Villain Overview

Please don't do anything as foolish as to look for revenge. Revenge only breeds further revenge. If you, Mr. Naofumi, could bear to show mercy, then I'm sure the queen would be grateful.
~ Malty begging for Naofumi's forgiveness (only to be refused).

Former Princess Malty S. Melromarc, later known by the title of "Bitch" and formerly known as Myne Sophia, is the main antagonist of The Rising of the Shield Hero franchise.

She is the former first Princess of the Kingdom of Melromarc, the daughter of Aultracy and Mirelia, elder sister of Melty Q, and the archenemy of the series protagonist, Naofumi Iwatani.

An unrepentant and manipulative psychopath, Malty is responsible for almost all of Naofumi's suffering and problems. When the Cardinal Heroes were first summoned, she originally pretended to join the Shield Hero's party as a gesture of "kindness." Later that night however, Malty would reveal her true colours when she betrayed Naofumi. She stole all of his possessions and then falsely accused him of raping her. Naofumi was subsequently treated like a pariah, until Malty's lies were finally exposed several months later.

Despite losing both her power and status, Malty refused to learn her lesson. Denying any responsibility for her own downfall and wanting revenge upon the people that had "wronged her," the fallen Princess joined the world jumping terrorist organisation known as the Vanguard of the Waves. Since then, Malty Melromarc has traveled across the various worlds, sowing endless destruction in her wake, whilst relishing in the suffering of her numerous victims.

Outside of the light novels, Malty is also present in the series original (now non-canon) web novel, manga and anime adaptations. In each iteration, her role remains the same, wherein she is both the Shield Hero's treacherous first companion and his foremost enemy. For the anime, Malty is voiced by Sarah Emi Bridcutt in the original Japanese version. Bridcutt who reprise her role in the series' 2020 stage play adaptation. Faye Mata (who also voiced Yumemi Yumemite in Kakegurui and the Glam Twins in Helluva Boss, and Yukako Yamagishi from Jojo's Bizarre Adventures: Diamond is Unbreakable, and the OVA adaption of Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe in the dub) would voice Malty in the English dub.

Titles and Alias'[]

As the first born child of Queen Mirellia Q. Melromarc and her husband, King Aultcray Melromarc XXXII, Malty held a number of distinguished titles, befitting of her royal status. She also used a fake name, when travelling throughout Melromarc as an adventurer. As such, Malty's known titles included:

Table of Malty Melromarc's known title's
Title Description
The First Princess of Melromarc Granted at birth due to being the oldest of Queen Mirellia and King Aultcray's daughters. Malty was stripped of this title, along with her royal status at the end of her trial in Volume 4.
The Crown Princess of Melromarc She was originally intended to be. However, due to Malty's atrocious behaviour, Queen Mirellia chose to appoint her youngest daughter Melty the Crown Princess of Melromarc instead.
The Future Queen of Melromarc Malty frequently refers to herself by this title, even after the loss of her royal status.
Myne Sophia The alias that Malty used to hide her true identity whilst operating within Naofumi and Motoyasu's adventure parties.
Bitch As part of Malty's punishment at the conclusion of her trial, Naofumi, with the full backing of the Queen, had the former Princesses' legal name changed from Malty to Bitch.
Whore As part of the aforementioned punishment, Naofumi also requested that Malty's adventurer's name be changed from Myne Sophia to Whore, which was also granted.
Witch The third and final derogatory title, granted to Malty, this time by her mother in Volume 11. This was done not only to signify to the world that Malty was now a wanted criminal but as payback for the former Princess' manipulation and subsequent betrayal of the Sword and Bow Heroes.

Appearance[]

Malty looks like a younger version of her mother, Queen Mirellia Q. Melromarc and is also said to bear a striking resemblance to her late paternal aunt Lucia. Many people have commented on her beauty, including Naofumi himself, although the Shield Hero later wrote her off as a waste of beauty. The former princess herself knows that she is good looking and has learnt to exploit this factor to her advantage (see the Personality section).

Taller than Ren, Itsuki and Raphtalia but shorter than Naofumi and Motoyasu, Malty's eyes are rich emerald green eyes, whilst her chest-length wavy hair is rose-red. Although tied up in a small ponytail at the back, Malty generally lets her hair hang in several loose strands held in place by a golden headband. Befitting of her title as a princess, Malty always tries to maintain a well-kept appearance. Between Volumes 1 - 4, she dressed in the finest armour and clothes available.

Her main attire was a set of silver armour with purple linings and dark under-armour. A red jewel surrounded by gold rested at the centre of the breastplate. Although Malty kept this armour following her fall from grace, the rest of her luxurious dresses and jewellery were confiscated. Much to her chagrin, she was forced to wear simple peasant garments.

Personality[]

Malty Melromarc may have inherited her mother's good looks but the story makes it very clear that is all she inherited. Beneath her superficial beauty and pretentious kindness, Malty is a devious psychopath, who embodies all of humanity's worst traits. According to both her mother and sister, Malty exhibited these sadistic traits from an early age and has never shown any remorse for her actions.

