I wouldn't do that if I were you. I know people. I don't want something to happen to you... again.
~ Magda threatening Alba

Magda is the secondary antagonist of The CW's American telenovela Jane The Virgin. She is the manipulative and abusive mother of Petra and Anezka who is seeking to exploit her daughter's marriage to the son of a wealthy hotelier for money. She is portrayed by Priscilla Barnes who also portrayed Vicky Gallegos in Murder, She Wrote.

Biography[]

Introduced as a wheelchair-bound con artist from the Czech Republic, Magda had twin daughters Natalia and Anezka, but could only afford to raise one, so she chose Natalia because she was "prettier," and abandoned Anezka. Magda was shown to be incredibly abusive and controlling to Natalia, and encouraged her to commit criminal acts to make money. Natalia's boyfriend Milos got so fed up with her that he threw acid in her face on one occasion, giving her the burns on the left side of her face.

Convincing her that Milos was actually trying to burn Natalia, the two fled to America where Natalia assumed the false identity of a deceased woman named Petra Andel, with Magda assuming the false surname Andel as well. Under Magda's instruction, Petra entered a golddigging relationship with Rafael Solano for his money, staying in his father's hotel The Marbella where Jane works. The relationship was quite toxic due to Magda's influence, and on one occasion, Petra falsely claimed that he was abusing her with injuries that Magda helped her fake.

When Milos sends his henchman Ivan to Miami to locate Magda and Petra, the duo kidnap him and hold him hostage in their hotel room. When Jane's grandmother Alba discovers the kidnapping, Magda reveals herself to have been faking her handicap and gets out of her wheelchair to throw Alba down a flight of stairs, nearly killing her. Ivan later covers for the kidnapping after Milos buys Petra a third ownership of the Marbella, but when Jane discovers her assault and confronts her, Magda passively threatens to expose Alba's undocumented status to immigration authorities should she report her.

Magda is eventually arrested for the assault anyway when she is turned in by Petra because Rafael tricks her into thinking they have a chance at getting back together and Alba goes on record as a "Jane Doe." Upon learning of the the deception, Petra later manipulates Jane into helping Magda get released from prison early, saying she needs Magda's support for her pregnancy. Not wanting Milos and Ivan to have any leverage over them, Magda and Petra conspire to have Milos arrested for illegally selling grenades out of the Marbella, which they dispose of in the ocean, however one detonates, further disfiguring Magda and causing her to wear an eyepatch and hook hand. Ivan returns to Miami to threaten Magda to retaliate for Milos being arrested, causing Magda to fatally stab him in the neck with her hook hand and forces Petra to help her get rid of the body.

When Rafael convinces Petra to turn Magda in, she learns that Magda already turned her in for the murder, having planted Ivan's blood on one of her kitchen knives and told police that Petra privately confessed to committing the murder. Though Petra is arrested, Rafael defends her and the two get Magda arrested for falsifying evidence, hoping that murder charges follow. Finally free from her mother's influence, Petra reveals to Rafael that Magda had initially planned for Petra to marry Lachlan, but changed for her to marry Rafael because he had more money, but that she actually fell in love with him.

Determined to get revenge, Magda arranges for Anezka to come to Miami to impersonate Petra and steal her shares of the Marbella so that Magda can assume control of the hotel herself. At Magda's bequest, Anezka cleverly drives a wedge between Petra, Jane, and Rafael before poisoning Petra and switching places with her while she is paralyzed. When Magda is re-released from prison, she and Anezka gaslight Luisa to have her committed to a psych ward and take control of her shares as well, making Magda the owner of the Marbella.

When Petra escapes her paralysis and fails to regain control of her shares, she convinces Anezka that Magda is untrustworthy. In response, Magda attempts to have Petra killed by sabotaging the railing on her balcony, however after Anezka threatens Petra's children, she pushes her into the railing, causing Anezka to fall to her death instead. Magda witnesses this from the bathroom and tells the police that Petra killed her sister in cold blood, leading to a lengthy legal struggle in which Petra struggles to prove her innocence.

Fed up with Magda's abuse and schemes, Petra tries to bribe her into leaving, and when this fails, locks her in a supply closet to ensure she can't further sabotage her business deal with Clarissa James. While confined, Magda encounters Alba again, who she threatens. Alba however records her threat and threatens to take it to the police if she doesn't leave. After leaving the closet, Magda accepts a lower bribe, not wanting to be re-arrested, and says she will go to Russia to live with Pyotr, Petra and Anezka's secret triplet brother whose existence she hid. Petra disregards her statement, believing she made Pyotr up to further manipulate her, but in the series finale, Magda is shown in Siberia with Pyotr, who really does exist, and was presumably abandoned alongside Anezka.
