~ Madame Horos introducing herself to Rikou Takisubo |
Swami Laura Horos, also known as Madame Horos, is a major antagonist in A Certain Magical Index: New Testament, serving as the secondary antagonist of the Coronzon Arc.
She is a professional fraud and swindler who posed as Anna Sprengel after stealing her body, which Mathers believed for a time, before she brought ruins to the Golden Dawn and made off with crucial cabal documents. She resurfaces to help Rikou Takitsubo in saving Shiage Hamazura now that he's pursued for allying with Coronzon.
Appearance[]
While possessing Anna Sprengel, Madame Horos appeared as a tall young woman with long reddish-blonde hair which is rolled into large ringlet curls and squished flat at the ends into several fried shrimp shapes, with rose decorations throughout. She also wore a gaudy red dress, looking like a leotard with a long skirt attached and partially exposed cleavage.
Personality[]
Regarded as a despicable fraud, Madame Horos is an exceptionally greedy, deceptive and manipulative woman who is held in great contempt by those who she has swindled in the past. She displays little to no qualms with manipulating or exploiting others for her own gain, best shown when she took advantage of Rikou Takitsubo's feelings and desire to aid Shiage Hamazura so she could kill him. During the events, Madame Horos behaved in a cheerful manner and speaks in a singsongy tone of voice as if she was singing a nursery rhyme. She is also quite sadistic, showing some enjoyment during her initial manipulations of Rikou. Her words in general were described as sweet but with wickedness within.
While posing as Anna Sprengel, Madame Horos presented herself as a powerful and knowledgeable Rosicrucian magician, often emphasizing her assumed identity by stating she was the one who appeared in the Sprengel Letters as the ruler of the No. 1 temple in Germany and the one who gave permission for the Golden Dawn and the Isis-Urania Temple's founding. In addition to her claims of power and presenting knowledge, Madame Horos claims that she's planning to deal with the remnants of the Golden Dawn due to having some responsibility in authorizing the cabal's creation. However, it's revealed by Aiwass that Horos had no interest in the matter and only desired to make an appearance as Anna Sprengel in order to keep up appearances and preserve the reputation of her assumed identity.
Biography[]
Madame Horos' full background isn't known. What is known, however, is that she somehow managed to possess the body of Anna Sprengel, assuming her identity and impersonating her for over a century onwards.
During the Golden Dawn's era, she came into contact with Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers while posing as Anna Sprengel, who was said to have authorized the founding of the Isis-Urania Temple through the Sprengel letters which were held by William Wynn Westcott. After deceiving Mathers, Horos stole the cabal's crucial documents, bringing disaster to the Golden Dawn and earning her Mathers' hatred in the process.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Anna Sprengel's Body: Possessing the body of Anna Sprengel, Madame Horos had a high degree of knowledge and power. However, throughout the years of inhabiting her body, Horos apparently squandered much of Anna's powers. During the time of the Golden Dawn, Mathers' Belzébuth and Typhon-Set were seemingly ineffective in dealing with her. While she claimed to be able to take on Magic Gods such as Nephthys or Niang-Niang, Aiwass remarked on her lack of capability.
- Crystal Ball: Madame Horos could use a transparent, volley ball-sized crystal ball as both a grimoire and a combat module. She lends it to Takitsubo on the pretext that it allows an esper to use magic, but it actually allows her to brainwash her. The ball could also fire beams of light, with aiming assisted by Takitsubo's AIM Stalker.
- Rosicrucian Emblem: Madame Horos could use an all-purpose spiritual item which is able to mass-produce sigils and extract the name of either an angel or spirit by spelling it out in one stroke. Each of the rose's petals has one of the 22 Hebrew letters engraved on them.
Abilities[]
- High Intellect: Madame Horos is very intelligent and cunning, which is only heightened by Anna Sprengel's incredible knowledge. As a professional fraud and swindler, Horos is extremely skilled at deceiving and manipulating people for her own purposes. In the past, she tricked Mathers and stole the Golden Dawn's most crucial documents. She pretends to offer help to Takitsubo, but is actually planning to kill Hamazura while using her.