Although Malty considers herself to be both virtuous and faultless, the only things she truly cares about are herself, money and power. An elitist snob and spoiled brat, Malty aims to become the next Queen of Melromarc and be remembered as a great hero. Ultimately, however, she possesses neither the temperament nor tenacity to accomplish either goal. Content to let others do all the work whilst reaping the rewards, Malty is repeatedly shown to be a narcissistic, lazy, opportunistic, selfish, pompous, absent-minded and cowardly sycophant. She is also hypocritical, insatiably greedy, condescending and treacherous. To her, deception, manipulation and insults come as easy as breathing. At the same time, valiant concepts like love, compassion, solidarity and friendship are incomprehensible.

Due to her psychopathic nature, Malty is incapable of forming genuine attachments. To her, everybody else is just a puppet in her grand schemes for power and dominance. Utilising her good looks and charm, Malty will manipulate others to do her bidding. However, should a better opportunity present itself, she will not hesitate to betray her former allies, laying all of the blame upon them and never owning up to her villainy.

Malty is also not as intelligent as she believes herself to be. Short-sighted, lazy and lacking common sense, Malty is not only oblivious to certain details about her own country (which her people consider common knowledge) but her inability to adapt makes her actions extremely transparent and somewhat predictable.

Without a doubt, however, Malty’s biggest weakness is her incorrigible nature. Despite being given countless opportunities, she has never changed her strategies, attempted to fix her flaws or redeem herself in any shape or form. Even when irrefutable evidence of her guilt/villainy is presented, Malty will continue to play innocent though, if necessary, she will hypocritically plead for mercy, something she has never shown.

These factors ultimately proved to be Malty Melromarc's undoing. By the end of Volume 16, (see the Synopsis section for spoilers), Malty’s words, actions, callous schemes and baseless cruelty made everybody, including her own family realise that she wasn’t anywhere near as kind or victimised as she claimed. Eventually, the people of her world saw the former Princess for what she was: a selfish, loathsome deceiver and a vile traitor. Ultimately, Malty ended up being branded a criminal, and abandoned by virtually everybody who knew her, save for the equally corrupt and decadent, who (except for Lesty) barely tolerated her presence.

Skills and Abilities[]

Malty is quite an accomplished actress. In the early stages of the story, she manipulated several otherwise good people such as her father, the three heroes and to a lesser extent the citizens of Melromarc to get what she wanted. Usually, this revolved around money or some other form of material possession. However, Malty has also used her manipulations to make life difficult for other people. Her main victim was Naofumi, but she later did this to Motoyasu, Ren and Itsuki.

However, Malty's acting skills only go so far and as the series progressed, it became less and less effective. Observant individuals such as Naofumi, were able to see through Malty as her body language did not necessarily match what she was saying. For instance, when feigning despair, the Shield Hero noticed that she never once shed a single tear. Others, like Pope Balmus, had their own twisted schemes at work and thus never once fell for her sob stories. Last but not least, some people, including Malty's own family (except for Aultcray initially) knew better than to trust her. As time went by, more and more people began to recognize Malty for the chronic backstabber and a perpetually compulsive liar that she well and truly was. Eventually, most people stopped listening to her, knowing that they could not believe a single word that came out of her mouth.

Although she carries a sword into battle, Malty rarely uses it. Since her typical strategy revolves around letting others do the fighting for her, she is not especially strong in combat. To make up for this, Malty uses magic to either enhance her allies abilities or, if necessary, catch her opponents off guard with a sneak attack. Malty specializes in fire-type magic, but is also quite adept at wind-type magic. She has been seen using the following spells:-

List of the known spells employed by Malty S. Melromarc
Spell Description
Wind Blow Launches a transparent fist of air at the target. This spell can only be seen if you are directly looking for it.
Zweite Fire A spell that creates a ball of fire.
Drifa Hellfire Summons balls of fire which fly towards the target at high speed. When Malty used the Vassal Axe, she was able to use Drifa Hellfire IV.
Zweite Power A buffer spell that increases the strength and speed of the target.
Zweite Fire Arrow Information to be added.

Despite all these abilities, Malty has a very poor combat record. With the exception of the Second Wave of Calamity, the villainess has lost every single engagement that she has fought in. When facing powerful opponents like Naofumi and his allies, she is hopelessly outmatched, despite having a level advantage. Her only accomplishment thus far, are not being captured following her escape or killed (at least not completely).

Relationships[]

Family[]

Aultcray Melromarc XXXII[]

During Malty's early life, Aultcray was a doting parent. Due to his overprotective personality and her looking like his deceased sister, Lucia, Aultcray spoiled Myne rotten. Whenever she got into trouble, he would always intervene on her behalf, protecting her from any harm. Many people later attributed this to Malty's reprehensible behavior later in life.

In time, Malty learned to take advantage of her fathers affection, manipulating him for her own benefit. When the Cardinal Heroes were summoned, Malty, who knew of her fathers hatred for the Shield Hero, convinced him to help her frame Naofumi. Afterwards, the King gave preferential treatment and blatant favoritism to the Spear Hero, since Malty was in his party.

