Lilith, also known as Madame Satan or by her alias Mary Wardwell, is the secondary antagonist of the 2018 Netflix original series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Known as the "Mother of Demons", Lilith was the first wife of Adam and Satan's most loyal servant and ex-lover. She was also an ex-associate of Father Blackwood and the killer Mary Wardwell (Sabrina's favorite teacher), who assumed her identity to guide Sabrina onto the Path of Night and ensure she signs the Book of the Beast, fulfilling a prophecy that would make Lucifer return to Earth in his true form. After Lucifer's death, she also (briefly) became the new Queen of Hell. She was based on the Archie Comics character Iola / Madam Satan.
As Mary Wardwell, she was portrayed by Michelle Gomez, who also played Missy, the 24th incarnation of The Master, in the 2005 revival of Doctor Who, Morag in The Loud House, Cruella De Vil in 101 Dalmatians Street, and Laura De Mille/Madame Rouge on Doom Patrol. In her teenager form, she was portrayed by Jenna Berman and by Veronica Cartwright when disguised as Mrs. McGarvey.
Personality[]
Madame Satan is a cold, sadistic and deeply determined individual who is extremely loyal to her husband and is completely relentless and guiltless over any action she commits. She's as ancient and powerful than most witches. She is also very clever and cunning, and she a relatively motherly persona which is helpful in making a nurturing and caring façade for her persona. She also has a strong dislike for Father Blackwood and appears to enjoy irritating him although shows at least some respect for him as he does have the closest connection other than herself to the Dark Lord.
She does come to care for Sabrina, who she respected enough to attend her funeral.
Appearance[]
When possessing Wardwell Madame, Satan has the appearance of a striking middle aged woman with thick vibrant auburn hair and pail skin, her clothing usually consists of tight dresses, tights and high heels. In her initial appearance she takes on the form of a physically wrecked and jittery young teenage girl with filthy pale skin, matted greased hair and raggedy clothing.

Origins[]
She began her life before the fall of man. Madame Satan was Adam's first wife Lilith then devoted her life to Satan. She's sensual, alluring and charming as its easy for her to manipulate others to join her side.
Season 1[]
Mary Wardwell was initially a good hearted and eccentric teacher however one faithful night she took in an injured and disoriented girl and offered her shelter and hospitality, this winded up being a grave mistake as the girl turned out to be Madame Satan in disguise and she quickly made work of Wardwell and took on her appearance. She then went around Wardwell's normal work as usual and continuously made attempts to get on Sabrina's good side while simultaneously dropping hints into place for her to go to path of darkness in order to please her husband.
Madame Satan's mission is to corrupt Sabrina to their dark lord's will and uses her position as a teacher to subtly convey her messages to Sabrina and is capable of feats few others are. She would continue to work as Wardwell in disguise while also stalking and talking to Father Blackwood about progress failing on Sabrina's conversion and how it is displeasing the dark lord. After several attempts in the court Blackwood finally gets Sabrina to attend the academy and her visits to Blackwood get less urgent and usually revolve around her attempting to diminish his authority and insult him.
She also uses the demon Batibat to trap Sabrina's family in a nightmare realm, pushing Sabrina further into the witch world. She often conflicts with Zelda Spellman, Sabrina's aunt, and the Weird Sisters, which were unaware of "Wardwell's" true identity.
While she presents herself as the Dark Lord's most loyal servant, Lilith becomes jealous and resentful as Satan begins to treat her like a disposable tool rather than a queen or equal and increasingly favors Sabrina. In the season finale, Lilith manipulates Sabrina to finally signs the Book of the Beast, to save her loved ones and embraces her full witch powers. She also kidnapps and kills/devours Baxter High principal George Hawthorne, and starts plotting against Lucifer by gaining leverage over Sabrina, and hints at her desire to take the throne of Hell for herself.
Season 2[]
She begins to lose track of her persona as the series progresses and begins to show more of her real identity as opposed to her alias of Wardwell. She continues to pose as Sabrina's teacher and mentor, while working to guide her toward fulfilling the Dark Lord's prophecy, which requires Sabrina to embrace her infernal destiny. That prophecy would ultimately allow Lucifer to walk the Earth in his true form and open the Gates of Hell. Lilith becomes a key enabler of Sabrina's "miracle trials", designed to mirror and pervert the miracles of Christ; turning water into wine, resurrection, etc. These events are meant to eventually fulfill the prophecy.
However, Lilith was resentful with Lucifer, because she has served him for millennia and he was using her to raise Sabrina as his new favorite, and might replace her as the Queen of Hell. When Lucifer finally returns to Earth in his true form, he dismisses Lilith's service, humiliates her, and makes clear that Sabrina will be crowned Queen of Hell, not her.
This betrayal pushes Lilith over the edge, so she decides to help Sabrina and her family defeat Lucifer. She helps them activate the Acheron Configuration and binds Lucifer, but he manages to breaks free. Lilith declares only a human vessel can hold him, so Nicholas Scratch volunteers and trap Lucifer in his body, sacrificing his freedom to contain the Dark Lord's power. In exchange for her help, Sabrina allows Lilith to take the throne of Hell for herself. She crowns herself Queen and returns to Hell with Nick/Lucifer in tow, restoring Sabrina's powers and resurrects the real Mary Wardwell as a gift of thanks.
Season 3[]
After helping trap Lucifer in Nick's body, Lilith claims the throne of Hell for herself. However, her position was contested by Prince Caliban, a prince made of clay who declares himself heir and challenges her reign. The Plague Kings also don't respect Lilith, and her power was limited without Lucifer's blessing. Needing Sabrina to legitimize her rule and keep Caliban at bay, Lilith proposes that Sabrina claim the throne of Hell as Queen, with her acting as Sabrina's advisor.
The girl reluctantly agrees to rule temporarily, in order to rescue Nick. So Lilith trains Sabrina in Hell's rituals, royal etiquette, and soul collection. However, Lilith also grows increasingly frustrated as Sabrina becomes rebellious, refusing to follow Hell's rules and challenging the entire "system". She begins to realize that her influence was fading as Sabrina doesn't fear her and Hell's demons don't obey her. When Lucifer escapes his imprisonment and returns to throne, he was furious with Lilith for betraying him and refused to acknowledge her as Queen. He called her a traitor and threatens her with eternal punishment.
Lilith desperately pleads for her life and offers him a peace offering since she was pregnant with his child. She knows birthing Lucifer's heir might protect her or give her leverage, but she was stripped of her authority in Hell by Lucifer and Caliban. So she returned to Earth in disgrace, pregnant and alone, plotting how to reclaim power.

