Malvado is a myth-the criminal equivalent of the boogeyman. Don't snitch or Malvado will get you. He's made-up.
Who's made up? (...) Oh, he's definitely real. Myths don't leave a trail of bodies across the border.
~ Detectives Lopez and Harper explaining Malvado's legend.

Malvado is a recurring antagonist in The Rookie. He is a legendary hitman who has cross paths with LAPD on multiple occasions,

He is portrayed by Jimmy Gonzales.

Biography[]

As mentioned by Det. Angela Lopez, Malvado is said to be the "boogeyman" in the criminal underworld and there was unspoken rule to not snitch otherwise he'd come for them. However, she like many cops believes him to be a myth but Det. Nyla Harper confirms his existence and reveal the reason he was able to stay under the radar is because of his tactical thinking and vast resources from contracted criminal organizations that helped him elude the authorities. Harper also revealed that Malvado has amassed several victims across the border and anyone he targets is a dead man for sure, with many open cases suspected of being his doing. FBI Agent Laura Stensen remarked on his infamy, noting if he'd ever get caught or killed it could lead to a major win.

Out of Pocket[]

He makes his debut, where his reputation is revealed to Nolan after it was revealed that he was going after fugitive Jason Wyler. He wants to find Jason before Malvado could, deciding to go after Trey Duncan, Jason's former cellmate for any clues on his location. However, Malvado got the same idea and found Duncan first, beating him for answers only for Duncan to deny knowledge. Nolan arrived and found them, Malvado shoots Duncan and flees while Nolan helps the wounded man before pursuing Malvado. They enter a shoot-out, as Malvado reveals his knowledge of Nolan and even ask that he let him hunt Jason to be rid of him.

Darkness Failing[]

He began stalking Bailey Nune, wife of Nolan and ex-wife of Jason for any info on his target. However, she quickly figured out he was following her and lured him to a secluded spot, before escaping his sight and entering his car to hold him at gunpoint. He was impressed that she got the drop on him, and she questioned his pursuit of her, leading him to reveal he was looking for Jason. Bailey was shocked to learn his identity and questioned why she shouldn't alert the cops to his whereabouts, but he plays on her feelings by bringing up Jason's abuse of her. He offers the same thing he did Nolan by letting him do his job, offering his number but lets her know it can't be tracked.

Til' Death[]

After shooting Jason's girlfriend/accomplice Drew Davis, the latter realized Malvado was around and quickly alerted this to Nolan. It is implied Jason would rather face jail than face death from Malvado, who proceeds to wait for him to emerge from hiding and sniping him once he does. After Jason's death, a successful Malvado flees the scene as Nolan reports his presence and has the team search for him. However, Malvado quickly slipped into a nearby crowd, easily escaping LAPD's efforts.

Mad About Murder[]

He resurfaced and was hired to kill another hitman and dispose of people who subscribed to a murder for hire site, though this garnered attention from LAPD and the FBI. While reviewing street cam footage from the latest murder, Nolan recognized Malvado and identified him to Lopez and Bradford, stating he'd never forget that face and Stensen was shocked to learn he was involved. The gathered teams deduced he was the person responsible for cleaning up for an unknown employer and getting him would provide a major victory. Nolan relayed to Bailey that Malvado was back and she was worried if he'd blackmail them to stay out of prison.

Soon the teams realize that he'd likely eliminate loose ends and found out he was going after Mitch Yancy, an arrogant rich boy who used the website to kill people who offended him. They anticipate his strategy, so when went to a golf course that Yancy frequented, he disguised himself as a golfer and prepared to snipe Yancy, but the latter was apprehended by the authorities, and he was confronted by Bradford and Nolan who ordered him to surrender. However, he leaped over the roof, being pursued by the two officers and entering a fight with them. Eventually, he overpowered them and prepared to escape but Lopez arrived and threatened him. He seemingly surrendered but reached for a hidden gun, before being shot dead by her.

Trivia[]

  • Lopez initially didn't believe in him, until learning from Harper and Nolan's encounter with him.