Their relationship changed forever however, when Malty helped and encouraged her ally Takt to kill her own mother, Queen Mirellia. Witnessing her pleasure at Mirellia and later Takt's deaths, Aultcray finally saw his daughter for the monster that she really was. He initially went into shock, deeply traumatized by the loss of his wife and the role his favorite daughter played in it. With a bit of help from his former enemy Naofumi however, Aultcray overcame the trauma. Although it caused him great pain, he ordered Malty's execution, for the sake of his country and his remaining daughter Melty. Malty managed to escape custody before her punishment could be carried out, but is now on her fathers wanted list.

Mirellia Q Melromarc[]

Malty is nowhere near as close to her mother as she is to her father. Unlike Aultcray, Queen Mirellia recognized her daughters vile nature straightaway, trying everything within her power to correct the deplorable behavior of her first born. Although she would continue to love her, Mirellia eventually concluded that Malty was unfit to be Queen and removed her from the succession of the matriarchy, hoping that this would teach her some humility. Unfortunately, all it did was to drive a further wedge between them and after Malty made her attempt on Melty's life, she crossed a line that even her mother could not forgive.

Bringing Malty to account for her numerous crimes, Mirellia expelled her from the royal family, stripping her of all the associated titles and privileges. She also allowed Naofumi to inflict a further punishment on her daughter by enabling him to rename her Bitch & Whore. Although Mirellia talked Naofumi down from executing her, Malty completely hated her mother from that day onwards.

Later, after becoming a Vanguard of the Wave, Malty had her ally Takt kill the Queen of Melromarc in cold blood. When he succeeded Malty laughed ecstatically, showing how little regard she had for the woman who gave birth to her. It was this act, which opened her father's eyes to Malty's true colors, whilst sealing her status as a villain and traitor to the whole of Melromarc.

Melty[]

It is not known what Malty and Melty's relationship was like when they were growing up. Throughout the series however, she has never shown any affection towards her younger sibling. On the contrary, Malty considers Melty an obstacle to Melromarc's throne. For this reason, she tried to have her sister killed following the Church of the Three Heroes failed assassination attempt.

For her part, Melty is aware of her sisters baneful and reviled nature. Despite this, she initially continued to worry about Malty's well being and did her best to keep her out of trouble, understanding that her sister needed to be held accountable for her crimes. Following her mothers death however, Queen Melty has accepted that her sister is an enemy who needs to be defeated for the benefit and safety of Melromarc.

Unnamed Brother[]

In the Reprise of the Spear Hero, Melty reveals that she and Malty had a brother. It is unknown how Malty, and her brother's relationship was like, but it can be expected that she didn't care for him. When her brother was to be married to a noble of Siltvelt to from peace between the two countries, he was poisoned and killed by Malty to postpone any peace between the countries and started Aultcray's descent to vengeance as Malty felt no remorse for murdering her brother.

Allies[]

Motoyasu Kimatura[]

Motoyasu is the Hero that Malty joins for most of the story. After betraying Naofumi, taking his stuff and framing him for an attempt of raping her, she gives Motoyasu the stolen chain mail and convinces him of her being the victim. Motoyasu completely trusts her; due mostly to his extreme gullibility, he ends up being used by her in most cases, such as leading him to nearly take Raphtalia away from Naofumi and levying a heavy tax on the village after Motoyasu became its lord. She seems to have sided with him purely because of his good looks. She easily convinced Motoyasu of falsely claiming Naofumi of having a "brainwashing shield," by which he supposedly brainwashed the people, kidnapping the second princess and killing Ren and Itsuki.

Later, when the charges on Naofumi were absolved by the Queen, Motoyasu refused to accept that Malty was the one who framed Naofumi. For the longest time in fact; Motoyasu also seemed to pay little attention to Malty's suspicious behavior, such as her giving a hard time for other female party members and kicking them out (going so far as selling the one named Rino as a slave to a noble), her exceptionally wasteful spending which she claims was for either "for the sake of the world" or calling it "a harsh reform," not to mention her blatant attempts to kill Melty, which Ren and Itsuki have noticed but he didn't. Mr. Kitamura even agreed to shoulder her debt to some extent. After the Spirit Tortoise incident, she abandons him completely. After that, he saw her badmouthing him to Ren of many false charges, which causes his mind to break to the point where he now literally sees all women (with exception to Filolial Queens and some other women) as pigs, indirectly resulting in the awakening of his Legendary Spear's Curse Series.

In the spin-off story "The Reprise of the Spear Hero," Motoyasu still recognizes Malty to some extent as he can only see and hear her like a pig, thus he was always wary of her and warn others about her.

Ren Amaki[]

Ren believes her accusation of Naofumi's attempt to rape her and berates Naofumi without hearing his side of the story. Later, Ren along with Itsuki points her involvement in the foul play of the Sacred Duel between Naofumi and Motoyasu. Choosing to stand up for Naofumi when her idiot father tried his best to drag him down. Ren was the first to notice Malty's attempt to kill Melty while claiming it's to save her from brainwashing and begins to deeply suspect her and the three heroes church. He and Itsuki starting their own independent investigation into they're activities. After all her crimes're brought to light by the Queen to clear Naofumi's name, Ren, along with Itsuki, deemed her punishment received befitting. After the Spirit Tortoise incident, Malty approached Ren and took advantage of his emotional state to manipulate him and use him to escape from Naofumi arresting her.

