Santiago meets María Mercedes when she sells him a lottery and in time he proposes marriage to her to leave her aunt Malvina without the fortune she so badly desires. Malvina turns against her making her life impossible, even so María Mercedes falls in love with Jorge Luis.

Malvina enters Santiago's room and says that everyone will inherit his fortune and no one will remember him. Then he looks for his respirator and she doesn't give it, killing him by suffocation

Malvina manages to marry Maria Mercedes and Jorge Luis by civilian, who has not been able to overcome Diana's life, and whose volunteer is totally added to what her mother says. Después Malvina tries to dissolve the union at all costs, saying that Jorge Luis is ill and refusing to say that Meche is on the spot. On the other hand is Mistica, a beautiful and sensual woman, but frivolous and selfish who desperately loves Jorge Luis. At some point he tries to bring his life back to Mistica, a relationship approved by his mother that Mistica has money.

After a terrible vacation in which Jorge Luis, after the intrigues of Malvina and Mística, decided to leave María Mercedes definitively to return to Mística, María Mercedes was admitted to a Madhouse through Malvina, from which she escaped in the first chance. Jorge Luis, now calmer, asks the authorities not to search for her and leave her alone. Later he realizes that he is more in love than ever with María Mercedes and asks her to return to the house with him and live like his wife again. At the time of delivery, María Mercedes gives birth to twins, one of whom dies from malformations.

Don Sebastián dies in a car accident along with his lover when leaving for his new home. Malvina, knowing that Mística is a widow and heir to Don Sebastián's fortune, again urges Jorge Luis to leave María Mercedes to join Mística and have her money. Jorge Luis, in love with his wife and bored with maternal pressure, leaves the house to live with María Mercedes. Malvina has a fit of anger out of ambition, desire for revenge and despair when she sees that the son she has dominated for years is leaving and that all her plans have failed. In this trance he dresses in the rags that María Mercedes used to wear and takes to the streets to clean car windshields and sell lottery tickets. Finally she is taken to a madhouse.
