Hold your horses...I'm the one in charge here! And here's this to remind you!
~ Mad Jim briefly betraying his accomplices.
Thunderation! Where is he?
~ Mad Jim's last words before his death.

Mad Jim is the main antagonist of Le Sosie de Lucky Luke/Lucky Luke's Lookalike, the second story of the 1949 Lucky Luke comic book Dick Digger's Gold Mine.

He is the exact doppelganger of Lucky Luke, who has committed a robbery inside the Goldberry Bank and shot everybody inside. After he was put behind bars by the sheriff, he was offered a deal by two thugs, Stan Strand and Tiny Charley Chick, offering him to have him bailed out of prison in exchange for half of the money he stole inside the Goldberry Bank, which he reluctantly agrees. After escaping, he impersonates Lucky Luke himself, making the real Lucky Luke get arrested for crimes he didn't commit (due to the fact that both Luke and Mad Jim strongly ressemble each other) and is nearly hanged. Luke then decides to get on the trail of both Mad Jim and his accomplices. Eventually, Mad Jim is finally killed by Lucky Luke in a one-on-one duel.

Appearance[]

Mad Jim strongly ressembles Lucky Luke, having the same face and clothing as him.

Biography[]

At the start of the story, Lucky Luke enters the saloon, which oddly scares everyone away. Confused on what is going on, he catches one customer, Little Joker, who was hiding inside a barrel, asking him why he is scared of Lucky Luke, making him realize that who was holding him was the real Lucky Luke. Relieved, he tells Luke about Mad Jim, showing his wanted poster. Luke is shocked by this, as Mad Jim was an outlaw that looked exactly like him, which is why everybody in the saloon was running away from him. In the saloon, Pedro, the barman, tells Luke what Mad Jim has done to make the town fear, which is revealed that Mad Jim had caused a robbery in the Goldberry Bank, shooting everybody inside, as well as other nasty things.

Mad Jim himself is first seen locked inside his cell, receiving a note that was thrown by two thugs, Stan Strand and Tiny Charley Chick. They offer to have him bailed out of prison and have a lookalike in the cell instead, in exchange for half of the stolen money. Mad Jim reluctantly agrees by tying his bandana on the bars of the cells. After he is bailed out, Mad Jim attempts to mount Jolly Jumper so he can get out of the town, but seeing him as suspicious, he rides him around like a wild horse, resulting in him falling inside a well. The three then leave the town.

Back in the town, Lucky Luke sees the note that Mad Jim had shrivled into a ball and reads it, seeing that the town wanted to make him pay for Mad Jim's crimes, forcing him to attempt at escaping the jail before dawn. However, still mistaken as Mad Jim, Luke is caught and nearly hanged by the sheriff. Fortunately, Luke manages to escape thanks to Handy Harry's clumsiness, as the rope was accidentally caught on one of his boots, causing him to trip on the ground and the rope to fall down. This also leads to a fight between the townsfolk on who shall replace him as the executioner, though it is later proved to be useless as Luke already got away.

Meanwhile, Mad Jim and his two accomplices are riding to Tortoise Canyon, where he hid his money. Stan Strand asks him if they can split it that night, but Mad Jim, not wanting his identity to be discovered, tells him to pretend that he is the good and honest Lucky Luke. Once in his lair, Mad Jim opens the box containing the money he stole. Charley then tells him to start dividing up, but he refuses, as he chooses to pool the fund instead. This infuriates Charley, who grabs him, wanting him to share the money to him like he promised, but he reminds them that he is the one in charge, before punching him away. This leads to a brief shootout, with the victory of Mad Jim, who ties both Stan and Charley up, as the two are disappointed for his betrayal.

He then looks at himself on his mirror, noticing a small part of beard on his chin that he needs to shave off. However, when he does shave it off, it still remains, which is later revealed that behind the mirror was none other than Lucky Luke, who followed his trail all along. However, Lucky Luke is later caught by Indians, allowing Mad Jim and his accomplices to escape again. After escaping, Luke finds Mad Jim at a campfire alongside his accomplices and eventually catches him at gunpoint while he was gathering water to drink. The three are then arrested again and sent to jail, but due to both Luke and Mad Jim being lookalikes, they are both locked behind bars. Fortunately, Mad Jim is later exposed when Jolly Jumper recognizes the real Lucky Luke, causing him to escape through a window.

Mad Jim quickly rushes inside the Horseshoe Saloon, waiting for Luke. Lucky Luke then shows up behind him, asking him to drop his gun. The two then shoot each other, resulting in Mad Jim's death.

Trivia[]

  • Mad Jim is the only character in the entire Lucky Luke comic book series to die, as Phil Defer and Bob Dalton's deaths were censored in both Outlaw and Phil Defer. After this story, Lucky Luke no longer killed anyone, instead serving justice.