She later decided he'd be of little use, stole everything of value from him, left him a note belittling him, and joined Mald's revolution, causing Ren's already fragile mental state to fall completely and succumb to the dark influence of his Legendary Sword's Curse Series.

Itsuki Kawasumi[]

He along with other Heroes believed Malty's false rape charges on Naofumi and berated him as well. But he and Ren still questioned her involvement in the Sacred Duel between Naofumi and Motoyasu. He along with Ren calls out on her illegal involvement in the Duel and stands up for Naofumi. When the latter is outed for kidnapping the second princess, after Ren's persuasion, Itsuki agrees to investigate the abduction case on Naofumi. Sharing his fellow heroes suspicions about the event. After her past actions were brought to light by the Queen, he along with Ren concur with her punishment being well deserved. During their stay at Cal Mira Island, he said that Malty spoke in good terms to him before the punishment.

Sometime after the Spirit Tortoise incident, Malty approached Itsuki and took advantage of his emotional instability like she did with Ren. Bitch told him all kinds of lies to convince the broken hero that she was trying to save people from slavery and that Naofumi was evil. This seemed to have activated the Pride Curse Series causing him to only believe those who praised him such as her. He also began fighting at the coliseums in order to raise money for her and his former party, believing they were using it for their "noble" cause of saving people, unaware that they were just been leeching off of him and wasting his money on themselves. As with Ren, she later decided to take all his money & belongings while leaving him in debt, leaving him a similar note of her berating everything about him.

In the "Reprise of the Spear Hero", Due to Motoyasu already knowing of her true personality and his own mental instability and seeing her only as a "red pig", she could no longer manipulate him to do her bidding and he actively avoided her, causing her to instead latch on to Itsuki and successfully manipulate him to do what she wants with little trouble.

Lesty[]

To be added

Pope Balmus[]

In the anime Malty had been in league with the malignant pastor with intent of assassinating her younger sister Melty and framing the Devil of the Shield for her murder. What she assumed was a viable partnership, seeing as she was the one who informed the High Priest of the Bow & Sword heroes probing into their activities. The reality of it was, being said cult leader despised the noble family of Melromarc, that Balmus held Bitch in the bitterest of contempt.

Not merely for being a conniving, disrespectful and small minded imbecile concerned only with her petty schemes and trivial selfish gain; unbefitting of ruling aristocracy. But in truth, was more or less insulted that what he views the most holy order should put up with such a malignant excuse of a leader whose actions and very existence he felt insulted the value of his particular faith.

In the Manga as well as original light novels. Malty wasn't working with the church in the slightest, merely taking advantage of the despicable means to which they were using for her own felonious intrigue. The pope himself likening her and the Spear Hero, whom she had dancing to her offbeat key like a marionette, as vulgar people unfit to occupy the very land said religious faith had placed roots upon. In any event. Malty was shown to be too full of herself to realize her supposed ally never saw her as anything other than, more or less, a loose end in need of tying up

Feeling both shocked and mortified at the revelation she was only a means to an end, not the other way around in her case. Malty promises to personally execute him for "betraying the next queen". Something which is scoffed at since she, like everyone in Motoyasu's party, is as incompetent as its leader.

Mald[]

A blowhard with character akin to sanding paper, not to mention the personality of most higher caste found within Melromarc. The adventurer noble Mald held the former princess in considerable loathing after she was found to be a traitor and criminal. The two of them often traded harsh words against one another whenever they came in contact after Naofumi's name had been cleared. The only thing that could make the haughty aristocrat eke out partly amicable union with Myne when not denouncing the disgraced former princess for her folly. Was an agreement in their shared hollow viewpoint of the Shield Hero. Mald decrying the former as a lesser hero whom partners with monsters and demi's whilst Malty openly citing him as despicable in character and demeanor.

The two of them would later join forces in order to bring about a forced revolutionary change of the kingdom after the Three Heroes Church had been dissolved and their namesake idols disgraced themselves during the Spirit Tortoise incident. Malty striking up a bargain with said disreputable noble to head up an army they would need to depose the crown, due to Mald's wishing that things would stay the same before the hero he backed further made a fool of himself after the calamitous event whilst blaming both the fake Bow Hero and the Devil of the Shield for his own fall from grace as a consequence. Whore would opt to use Itsuki's curse series weapon to mindwarp many of Melromarc's citizens into backing their Staged Populist Uprising whilst working with the Wave Vanguards to replicate the fallen hero's mind controlling weapon abilities after not needing him anymore.

Enemies[]

Naofumi Iwatani[]

Malty is ultimately the cause of Naofumi's dark and cynical personality due to the fact that she betrayed him and falsely framed him for the attempt of raping her for no other visible reason. Naofumi's originally kind personality snapped violently, he became distrustful of anyone who is not a slave, and for a very long time held contempt for women in general. She continued to make him suffer by every means of opportunity, like trying to take his only real means of offense away from him by interfering in the duel for ownership of his slave, calling him a criminal and pinning any crime she can think of upon him. When Naofumi's name was cleared, the queen gave the choice of punishment for Malty to Naofumi. Malty uses her craftiness and appeal to craft a façade of contrition towards Naofumi, with the intention of nullifying her punishment. But she was seen through, and he demanded the death penalty. This was the first and only time for Malty to call Naofumi by his name. After been talked down, her punishment was having her completely stripped of her royal status and her name changed to "Bitch."

