll forward and become an unstoppable force.
- Bounce Attack: Mace Face could also bounce off the ground and slam into the enemy with enough force to knock back the Red Battlezord.
- Flight Attack: In his ball form, Mace Face could fly into the air and repeatedly slam into his enemies. These rams were strong enough to stagger the Zeo Megazord and Red Battlezord.
- Monster Transformation: Mace Face could also turn from his ball form back into his true form by uncurling his body in another swirl of grey wind.
- Self-Propulsion: In his ball form, Mace Face could make himself roll forward and become an unstoppable force.
- Super Jumps: Mace Face could jump long distances with single leaps.
- Lightning Blasts: Mace Face could fire powerful blue lightning blasts from his eyes which were strong enough to knock the Zeo Megazord and the Red Battlezord back with one hit.
Arsenal[]
- Claws: Being armadillo based, Mace Face had no weapons but possessed razor sharp claws that he would use to cut and slash his enemies.
