Leave us, slayer of Demons. This is a sanctuary for the lost and wretched. There is nothing here for you to pillage or plunder. Please, leave quietly.
~ Maiden Astraea

Maiden Astraea is the secondary antagonist of the 2009 action role-playing game Demon's Souls and its 2020 remake of the same name.

She is the sole Archdemon to have dialogue, and the sole Archdemon whose battle centers around her protector, Garl Vinland, rather than herself, although she still possesses healing abilities and the God's Wrath miracle to be of some defense.

She was voiced by Clare Corbett.

Appearance[]

Astraea wears a white head covering with similarly bright robes and a long skirt, the last of which is heavily blood stained on the bottom. She has blonde hair and a youthful face, a stark contrast from the either aged or beastly appearance of the other four Archdemons.

Biography[]

Maiden Astraea was the Sixth Saint of the Church, who was sent on a pilgrimage to the Valley of Defilement to heal those who suffered there. When the Colorless Fog came to the valley, Astraea became an Archdemon and sought to use her powers for good by giving the diseased inhabitants a sanctuary to call home.

Maiden Astraea as a character and boss is able to be encountered immediately after the defeat of the Dirty Colossus, although she is spoken of earlier by such NPCs as the Monumental and (in a disgusted and envious manner) the Filthy Woman. Immediately upon entry to her arena, a cutscene triggers showing her seated at the bottom of a plague-infested swamp, where her guardian Garl Vinland prepares himself to ward off the Slayer of Demons' pursuit for her demon soul. Multiple common enemies from earlier in the Valley of Defilement can be attacked by the Slayer of Demons, but in this arena, acting extremely passive. Astraea urges the player to leave immediately, and she and Vinland alike reveal in their dialogue their thoughts on how God had abandoned them, the suffering permitted by said God bringing Astraea to seek the power of the demon soul for healing purposes.

If Astraea is reached without killing Vinland first, she will use the God's Wrath miracle to damage the player if she is attacked. However, if Vinland is killed first, he notes his failure of protecting Astraea with a deeply regretful tone. Astraea will then simply surrender her Demon Soul to the player as she can no longer resist them, killing herself in the process.

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Magic
    • Healing: Among her healing abilities was "Relief," a magic spell that instantly healed any physical wounds or ailments sustained by an ally by making physical contact with them.
    • Disease Generation: Having been corrupted from her lengthy stay in the Valley of Defilement, Astraea was able to use a magic spell called "Death Cloud." When used, Death Cloud dispersed purple mist that inflicted deadly, fast acting, plagues upon those that came into contact with it.
    • Force Generation: Astraea could use a miracle called "God's Wrath," which allowed her to conjure a powerful concussive shockwave around herself to ward off incoming attackers.

Trivia[]

  • Astraea's soul, the Pureblood Demon Soul, can be consumed for 48,000 souls, used to ascend a Broken Sword to the Blueblood Sword with Blacksmith Ed, or traded to Sage Freke for the Death Cloud spell (a spell that inflicts Plague status), Yuria the Witch for the Relief spell, or Saint Urbain for the Resurrection miracle.