Since then, Malty has grown to hate Naofumi more personally and fails to repent or accepted that she got what she deserved. When she approached Ren and Itsuki after the Spirit Tortoise incident, she tricked them into believing that Naofumi was the real evil and that she was the victim, referring him as the Shield Demon. Part of the lies she told them included saying that Naofumi was the one who unsealed the Spirit Tortoise, was working his slaves too hard and keeping all the profits to himself (something Naofumi agreed was true despite everyone on his side pointing it wasn't), and not using the powers of the Shield to bring back people's loved ones who had died, lying to Itsuki that it was a special power that only the Legendary Shield had. Even after betraying them, stealing everything they had, and then leaving a note where she admits these things while also insulting them, she still has the nerve to tell them that all her problems are Naofumi's' fault and she might be willing to love them if they kill him.

Raphtalia[]

Raphtalia, being the shield heroes protector and trusted confidante, adores her handler & savior beyond mere words. Therefore she understandably despises Malty for what she did to Naofumi; holding the reviled imperial in the bitterest contempt as a personal enemy. Myne on the other hand never really seemed to care for the Demi in her enemies service in the slightest. Seeing the former as nothing less than an irritant or eyesore simply for being (as did most of the higher class in Melromarc) a lowly demi-human.

On top of her inherent racism against her clan, coupled with Witch's naturally caustic demeanor. Raphtalia found herself becoming more and more exacerbated with the first princesses petty scheming.

Firstly with orchestrating the rigged duel between The Shield & Spear heroes when the latter hypocritically boasting righteousness on her behalf when in actuality being pettily ignorant that the whole affair was an underhanded means to deprive the Naofumi of his only real ally. In the manga, when her handler's alleged crimes had been quelled by the Queen, she reacted violently when the disgraced Bitch and Itsuki's traveling companion Mald berated the Shield for only having creature's within his party and/or for being second rate in comparison to the other three heroes.

In the anime, the disgraced princess tried to poison the Shield's party with tainted baked goods, only to be caught by Melty and end up electrocuted by her slave crest when trying to cover up her selfish designs.

Biography[]

Past[]

According to her mother and sister, Malty hides in the shadow and enjoys bringing misery to others. It is believed that the reason for her malicious behavior is because her father, Aultcray, spoiled her while she was growing up, causing her to abuse her authority without any consequences. Her lack of discipline and repulsive personality led to her younger sister Melty to be chosen heir apparent to the throne.

To fix her lousy personality, the Queen sent her to study abroad in a school at Faubley. However, all that accomplished was Malty's "graduation" from virginity.

Summoning Arc[]

"Myne Sophie"[]

Malty made her first appearance under the disguise of Myne Sophia. Claiming to be a female adventurer who once intended to join the Spear Hero/Motoyasu Kitamura's team after the four teenagers from other alternate realities was summoned to Melromarc to become Four Heroes who fought the Wave.

However, upon seeing Naofumi Iwanati, the Shield Hero was alone, scorned and detested, Malty volunteered to join Naofumi and assisted him in their early days of adventures. Naofumi started to trust Myne and believed she was a reliable companion in his adventure inside a world he barely knew.

The demonization of the Shield Hero[]

However, it was soon revealed that Myne/Malty was just using Naofumi's insecurity as well as his need for a companion to fool him and manipulate him. After staying in the hotel, Malty faked her kind attitude to Naofumi and bought him new armor as a way to convince him she meant for good. Soon, when Naofumi went asleep, Malty stole all of his equipment and money, before finding Motoyasu and lying to him that Naofumi went drunk and raped her.

Motoyasu immediately reported the king about it, and the next day, the royal soldiers arrested Naofumi, who was lost, confused, and panicked to find his money. All his equipment (barring his shield) had been stolen. Being forced to kneel in front of the king, Naofumi claimed he did nothing wrong when he saw Malty "crying" by Motoyasu, falsely accusing Naofumi trying to rape him, before gleefully and silently mocked Naofumi when no other people noticed this, except the victim.

Naofumi realized everything connected to "Myne Sophia" was a lie. She followed him to raid everything from him, nothing more. Enraged and disgusted, Naofumi broke free from the guards and vowed to return for vengeance before storming out of the palace. Afterward, Malty returned to the group of Motoyasu, who trusted her in every word because of her beauty and her manipulative skills.

Second Wave Arc[]

Naofumi VS. Motoyasu[]

After the second wave had been stopped, a party was thrown in celebration of victory. Among the partygoers were Naofumi and his slave companion, Raphtalia. During the festivities, Malty lies to Motoyasu that Raphtalla was forced to be Naofumi's companion. Believing this, Motoyasu demanded Raphtalla be freed. The King then ordered a 1-on-1 duel between Naofumi and Motoyasu, where should the Spear Hero be victorious, the demi-human would be freed. Naofumi was winning the duel, but lost after Myne hit him with a wind spell. Many people saw this act but were forced to be silent on the King's orders, as he wanted to discredit the Shield Hero further. After the match was called, Myne's true identity as Princess was revealed. However, Raphtailia slapped Motoyasu for his accusations, and Malty's deception was revealed by Ren and Itsuki, the other two heroes.

