Mary "Mae" Jane West is a one-time villain from the Fleischer Studios cartoon, Popeye the Sailor Man, only appearing in the episode "Never Kick a Woman". She is a female boxer, who tried to steal Popeye from Olive and she is meant to be a caricature of the celebrity of the same name.
She is voiced by the late Bonnie Poe.
Biography[]
In "Never Kick a Woman", Popeye and Olive went to Sporting Goods and saw Mae West, punching up a punching dummy. There was an advertisement for boxing lessons and Popeye convinced Olive to take them, saying that it was in her best goods to learn self-defense.
Mae West welcomed the duo to the boxing classes and save special attention to Popeye, ogling him seductively and making it clear that she fancied him. She also taunted Olive with a snide remark, angering her into a quick rivalry.
While Olive trained poorly, Mae West would laugh mockingly at her. Popeye joined in and then Mae West came up to him and started touching and rubbing all over him. She caressed his hair and complimented his curls, making Popeye quickly smitten. Olive took notice of this and was soon infuriated with Mae's provocative advances.
Olive got fed up with Mae trying to take her man, so she challenged her to a fight. Olive and Mae got into a boxing match but Mae easily won the fight, punching Olive in the face many times, changing her hairstyle with each knock, and finally, bringing her to the ground.
After defeating Olive, Mae walked off with Popeye but Olive snatched a can of spinach from Popeye's pocket and ate it, giving her the power to fight Mae West. Olive pulverized Mae with a barrage of bunches and punched her into the display window room, where she remained battered and unconscious. Popeye thanked Olive for defeating her and told her that she had learned self-defense after all but Olive still had some unfinished business and gave Popeye a good uppercut as revenge for him cheating on her. Olive closed off the episode by singing her own little victory song.
Appearance[]
Mae West is a caricature of the real Mae West. She is a sexy Caucasian lady with curly blonde hair and beautiful makeup. Unlike the real Mae West, this version of Mae West wears boxing clothes complete with boxing gloves.
Personality[]
Mae West is a tough boxer, who, as Popeye put it, ain't too shabby for "the weaker sex". Mae West is also a pervacious woman who has tried more than one to steal Popeye from Olive and has fought Olive in hand to hand combat just to move in on her man.
