| “ | There is only one side. The side of the angels. Valentine is only doing what the Clave has been trying to accomplish for centuries: eradicate demons. When Raziel created the first Shadowhunter, there was no such thing as Downworlders. But over the centuries, disgusting half-breeds emerged. Warlocks, vampires, Seelies, werewolves. They banded together, grew more powerful. Finally they will be destroyed. And so will you. | „ |
| ~ Malachi explaining his allegiance to Valentine and his plans to eradicate Downworlders and demons alike |
Malachi Dieudonné is one of the three secondary antagonists (alongside Victor Aldertree and Jonathan Morgenstern) in Season 2 and an overarching antagonist in Season 3 of the Freeform TV series Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments.
He was a Shadowhunter who, as a member of the Circle, secretly served its rogue and murderous leader, Valentine Morgenstern and planned to "annihilate" the Clave.
He was portrayed by Andreas Apergis.
Biography[]
Beginnings[]
At one point, Malachi designed and created the Malachi Configuration: a strong cage that is able to trap and contain Greater Demons. However, the Configuration was never approved for field use and was stored in the Armory in Alicante under lock and key.
Foiled transfer[]
Malachi was the Consul of the Clave at the time of Valentine's arrest. He was at Idris with the Clave council waiting for Valentine to be transferred to the Gard at Alicante as requested by Alec Lightwood, the current head of the New York Institute. When the Shadowhunters in charge arrived, however, Valentine was nowhere to be seen. Malachi was infuriated to realize that Valentine had managed to escape imprisonment. It turns out that the transfer went awry due to the interference of Jonathan Morgenstern, Valentine's son, who had blackmailed another Shadowhunter (by threatening to harm his family if he refused to cooperate, although Jonathan ended up killing him when he refused to fulfill his part of the deal) into having him transferred to a cabin in Idris to send him to Edom out of anger for doing the same thing to him, although Valentine eased Jonathan up and convinced him to join forces.
Mortal Mirror discovery[]
Later on, when Clary Fairchild discovered that Lake Lyn was the true Mortal Mirror, she informed the Inquisitor Imogen Herondale, who then shared this pivotal piece of information to Malachi. Moments later, Valentine confesses to Jonathan that a spy of his, a mole inside the Clave, had relayed said information to him. Since Malachi was the only one who knew about the Mortal Mirror's true origins, besides Imogen herself, this correctly signifies Malachi's allegiance to Valentine, thus foreshadowing his true colors.
Deception exposed and death[]
Malachi is seen waiting for Clary Fairchild and Jace Herondale, expecting them to try and "foil" Valentine's plans. They introduced themselves to Malachi and told him about Valentine's plans to use the Mortal Instruments in order to raise the Angel Raziel for him to wish for the deaths of all Downworlders alike and that they need to get to Lake Lyn before he does. However, Malachi refuses and reveals himself as a Circle member, ordering his men to have them restrained. Asking about his ulterior motives, Jace tells Clary that Valentine had previously threatened to kill Shadowhunters who dared oppose him, so Malachi was forced to join him to save his own skin. Malachi then explained to Clary and Jace his plans to eradicate Downworlders for good. As Jace and Clary were about to be executed, Malachi assured that Valentine would understand that their deaths were a "necessary sacrifice". Angered and almost crying, Clary questioned how Malachi, as Consul of the Clave, could allow such cruelty to happen, to which he reacted unsympathetically to this and furiously replied "How could I not?!" before ordering his men to kill both of them. When all hope seemed to be lost, however, Jace was able to break free and stabbed Malachi, who fell to the ground mortally wounded. Jace and Clary battle and kill all of Malachi's minions. As a final act of revenge, Jace then turns to Malachi, who cowardly begs for his life, and stabs the blade deeper through his heart, finally killing the treacherous Consul for good and ending his attempted coup on the Clave.
Legacy[]
Shortly after Malachi's death, Jia Penhallow was appointed as the new Consul of the Clave. However, Malachi's attempted coup d'etat had such a negative impact on the New York Institute that it had prompted the Clave to reopen investigations on all former Circle members, which included the recently divorced Maryse and Robert Lightwood. Due to her past actions with Valentine and the Circle, the Clave had declared Maryse a traitor and was de-runed, much to Alec's disappointment and resulting in her becoming a mundane. In Robert's case, on the other hand, he had accepted a plea deal, which consisted of him being reassigned to the Los Angeles Institute and took Max, his younger son, with him.
After The Owl was revealed to be Jace, Clary confessed to having used Raziel's wish to Alec, Isabelle and Magnus as it was the only way to bring him back to life, but that it made him vulnerable to demonic influence as a consequence. Surprised but sympathetic at Clary's good intetions, Alec hugs her, telling her that he would've done the same thing in her place. Knowing that the Clave would refuse them any access to the Malachi Configuration (its abilities seen in Malachi's background shown above), the three went to Imogen, Jace's biological paternal grandmother, so that she could help them obtain it in order to find him before the Clave got to him first, with Alec staying behind to distract Jia when she walked past them. They corner Jace at the Cemetery of the Disgraced, where he was digging Valentine's grave Lilith's orders and manage to trap him. Clary transports the three of them back to Magnus's place as she stayed behind to turn herself in to the Clave and buy them enough time. However, as Alec and Isabelle attempted to free Jace from the Owl's control, they were knocked unconscious by Lilith who had arrived looking for him, resulting in her overpowering Magnus and taking Jace with her.
After Clary was sentenced to death by Consul Penhallow for using the Angel Raziel's one and only wish out of personal gain, Charles Freeman, one of the criminals, was deemed guilty for both his affiliation with Malachi and killing twelve Clave soldiers. When asked if he had any last words by Jia, he answered "Long live the Circle", leading many of Valentine's followers to madly cheer for him out of loyalty. Freeman was then burned to the death on the stake, screaming in great pain as his entire body is fried. Only Freeman's skeleton is what remains of him and is disposed of by the Silent Brothers.