Filo Rial Arc[]

While training with his newly hatched Filolial Filo, Naofumi discovered Malty manipulated Motoyasu again. This time to heavily tax a small village, damaged by the last wave, to build his new base of operations. Naofumi called Motoyasu out for his idiocy and what he was doing to the village. During this time, several shadows, elite ninja-like figures who protect the Royal Family, approached Malty. On orders from her mother, Malty ordered a race between Naofumi and Motoyasu on their mounts. With Naofumi on Filo and Motoyasu on his dragon, the two raced around the village three times, with Malty ordering the royal guards to cheat using magic. Despite this, Naofumi still won, and Malty was ordered to leave.

Peddling Arc[]

According to the news gathered by Naofumi, the other three Heroes were on their own mission and fought in other realms like playing games. In Motoyasu's case, he accompanied Malty to save a village from famine. It was speculated by Naofumi that Malty suggested Motoyasu to use a kind of magical seed to grow plants to harvest more foods from its fruits.

However, unbeknownst to Motoyasu, the seed was actually demonized. The plants it grew could only be ended up fully mutated into monstrous beings when it was not sealed properly. Eventually, the mutant plants turned into an enormous and menacing threat to the villagers nearby, and it took the combined force of Naofumi, Raphtalia, and Filo to destroyed it. Afterward, Naofumi reconstructed the seed with his newly found power and made it harmless, successfully solving both famine and plant monster's invasion at the same time.

Whether Malty knew about the seed's true nature was unknown, but judging from the warning sign in front of the chest where the seed was contained, it was highly speculated that Malty actually knew the consequence all along when she stole the tabooed seed, but she didn't care anyway since she only tried to manipulate Motoyasu just like she once manipulated Naofumi.

Third Wave Arc[]

Devil of the Shield Arc[]

On orders from a mysterious cult, several knights altered footage of Naofumi's party fighting back against the renegades after they attempted to kill Melty, Malty's little sister, and next in line to the throne. To make them look like criminals, even going so far as to spread rumors that he was brainwashing her against the heir apparent's will.

Using this, Malty organized the remaining three parties of the Cardinal Heroes to attack Naofumi in a forest. During this time, Malty attempts to kill Melty with powerful fire spells; hypocritically calling it saving her from braiswashing. This action horrified the other heroes, who questioned the excessive force on her sister. Especially after ordering the creation of a wildfire after the Shield's party escaped into the adjacent forest. Myne eventually spies upon the Sword and Bow heroes parties as they investigate Naofumi's words about the Church's questionability. She soon informs the sect's people whom then lead them into a deadly trap in an unmarked cavern site. Motoyasu's party would later catch up to Naofumi's crew again, believing Naofumi killed Ren and Itsuki (due to Malty’s manipulations in the matter).

During this time, the two parties are almost killed by Pope Balmus, High Priest of the Church of the Three Heroes and the mastermind of the summoning of the four cardinal heroes. However, Malty is forced to, reluctantly, join Melty and her allies in Naofumi's party with fighting the Pope until Ren and Itsuki arrive to assist, only for all four Cardinal Heroes to be trapped in the Pope's ultimate imprisonment spell, Cathedral.

Just as he's about to strike them down once and for all, Queen Mirellia, Malty and Melty's mother, immobilizes him with her ice magic, buying time for Naofumi to unleash his Blood Sacrifice attack, leaving him mortally weakened from the amount of his blood used to complete the summoning, but unleashing a monstrosity that not only destroys the Pope's Replica Weapon, but also crushes him to death before dragging his corpse to Hell where he belonged, leaving his shellshocked and horrified devotees to be arrested by Mirellia and her troops to be possibly executed for blasphemy and treason against Melromarc.

Punishment Arc[]

Malty does not get away that easily as well. She and her father, King Aultcray, are arrested and brought before Queen Mirellia, Melty, and the Four Cardinal Heroes in irons to be tried and convicted of numerous crimes against them. Knowing Malty is a pathological liar, Mirellia has Malty branded with a Slave Crest, similar to Raphtalia's, so that any attempt by her to lie will be met with a painful electrocution from the crest to prove she was not being honest and telling the truth. Once Malty is branded, the trial gets underway. The first charge against Malty was conspiring with the Pope and Church of the Three Heroes. Though she is shocked for lying about working with the Church, she is not shocked when she mentions she had no part in the Pope's plan to overthrow the Melromarc Royal Family and usurp the throne. However, the next charge is for the attempt on Melty's life regarding the forest fire Malty set with support from the corrupt Royal Guards in her service. As Malty is shocked with every lie she tells regarding it, the captain who followed her orders is reduced to a nervous wreck at realizing he had been duped and used by the traitorous First Princess as the soldier who helped Naofumi previously glares at him for his stupidity in following Malty's orders that should have been ignored, while Aultcray is horrified by Malty trying to kill her own little sister just to regain her claim to the throne. Finally, the big crime is brought up: Accusing Naofumi of raping her. Malty's lies to that are met with the worst shocking the Slave Crest can give her, and Motoyasu pleads to form a Slave Pact with Malty himself to see if she had lied to him as well. When it is clear Malty had been lying to him, Motoyasu is left in total shock by the revelation after he trusted her so much as his party member. Mirellia is livid with Malty, as her lies and deceit have been exposed, proving she betrayed her kingdom and people for her own greed and lust for power. When Aultcray also seals his own doom with still considering Naofumi the "Devil of the Shield" and not wanting to risk losing another family member as a result after losing his sister previously, Mirellia is left with no choice.

