~ Magnificus in the finale. |
Magnificus is a major character in Inscryption, the third installment of Daniel Mullin's connecting game series.
Personality[]
Magnificus is outwardly polite, although like Leshy, is similarly easy to anger. Magnificus is a cruel teacher, putting his students through various torturous trials in order to deem them worthy to be immortalized as cards. This is likely however a front for him to obtain the OLD_DATA before any of the other Scrybes can. Magnificus seemingly holds most of his students in low regards, considering the Goo Mage useless when P03's dredger obtains the OLD_DATA before him. It could be assumed however that he is able to rejoice with the Goo Mage by the end of the game, as he keeps a painting made for him by Goobert and talks down on the player for letting him be deleted instead of removing the disk. However, he also whites Goobert out of the painting made for him. What his intentions were while doing this are ambiguous. Magnificus doesn't have the best relationship with Leshy, as the latter stabbed his eye out in fear of Magnificus's ability to see into the future. For this, he highly resents Leshy but whether or not Leshy shares the same resentment is unclear. Despite this however, Magnificus seems to hate P03 even more, calling him the worst Scrybe. Before the deletion, Magnificus seems to at least be on decent terms with Grimora however it's likely he holds a grudge against her after she deletes all the game files. It's unknown what Magnificus's ultimate goal is with the OLD_DATA, but when Rebecha is spoken to about it she claims it is too morbid to reveal albeit speculated.
Biography[]
Act I[]
In Act I, Magnificus has been turned into a talking card by Leshy, taking the identity of the Stunted Wolf. The player is hinted at him after dying enough times to Leshy through quick sequences of him painting in the abyss. The player cant obtain Magnificus by stabbing their eye out with the knife being held by a squirrel carving in the corner of Leshy's cabin. Leshy will offer the player a new eye. There's a chance of one of the eyes being Magnificus's eye, which lets the player see signs all throughout the cabin hinting at how to obtain Magnificus. Once the player does obtain him, they'll also be able to obtain Leshy's film roll. Magnificus is overall polite to the player, helping them throughout the Act up until the player inscrybes Leshy and resets the game.
Act II[]
Magnificus, along with Leshy and Grimora are the central antagonists of Act II. Each being bosses the player needs to fight along with P03. Though they can be fought in any order, Magnificus will never be the first scrybe the player fights and is usually the third, second, or even last boss of the Act due to Rebecha fixing the bridge. Once asked on each Scrybe's intentions, Rebecha will speculate, but claim that Magnificus's desires are too awful to even speak of. The player gets to see Magnificus's mistreatment of his pupils, but can't do anything about it. He even shows disgust for them despite their unconditional respect for him. Before the player speaks to Magnificus, a letter can be read on his table addressing Grimora but it is unfinished. When Magnificus meets with the player, he tries to warn them of the game but battles them nonetheless. Once he is defeated, he'll try to warn the player of P03 before being interrupted and mysteriously glitch out of the game. If the player tries to replace him, he'll scold them and P03 who promptly removes him from the scene using the OLD_DATA before using it to take over the game. Magnificus presumably escapes with the other Scrybes on Leshy's boat.
Act III[]
Magnificus can be found with the other Scrybes after the third boss of Botopia is defeated. He has come to a truce with Leshy and Grimora, as they plot with the player to kill P03. When P03 begins uploading Inscryption to the internet after the final boss of Botopia is defeated, Leshy will twist his head off as the other Scrybes enter the scene. Grimora is given the hard drive so that she could bring the game back to normal, but she instead deletes it much to Magnificus and Leshy's dismay. As the two panic, the finale begins.
Finale[]
Magnificus is the final boss of the game, however the player cannot lose against him. He is a formidable opponent nonetheless as he challenges Luke to a card battle while guilting the player to shutdown the game. This however fails, as while Magnificus continuously tries to evade his demise, he inevitably cannot hold out any longer and weakly tries to shake the players hand, but is deleted before he can do so; being the only Scrybe in the finale that doesn't shake the player's hand. Magnificus's foresight proves right in the end, as Luke Carder witnesses the OLD_DATA and is later shot dead by Amanda.
