~ The Maintenance Man while trying to rape Ellen - his most famous quote. |
The Maintenance Man is a minor antagonist in the 1995 horror video game I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, based on the 1967 short story of same name by the late Harlan Ellisson.
As his nickname suggests, he was a maintenance worker at INGSAI who was actually a serial rapist who takes pleasure in sexually abusing any woman he finds in his path. He's also responsible for Ellen's claustrophobia and aversion to the yellow color, a trauma which AM takes delight in exploiting.
He was voiced by Skip Towne.
Biography[]
Little is known about the Maintenance Man's past. All what is known about him is that at some point, he took a job as a maintenance worker at INGSAI so he could prey on women and started to rape them when he had a chance, staking up twenty victims. Sometime after Ellen went to work there, he chose her as his next victim. One night while she was working, the Maintenance Man locked down her elevator and proceeded to violently and repeatedly rape her over the course of the next few hours. At some point, his crimes were finally exposed, but the events were so terrifying to Ellen, that she didn't have the courage to testify against him during his trial along with his other victims. Some time after his arrest, he was killed along with most of humanity when AM launched his strike.
This event caused Ellen to develop acute claustrophobia and an extreme fear to the yellow color, something that AM took great pleasure in tormenting her with by designing her cell after a yellow oubliette that was constantly on the verge of shutting and leaving her trapped inside but never quite shutting all the way.
During her scenario in AM's game, Ellen found herself locked in a recreation of the elevator where she was raped; after accessing the biography provided for her, she was confronted by a recreation of the rapist himself, having been "brought back" just so he could repeat his performance on her. However, Ellen decided to resist her own fears and was able to easily overwhelm and overpower the rapist, causing his body to crumble into nothingness as he originally was. By doing so, Ellen was finally able to move on with her mind freed from the worst of her neurosis.
Personality[]
Little is known about the Maintenance Man's personality because of his small screen time. What was shown and said about him, however, describes what he trully is: a creul and sadistic rapist who takes great delight in dominating women in positions of authority. He's so vile and perverted, that Ellen wasn't capable of standing up to him until she partook in AM's game 109 years later, in addition to causing her to develop a tremendous aversion to the yellow color and claustrophobia.
