~ Maddie Nolen's last words before she tries to execute Caitlyn.

Maddie Nolen is a supporting antagonist in the second season of Netflix's 2021 animated series Arcane, which is set in the League of Legends universe.

She is a young and optimistic junior officer among Piltover's enforcers, who became a member of the Strike Force assigned to take down the terrorist Jinx. After the mission’s failure, she became the lover of the team’s commander, Caitlyn Kiramann.

However, Maddie is later revealed to have been a spy for Ambessa Medarda and loyal to Noxus, betraying Caitlyn and attempting to execute her before she is stopped and killed by Mel Medarda.

She is voiced by Katy Townsend.

Appearance[]

Maddie is a young adult woman with short reddish-orange hair and freckles, and is fitted into her female enforcers uniform. As part of the strike team and during the battle against Noxus, she wears a gas mask as well. She is also often seen carrying around a pistol as her weapon of choice, which receives Hextech upgrades before the mission in Zaun.

Personality[]

When first introduced, Maddie was shown to be a bright and optimistic young woman who greatly idolized heroes like Vi and Caitlyn. She praised Vi for her deeds and called her one of the "good ones". While she had some experience being an junior officer which led to her being a member of the Strike Force, she was most notably terrified when it came to Jinx's terror tactics, which led to Vi convincing Caitlyn that they should face Jinx while their team goes behind.

However, all of that was revealed to be a facade, and she was actually a cold and ruthless woman, who was a highly loyal agent for Ambessa, willing to follow her orders without question. When she was assigned to execute Caitlyn, she did so without complete hesitation, while coldly telling Caitlyn she enjoyed her warmth.

Despite her true nature as an agent of Ambessa, Maddie did seem to genuinely care for and love Caitlyn. She shows a lot of intimacy towards Caitlyn, and appears to have real concern for her in Caitlyn's moments of stress and anxiety. Although she ultimately betrays her former lover, it is very possible that Maddie's stated affection and appreciation of Caitlyn's warmth did held some truth, but it wasn't enough to stop her killing Caitlyn.

Biography[]

Maddie was first introduced in the first episode of the second season. Alongside her fellow officer, Steb, she introduces herself to a hungover Vi, calling her a legend amongst the enforcers. She reassures Vi that she is glad there are still good ones left, telling her about Caitlyn’s defense of her character at the station. In the Chem-Baron Renni’s attack on the Piltovan council, Maddie displayed her heroics in fighting off Chemtanks and protecting council members. When Caitlyn calls for a strike team to invade Zaun with the main purpose of finding Jinx, Maddie is seen amongst them, brandishing a custom Hextech pistol forged by Jayce Talis.

Together, the strike team scoured through Zaun, using the Grey to smoke out the Chem-Barons Margot and Chross before being led to Jinx’s hideout. With Vi afraid for the team’s safety, Maddie, Loris, and Steb are dismissed from the group to take a prisoner above ground. After Caitlyn returns from the mission, unsuccessful and without Vi, Ambessa Medarda browbeats Caitlyn into becoming the interim leader of a Piltover under martial law, with Maddie leading the charge in encouraging Caitlyn and the other enforcers into backing Ambessa’s recommendation.

After a short timeskip, with Caitlyn continuing her search for Jinx alongside the Noxian army, Maddie begins to have an intimate relationship with her. When Caitlyn expresses doubts and insecurities about her new role and position, Maddie reassures Caitlyn that she can walk away from the invasion and bring back the council, offering her to come back to bed. However, Caitlyn largely rejects both Maddie’s advice and her physical affection, with Maddie appearing disappointed when Caitlyn leaves to investigate an incident at Stillwater Hold caused by an unknown creature. Ambessa appears dismissive of Caitlyn’s relationship with Maddie, warning her of “professional entanglement”, though Caitlyn knows this was not why Ambessa came to speak with her.

After Caitlyn returns, and with war with Ambessa inevitable, Maddie offers her consolation and hope that negotiation with her could be possible, though Caitlyn becomes upset with her as she desperately needs a plan. When Vi arrives asking about Jinx, Maddie is dismissed to check on Caitlyn’s father. In the final battle with Noxus, Maddie is seen among a small unit of Piltovan soldiers, working directly besides Caitlyn for much of the fight. As the group storm Viktor’s location under the cover of the Grey, the explosive set outside Viktor’s orb malfunctions thanks to a small nail that was placed inside. Soon after, Caitlyn is hit on the back of the head by a masked enforcer, and carried away.

When Caitlyn comes to her senses, she is left prone in front of a Noxian army as Ambessa approaches. Behind her is Maddie Nolen with a rifle pointed at her head, as she affirms loyalty to a satisfied Ambessa. Ambessa dismantles Caitlyn’s weapon, reminding her of the dangers of professional entanglement; Caitlyn then tries to shake off Maddie and attack Ambessa, which fails when Ambessa stabs her in the flank. Maddie tells Caitlyn that she did enjoy her warmth right before pulling the trigger, but the bullet is magically bounced several times before hitting his head by Mel Medarda's magic, killing her as she weakly falls onto Caitlyn’s shoulder.