I hereby find Aultcray Melromarc XXXII and Malty Melromarc guilty of high treason and conspiracy, and strip them of their status. I sentence them to death!
~ Queen Mirellia passes her verdict and sentence on her husband and eldest daughter

The people of Melromarc are shocked by the Queen's decision, but when she publicly denounces her family as traitors and deserve a traitor's death via beheading by the guillotine, the crowd join in Mirellia's decision, denouncing Aultcray and Malty, blaming them for all their family, friends, property, and livelihoods they lost because of the King and First Princess' actions and wanting justice and retribution. Malty and her father are placed in the stocks and locked in, and as Mirellia prepares to give the signal, the swordsmen ready to cut the ropes. Malty pleads for Motoyasu to help her, but he turns his face away from her in disgust, horrifying her that not even the man she manipulated the most is going to spare her life. Desperate to be allowed to live, Malty turns to the only person left she thinks can show her mercy: The one person she's wronged the most, the Shield Hero, Naofumi. Malty's pleas also show to Naofumi that she's being honest asking for his help as her Slave Crest is not reacting. Seeing she really is being honest begging for his help to save her life from execution, Naofumi calls out to Mirellia to hold cutting the ropes to the blades, asking why the King and Malty should be executed for their crimes as it seems like the coward's way out for them. Naofumi instead suggests that the King and Malty be spared, but have their reputation permanently slurred by officially changing their names to "Trash" for Aultcray, and "Bitch" for Malty, with her traveling name of Myne being replaced with "Whore". Mirellia agrees to Naofumi's idea, and spares her husband and eldest daughter, with their names and rep permanently tarnished, while Naofumi's rep is restored now that his name had been cleared.

However, angered by Naofumi's cruel mercy with sparing her life, but changing her names permanently to "Bitch" and "Whore", Malty tries to poison some food meant for Raphtalia and Filo during the banquet later on, but is caught by Melty, and when she tries to lie her way out, gets a painful shocking from her Slave Crest.

Cal Mira Island Arc[]

Nevertheless, Malty is still allowed to join Motoyasu's party for the trip to Cal Mira to grind bonus experience for the next Wave of Catastrophe, and remains with him for the whole excursion, even when Motoyasu gets seasick, Filo catches some large sharks for dinner and nearly crushes Malty with one of them, and when they fight Glass again with her fellow Heroes L'arc and Theresa.

Spirit Turtle Arc[]

Malty was among those who were forced by the Queen into training and study sessions for the upcoming waves, despite the reluctance. In fact, Malty herself openly whined about the Monk training from Elrasla Ragnarok. It was here, Ren, Itsuki, and Motoyasu had finally had enough of the Queen's treatment and decided to quit being heroes. Queen Mirella offered them release if they could defeat a strange monster seen near the border. Using mounts and various tricks, Malty and the other party members charged at it. The beast, as it turned out, was the Spirit Turtle, a gigantic creature of legend. The attack failed with only Ren's party dying from this, and the three heroes were kidnapped in the process by Kyo Ethnina. Malty and the other party members quickly abandoned the heroes.

Fallen Heroes Arc[]

After the Spirit Tortoise incident, Malty she abandons Motoyasu completely. She approached Ren and took advantage of his emotional state to manipulate him and use him to escape from Naofumi arresting her. After that, Motoyasu saw her badmouthing him to Ren of many false charges (including the same charges she made against Naofumi), which causes his mind to break to the point where he now literally sees all women (with exception to Filolial Queens and some other women) as pigs.

Greed Arc (Volume 11)[]

She later decided Ren would be of little use, stole everything of value from him, left him a note belittling him, and joined Itsuki, causing Ren's already fragile mental state to fall completely and succumb to the dark influence of his Legendary Sword's Curse Series.

Justice Arc (Volume 12)[]

Malty then approached Itsuki and took advantage of his emotional instability like she did with Ren. As with Ren, she later decided to take all his money & belongings while leaving him in debt, leaving him a similar note of her berating everything about him, with a postscript mockingly asking Itsuki to kill the Shield Hero for her. She was last seen in a carriage with Mald and the rest of Itsuki's party, counting the money she'd swindled from the Bow Hero.

This incident completely shattered Isuki's ego, to the point where he has no will of his own, requiring assistance and direction from others to perform even basic tasks.

