Magnifi Gramarye is the overarching antagonist in the video game Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, being the victim involved in the case where Phoenix Wright would lose his badge for 7 long years. Once a beloved mentor in the art of magic to his son in-law Zak Gramarye and his disciple Valant Gramarye, their relationship turned sour after his two students accidentally shot his daughter Thalassa Gramarye during a rehearsal. Upon the incident, Magnifi would hold his authority over their heads to do his bidding as an act of revenge. For his final act, he would coerce his students to try to kill him on his deathbed in order to stir up an incident. This incident served as the downfall of Troupe Gramarye and numerous lives being ruined in the process, including that of Phoenix Wright, Apollo Justice, Zak Gramarye and his daughter Trucy, Valant Gramarye and even Kristoph Gavin.
Biography[]
Magnifi Gramarye became a successful magician and soon found himself climbing the ladder of fame. Eventually, he formed a Troupe alongside his daughter Thalassa Gramarye called the Troupe Gramarye. His daughter married to a member named Zak Gramarye while Valant Gramarye also joined his troupe. Another member named Roger Retinz also joined his troupe as "Mr. Reus" but Magnifi would soon see him perform dangerous tricks despite being unskilled. One day, Magnifi ordered him not to show up for one of their performances to prevent him from injuring himself. When Mr. Reus refused however, Magnifi ousted him from the troupe.
Magnifi Gramarye's career with his troupe became a great success, gaining fame and becoming rising stars. However, the troupe would soon find tragedy when Zak and Valant accidentally shot bullets that landed on Thalassa's head during their rehearsal. The incident was soon covered up and publicly claimed that Thalassa had gone "missing". However, this did not come without resentment as Magnifi would soon blackmail his two students over the incident, holding the power of being his daughter's father over their heads and forcing them to do whatever he wanted.
Eventually, Magnifi was bedridden with cancer and diabetes. Sensing his chance to cause turmoil between his two students he sent two letters to both of them. The first to Zak and the second to Valant. He ordered them to "shoot one shot square in the forehead" to see if they would shoot him or the clown doll next to him. Their reward for surviving the ordeal would be to inherit Magnifi's performance rights. Zak would arrive first and understood what Magnifi meant, shooting the clown doll on the forehead. Magnifi was impressed by this and gave Zak Gramarye the performance rights before pretending to be asleep again. Valant would soon show up, having his own intentions to kill Magnifi but backed out. When Magnifi saw this, he dropped his sleeping facade and told Valant he failed his task and told him that Zak would receive the performance rights instead. As an angry Valant would walk out, Magnifi would stir things up by shooting himself in the forehead as an act of suicide. His death would lead to a chain reaction of unfortunate circumstances, starting with Valant framing Zak for his death to Kristoph Gavin framing Phoenix Wright for forging evidence in Zak's trial.
Personality[]
Magnifi Gramarye was devoted to his craft as a magician. He was very disciplined in the craft, skilled, and amazed many people with how magnificent his magic was. Magnifi can be strict and stern, to ensure the wellbeing of his staff and to not cause any trouble with his performances. He doesn't hesitate to oust them should they disobey him despite warnings and shows a lot of authority over his students. He's shown to be incredibly resentful after his daughter was critically injured after an accident and holds malice over his students, forcing them to do his will no matter the situation. Despite being depressed over his situation towards the end of his life, he can be cunning and clever, setting things up to cause even more strife between his two disciples.
