Malik Star Trek

Malik is the main antagonist of the Augments trilogy from the fourth season of Star Trek: Enterprise, making his debut in "Borderland".

He was portrayed by Alec Newman, who voiced Adam Smasher in Cyberpunk, Jack the Ripper in Assassin's Creed and Lahabrea in Final Fantasy XIV. As a child, he was portrayed by Jordan Orr.

Biography[]

Malik was one of the Augments, genetically engineered humans created during the Eugenics Wars. He was one of a number kept in cryogenic storage aboard Cold Station 12. He and several others were stolen from the station by the director, Arik Soong, who opposed Earth's ban on genetic engineering. He took them to the Trialus system where he raised them as his children. They were left to fend for themselves when Soong was captured and imprisoned.

Malik disagreed with their leader Raakin, who was content to hide away on Trialus. He and a comrade, Saul, faked a shuttle accident to lure in a Klingon Bird of Prey, then killed the entire crew and took it over. Raakin disciplined Malik for disobeying him and intended to use the ship to settle on another planet. Malik persuaded the rest of the crew to follow him and killed Raakin. He took Raakin's lover Persis as his own consort.

After picking up a signal from Soong, Malik took the Bird of Prey to track down Enterprise, where Soong was a prisoner. He fought off an Orion ship that was attacking them, and was brought aboard. Captain Archer warned him the Klingons were threatening war as a result of his attack on their ship. Malik dismissed the fact and casually took Archer hostage, using him to get off the ship while Persis also liberated Soong.

Soong took charge and decided to head back to Cold Station 12 to retrieve the remaining embryos. He refused to kill anyone however, frustrating Malik who wanted to destroy their life support. He questioned Malik about Raakin. Malik told him he'd killed him by accident in self-defence. Malik, Soong and a number of other Augments took over first a supply shuttle and then the station. The new director, Jeremy Lucas, claimed he didn't have access to the cold store and Soong believed him but Malik realised he was lying. He first tried to torture the information out of Lucas, then placed the deputy director in a chamber and exposed him to a number of fatal diseases. When Lucas still refused to talk, Soong tried to deliver an antidote but Malik delayed him and the man died.

A boarding party from Enterprise was captured, among them Smike, one of the Augments who had been banished after being deemed inferior. On realising Doctor Phlox was a friend of Lucas, Malik threatened him and Lucas gave in and opened the cold store. While Soong retrieved the embryos, Malik secretly had a number of deadly pathogens loaded aboard their shuttle. He then programmed the station's forcefields to shut down after they left, intending the station crew and the party from Enterprise to be killed when the diseases were released, and killed Smike to spare him such a painful death. He and the rest of the Augments returned to their ship by shuttle and evaded Enterprise.

Malik was disgusted Soong intended to hide in an area known as the Briar Patch, talking of how Khan Noonien Singh made the mistake of running from his enemies and was never heard of again. When Enterprise again tracked them, Soong refused to destroy them, instead stranding the pilot of the supply shuttle in a pod that would be crushed inside a gas giant if Enterprise didn't stop and rescue her. Malik was horrified that Soong was altering the embryos to make them less violent and aggressive, and proposed firing the pathogens at the Klingon Qu'Vat colony, thus triggering the war between humans and Klingons to keep Starfleet occupied. When Soong refused, Malik again convinced the rest of the crew to follow him and took command, locking Soong in his quarters. Persis helped Soong get off the ship and Malik killed her.

As Malik prepared to massacre the Qu'Vat colony, Enterprise arrived, having been summoned by Soong. A battle left Malik's ship crippled. Malik activated the self-destruct, killing his remaining followers and the embryos, but beamed himself to Enterprise where he tried to kill Soong. He was killed by Archer, who blasted a hole in his stomach with a phase rifle.