Post-War of Heroes Arc (Light Novel Only)[]

Late during Naofumi and company's opposition of her, Malty orders her minions to launch their cannons at Filo, but she was able to evade them with her speed. Malty armed herself with a whip, a Seven Star weapon, in an attempt to kill her foes in an attempt to sate her lust for attention and made a mockery of the idea of destroying accessories to retrieve the vassal weapons. Malty was about to fatally strike Naofumi when one of her cronies betrays and pays back the former princess her game of betrayal by fatally stabbing her, revealing herself to be Rino as she still had her sword stabbed through Malty's midriff as she twists it. After sending Malty falling, Rino proceeds to stab her again as part of her vicious vengeance on the former princess, making a maniacal laugh as Rino tortures her while Malty's former victim is being covered by Raphtalia and Naofumi who ensure Rino finishes her revenge by turning the vassal whip into a mace and smashing Malty's head in.

However, Malty's soul was retrieved along with her corpse, prompting Naofumi and company to try and pursue the villains who did so in an attempt from the heroes to intervene in Malty's resurrection and make her suffer it does succeed. But the vassal ship their foes used to retreat from them escapes with Malty's corpse and soul.

Quotes[]

...fumi please... Naofumi please! I beg you! Help me! Naofumi! Naofumi please!
~ Malty begging Naofumi for mercy.

Trivia[]

  • Malty Melromarc was the center of one of the most controversial subjects of 2018-2019 following the first episodes launch. Even before its release, Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari/Rising of the Shield Hero preemptively stirred up "drama online" when fans discovered that the series revolved around a man being falsely accused of rape. With critics labeling it as a show for “vicious regressive misogynists". In several places of Internet, the false rape accusation orchestrated by Malty in the first chapter (episode) managed to enrage those online who take offense at the mere thought that a woman could falsely accuse a man of rape, claiming women never lie about rape accusations. Anime News Network, for example, received a lot of negative comments after one of their critics ranted Malty's false accusation of rape was all about the author's "personal hardships".
  • In the series first draft, i.e. the Web-Novel, Malty Melromarc was eventually revealed to be a soul fragment of Medea Pideth Machina. Medea, who was identical to Malty in both appearance and personality, was the evil goddess responsible for creating the waves and therefore the overarching antagonist of the entire series. During her final battle with Naofumi, Medea confirmed that she crafted Malty and several other agents to sow destruction across the various worlds, hinder the heroes progress and destroy key knowledge or technologies needed to combat the waves thus ensuring Medea's inevitable victory. This revelation excused Malty's actions somewhat, as it meant that she had no choice in what she was doing and by her very nature inherently evil. When the series was rewritten as a light novel however, the author decided to make Malty and the currently unnamed God behind the Waves separate beings. Thus, in the canon storylines, Malty is a irredeemable villain by her own choice.
  • Despite being easily the most hated character of the series by the entire fanbase, Malty still managed to enter in the Popularity Poll of 2019 with five-hundred and fifty votes and almost making it into the top ten.

  • Like any member of the royal family, Malty can only have sexual relationships after marriage. Still, it was later revealed by the Queen of Melromarc that Malty was not a virgin and has implied her daughter had quite a few lovers.
  • Naofumi personally considers Malty's handwriting to be messy, implying she doesn't like to write or even study.
  • All of Malty's actions represent the Seven Deadly Sins.
    • Pride: Extremely arrogant and narcissistic, Malty has an extremely high opinion of herself and is very vindictive when put in her place by someone more capable than her.
    • Wrath: Very easy to anger and makes rash decisions without thinking things through.
    • Greed: Malty has an immense love for money and will overspend on herself so she can keep herself fancy, even stealing the heroes' possessions and money when they're no longer any use to her.
    • Lust: Manipulates men for her own selfish ends as she is a dirty vixen who will go after the most handsome men, for example Motoyasu as he is a gullible perverted idiot.
    • Envy: Whenever someone else gets anything she thinks she's entitled to, she thinks it belongs to her, especially the throne of Melromarc which has been given to Melty and not her and is willing to murder her sister just to gain more power.
    • Gluttony: While not a glutton for food, her gluttony for power is absolute as she was spoiled rotten by her father which immersed her power-hungry urges.
    • Sloth: Despite being skilled in fire magic, she never makes an effort to improve herself and relies on others to fight for her, considering she's a major coward, only her pawns can fight for her.
  • Interestingly, the respective Japanese voice actresses of Melromarc Sisters also worked together in Date A Live anime series in voicing Yamai Sisters. The voice actress of Malty, Sarah Emi Bridcutt, voiced Yuzuru Yamai, and the voice actress of Melty (Malty's younger sister), Maaya Uchida, voiced Kaguya Yamai.
    • Also, Sarah Emi Bridcutt is the only cast in the anime that will reprise her role in the 2020 stage adaptation.
  • In the web story, Malty was first killed by the King of Faubley after becoming his spouse. She was later revealed to have faked her death (using a fake body), but met her true end after being burnt at the stake and having her soul devoured by a group of Soul Eaters.
    • In the light novel continuity, Malty had her body destroyed in Volume 19, but her soul was saved. Thus, she is technically still alive and will probably return in future publications.