Lilith gives birth in secret to a baby boy. She initially believes this child might restore her influence, either in Hell or through leverage with Lucifer. However, Lucifer had no intention of letting her rise again, and she realizes her child will either be taken from her or used against her. So in a moment of desperation and sorrow, Lilith murders her own son to prevent Lucifer from using him as a pawn.
She eventually acquires the Spear of Longinus, a celestial weapon capable of harming divine and infernal beings alike. In the final episode, she ambushes Lucifer and stabs him twice with the spear, drinking his celestial blood and absorbing his power. She then banishes Lucifer from Hell, stripping him of his throne and condemning him to wander Earth.

Madame Satan powers are quite formidable and make her a dangerous adversary. The powerful concubine of Satan exhibits more extraordinary skills that rival those of Sabrina Spellman. She can shape-shift, perform poppet puppetry, levitate and restore lost powers, as she did with Sabrina. Madame Satan can resurrect, perform all of the spell work that the other witches and warlocks have been able to do. Lilith utilizes scrying to spy on people and even immobilize others, if only temporarily.
- Immortality: Lilith is alive since the dawn of time. She has an infinite lifespan and has the potential to live forever.
- Witchcraft: Lilith is known for being one of the most powerful sorcerers in the world. She has great knowledge about dark and forbidden magic, and has a large arsenal of spells, curses and magical traps.
- Shapeshifting: Lilith can change her physical appearance to make herself look like anyone she desires.
- Telekinesis: As a demon/witch, Lilith can move objects with her mind.
- Dream Walking: Lilith has the ability to enter a person's dreams. She was a able to speak with Sabrina in her dreams while taking on the appearance of Mary Wardwell.
- Necromancy: Lilith possesses the ability to summon and raise the dead. She can resurrect them in their bodies or to raise corpses.
- Vitrikinesis: Lilith can use reflective surfaces as windows to see other people through mirrors.
- Effigy Animation: Lilith has the ability to animate inanimate objects by leaving a psychic imprint on them, also giving her a subconscious link with the object.
- Levitation: She can use her magic powers to levitate.

- High-level intellect/Expert manipulator: As the first witch and first woman in existence, Lilith has centuries of experience. She has displayed great intelligence, and is an expert in manipulation, using her skills to force her opponents to make the exact choices she desired them to make.
