Dr. Reed Nathaniel Richards, also known as the Maker and formerly Mr. Fantastic, is one of the main antagonists of the Marvel Universe, serving as one of the main antagonists of the Ultimate Marvel continuity and later the main antagonist of the 2023 Ultimate Marvel universe.
While originally the leader of the Fantastic Four before their seperation, unlike most of his counterparts from different universes, this version of Mr. Fantastic is an idealist who ends up making a deal with an alien empire to attack and conquer the Earth in order to improve what he sees as a flawed species. He has his entire family killed (including his baby siblings) so that he can fake his death and avoid suspicion.
He later leads an advanced society of superhumans called the Children of Tomorrow. Under his rule, the Children of Tomorrow absorb entire cities into their base, wipe out most of the Asgardian gods, and completely destroy Washington. Throughout all this, Reed is fully aware of what he is doing, and feels no remorse for exterminating a species that he perceives as inferior. He is the archenemy of the Ultimates and his former teammates the Fantastic Four.
Twenty-nine years ago, Gary Richards and his wife gave birth to their first child, a son named Reed. Almost immediately, the Richards suspected that there was something special about Reed, who displayed his curiosity from the day he was born. As a child, he demonstrated remarkable and magnificent intelligence, well ahead of that of his peers. While other children engaged in sports or played games, Reed devoted himself to the sciences. His father often found him cannibalizing household appliances in an effort to create something never before seen by man, an act that often earned him his father's ire. He would later grow up with Ben Grimm, Sue Storm, and Johnny Storm.
Reed and his team of scientist's attempted to teleport organic material via the N-Zone, with Sue assisting and Johnny and Ben observing. However, Victor Van Damme secretly altered the teleporter's coordinates, causing the four to be engulfed in the parallel dimension. This accident granted them superpowers—Reed gained elasticity and enhanced durability. As the Fantastic Four, they battled various threats while investigating their abilities and seeking a cure for Reed and Ben.
Following the Ultimatum event, which killed many heroes, Reed proposed to Sue, but she rejected him, leading to the team's dissolution. His worldview darkened and he began to descend into villainy, later orchestrating his own family's murder, aligning with alien invaders. Branded a global threat, he was confronted by former allies, including Spider-Man and the Ultimates who defeated and banished him to the N-Zone.
Reed survived this battle and renamed himself "the Maker", with his new goal being to find a new world to improve, having grown disillusioned with his own. The Maker began to lead the superhuman Children of Tomorrow after spending a millennium in the future. He battled the Ultimates, assembled the Infinity Gauntlet, and was instrumental in stopping Galactus. During Secret Wars, he sided with the Cabal, opposing Doctor Doom but was ultimately defeated when Molecule Man split his body into pieces across the multiverse.
Despite this, the Maker survived, existing across multiple realities. On Prime Earth, he led the science-terrorist group W.H.I.S.P.E.R. and formed a new Revengers team to battle the New Avengers. During Civil War II, he manipulated events but was eventually captured. Later, he worked with Project Oversight, investigating Venom and symbiote-related mysteries before bonding with the Venom symbiote from Earth-1610 and ending up in the Ultimate Universe.
After Knull’s defeat, Eddie Brock warned that the Maker was plotting an invasion of the main Marvel Universe. In Ultimate Invasion, he escaped prison, manipulated Miles Morales, and reshaped history, creating Earth-6160—a world under his rule. He sabotaged the Fantastic Four’s origin, turned that world’s Reed into Doom, and manipulated global politics. Despite his control, resistance grew, led by Iron Lad, Captain America, and Thor. As his ambitions escalated, Howard Stark rebelled, trapping the Maker inside The City for two years. With his Council struggling in his absence, the Ultimates prepared for his return, while the Guardians of the Galaxy warned that his victory was nearly inevitable.

Pliable Bacterial Stacks: Reed's cells have been replaced with "pliable bacterial stacks," single cells which duplicate most of the larger functions of the human body. This allows Reed to stretch his body in myriad ways without disrupting the necessary functions of internal organs such as the kidneys, lungs, or even brain. Reed can stretch any or all of his body parts long distances, even assuming non-human shapes such as a sphere or parachute. Sue's mother revealed that she knows that Reed's abilities allow him to stretch his brain in order to accommodate and solve almost any problem, thus making him effectively a human computer. Reed's altered biology also prevents cellular decay, allowing him to spend one thousand years inside the Dome while showing no signs of physical aging.
