Macht or Macht of El Dorado is a major antagonist in the adventure anime and manga series Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. He is the most powerful of the Seven Sages of Destruction, the servants of the Demon King until his defeat against the Hero Party. Around 600 years prior to the main story, he was one of the several mages to have engaged in a battle against the elf mage Frieren.
He is one of the eleven mages who have defeated Frieren in battle. An anomaly within his kind, he developed a curiosity for humans, abandoning his assigned position to delve into their understanding, even pledging allegiance to the lord of the City of Weise, Lord Glück. At some time in the past, regardless of his interest in humanity, he was imprisoned by the Continental Magic Association following his action of transmuting of the entire area of Weise into gold. There, he stayed until his encounter with Frieren once again. He is also the master of the human imperial mage Denken.
Appearance[]
Macht is a towering demon with horns of abnormally long length in zigzag shapes, long crimson-colored hair, and blue-colored irises. His eyes also appear weary because of the creases under them.
For attire, he sports a long blue coat that covers his left arm. It serves as his form of fighting which provides him the ability to alter materials to gold at will. The cloth can also be shapeshifted into a shield and even a sword. For the rest of his body, he is cloaked in a high-collared, knee-length dark green shirt, adorned with three golden tasseled braces on his right arm, Macht dons the Stone Bracelet of Sovereignty beneath his sleeves. A golden tassel graces his shirt, extending from the left shoulder across his chest. His appearance concludes with a pair of red gloves.
Personality[]
Abstract concepts like malevolence, righteousness, culpability, and spite appear alien to him, and he lacks comprehension of ethical principles. Despite his indifference, Macht harbors a distaste for skirmishes and battles, partly due to finding them uninspiring. His aversion to combat does not stem from a moral opposition to violence but rather from a lack of enthusiasm for such pursuits. Nevertheless, he exhibits capricious behavior at times, acting on impulse without discernible patterns.
Macht, a demon distinguished by his frigid and impassive demeanor, possesses formidable and self-reliant characteristics. Unlike many infernal entities, he refrains from participating in conflicts or causing harm to humans, primarily because his formidable magic enables effortless resolution of disputes.
He can also demonstrate tenacity, particularly in his pursuit of understanding humans and striving for coexistence, even jeopardizing his life for this unconventional objective. Macht's capability to imitate human speech and mannerisms, coupled with his assimilation into human society, creates a facade of friendliness and helpfulness. However, this conduct serves as a guide to earn people's trust and mislead them, propelled by his demonic nature rather than a genuine inclination for companionship. Proud of his magical prowess, Macht takes umbrage when his abilities face scrutiny or insult. He esteems his proficiency in employing Zoltraak, a "grand demon magic," and asserts his supremacy in wielding it compared to humans.
After being mortally wounded he laments not being able to achieve human emotions but finds solace in his human friend Gluck comforting him in his final moments, with Gluck even offering to go to Hell when he dies so he can help him find the emotions he seeks.
