It's your own fault, Uncle. You wouldn't trust me, would you? Tried to cheat me out of what was mine by right.
~ Malic while torturing his uncle to death.

Malic is the main antagonist of the 1976 series Space 1999.

He is the Dorcon prince who craves his father's immeasurable power and will do anything in order to achieve it. Therefore, when a Psychon brain is the power to get immortality, this provides a chance for a staged coup.

He is portrayed by the late Gerry Sundquist.

Biography[]

Once the Dorcon probe had finally found a ripe Psychon that suited the needs of the empire, the royal family was notified of this discovery. Initially Malic and Archon, his uncle, had decided on a full out attack on Alpha. Therefore, the harborers of the Psychon would perish and the target Maya would be theirs. Then the wise Varda realizes that Maya could also die, and their quest would be in vain. Therefore, Malic's plan of ascending is delayed as his uncle can easily become immortal.

As a Psychon's brain carry the path to immortality and through history Dorcons have hunted for them. Although due to past events, Archon needs Maya immediately. Once peaceful negotiations cease to work Malic argues that they must be more aggressive to which now Archon sees as the only choice. The power of the Dorcons sees Malic facing his uncle now obtaining immortality from a captured Maya.

Seeing his opportunity, he attempts to manipulate Varda into letting Archon die so he may grab power and rule. As Malic's madness would lead the Dorcons to imminent collapse. He is now prevented from interacting with the Archon as a result. Malic's next move is to execute his own men out of pragmatism to find a shocked Koenig. The latter was going to escape his imprisonment, now going free but with an alarm being raised by Malic.

Using this chaos, he diverts the empire's attention from Maya and Archon to Koenig who he had incriminated for the murders. Therefore, allowing him to encounter his uncle unattended and shoot the medical personnel. Then he psychopathically tortures his uncle to death while the Archon can only watch in horror. This ends up with the Archon's brain completely frying up. With utmost sadism he relishes in becoming the new Archon and hopes to claim Maya for himself.

Removing his uncle's badge, he orders Koenig's execution and Maya's capture at once given his newfound power. Varda is at first furious but the mutiny from Malic soon dawns to her. Albeit it is too late as the sadistic teenager kills her himself but not before damaging the converter. Therefore, the ship was ripped apart taking the now insane and delusional Malic with it.

Personality[]

Course, I shall keep the Psychon for myself. Well, immortality is wasted on the old. Isn't it?
~ Malic's mania

Malic is by far one of the vilest villains from the show's second season if not the entire program. He was willing to sacrifice his own people without even a tinge of remorse if it meant he would come to power. Not to mention he used Koenig to then essentially kill his uncle through incredulous torture that he completely enjoyed. Even mocking him after killing him and taking the throne. Overall, this differed from most villains who for the most part respected their fellow companions, and he would do this to anyone if it benefited him.

Additionally, seen by his death he had an enormous ego and self-esteem most likely coming from his aristocratic heritage. Believing that everything was inherently his and that everyone should obey him no matter the cost. Displayed when he thought he could enslave the controller to save himself from destruction. Dying in his own creation of madness. Proving that Varda was right about him.

Appearance[]

He wore aristocratic clothing of which was a green robe and embroideries very much like other aristocrats from the show.

Trivia[]

  • He stands out as a villain who has an on screen kill count, as other villains didn't kill on screen at all, were implied to have killed many people, or attempted to destroy Alpha which was pretty much standard for the show.
  • He is similar to Great Professor Bias as they were both elitists who believed they could control everything and wanted to have total domination as well as seek immortality though Bias had already gained it through similar means.
