“ | What did you expect, a monster? My name's George. You probably knew that already. You're still trying to wrap your mind around it, huh? I don't have any answers to give. Nothing I can say is going to make you sleep easier at night. I wasn't beaten. I wasn't molested. Mommy didn't abuse me. Daddy never raped me. I'm only what I am. And that's all there is to it! There's no mystery. Things I do, I do them because I like them! Because I want to! | „ |
~ Machine explains why he kills people. |
George Anthony Higgins, better known as Machine, is a sadist and the secondary antagonist of the 1999 thriller 8mm, in which he is depicted as part of a pornography ring that specializes in hardcore, violent bondage films, including at least one snuff film.
He was portrayed by Chris Bauer, who also portrayed Lloyd Gettys in The Devil's Advocate, Ted Bryar in Criminal Minds, and Tom Cole in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Biography[]
Machine is an actor in the violent, sadomasochistic pornography films of Dino Velvet. His "specialty" is to rape, torture, and murder young women and girls on film while wearing a leather hood and bondage gear.
In 1993, Velvet hired Machine to kill Mary Ann Matthews in a snuff film for lawyer Daniel Longdale on behalf of his wealthy client, Charles Christian. After Christian's death six years later, his widow hires private investigator Tom Welles to find out if the film is real.
When Welles discovers that Velvet was the mastermind behind Mary Ann's death, Velvet orders Machine to kidnap and kill Welles' partner, Max California, right in front of him. In the ensuing fight, Velvet and Longdale are killed, while Welles wounds Machine and escapes.
Shortly afterwards, Welles traces Machine to his home, where he lives in the basement of his elderly mother's house. Welles sneaks into the house, intending to kill Machine. Machine finds him there and attacks him, but Welles gets the upper hand and unmasks him - revealing an unremarkable, bespectacled man. Machine says that his real name is George, and that his violent sexual appetites are not the result of childhood abuse; he rapes, tortures, and kills women simply because he enjoys it. He then attacks Welles again, but Welles overpowers him and and stabs him to death.

Machine's death.
Personality[]
Machine is a sadistic psychopath with no empathy or remorse. He particularly enjoys raping and murdering women, though he is willing to attack or kill anyone who gets in his way. He is brutally honest about his true nature; upon encountering Welles, instead of trying to excuse his crimes, George openly admits that his tendencies have nothing to do with his upbringing or a trauma of any kind, confirming that he was born with a lust for torture and murder. His mother has no knowledge of Machine's secret life, indicating that Machine can successfully hide his dark side even from those closest to him.
Trivia[]
- Mary Ann Matthews is the only girl confirmed to have been raped and murdered by Machine. Longdale stated that snuff pornography as such did not exist, thus the necessity of hiring Dino Velvet for a special production. It is nevertheless possible that Machine had murdered others during his association with Dino.
