Mami Nanami is the main antagonist of the 2017 romantic comedy manga Rent-A-Girlfriend and its 2020 anime adaptation. She is a student of Nerima University and the ex-girlfriend of Kazuya Kinoshita whom she dumped in favor of dating someone 'new', thus setting off the some events through the series.
She is voiced by Aoi Yūki (who also voices Clementine and Tanya von Degurechaff) in Japanese and by Laura Stahl (who also voices Louis James Moriarty as a child, Ramlethal Valentine, Scarletta Gateau and Zinnia) in the English dub.
Biography[]
Season 1[]
After dating Kazuya Kinoshita, Mami dumps him a month later under the claim that she had met someone "new". As a result of this, Kazuya becomes depressed before discovering "Rent-A-Girlfriend" an app where he could pay a girl to be his girlfriend. Through the app, Kazuya meets Chizuru Mizuhara only to become disillusioned when he realizes that her outer personality was a sham.
Sometime after dating, the two discover that they are both attending Nerima University and they are additionally neighbors at the same apartment complex. During their time settling in, Kazuya gets invited out to a restaurant where he inadvertently invites Chizuru to attend.
Seeing that Kazuya seemingly had a new girlfriend, Mami becomes jealous and begins to formulate a plan to sabotage the relationship. She starts to throw jabs at Kazuya mocking how he was incompetent throughout their relationship particularly when it came to their intimate moments together. Chizuru, disgusted at how Kazuya would not defend himself, calls Mami out on her abuse. However, Mami then turns her attention to her ex-boyfriend forcing Kazuya to apologize for her.
Walking home with Kazuya, Mami proceeds to speak badly about Chizuru, but this time, Kazuya talks up to her. Fuming over it, Mami communicates with her female friends through text messages that she was going to break the two up no matter what. In episode 3, Kazuya and his friends decide to go out to the beach which Mami takes advantage of. Whilst swimming in the water, she pulls Kazuya away by pretending that she had "lost" an expensive bracelet. With Kazuya not being the wiser, Mami steals a kiss from him.

Mami is a rather short young woman with blonde hair that is styled in a bouncy bob where it has subtle pink highlighted tips, bright blue eyes and a small frame with nice and slender legs.
Her daily outfit changes from time to time, but usually with light clothing, a purse and a skirt that flaunts her fair skin.
In contrast to her sweet and approachable appearance, Mami can exhibit a cold and frightening demeanor when disgruntled. In this state, she scares away men trying to flirt with her and even causes her friends to pause in bewilderment at her reactions.
Personality[]
Growing up in a strict household, Mami did what her parents said and did not complain. In the past, she was given an arranged marriage. In addition, her father sought influence and power. When she got a boyfriend when she was a teenager, her father did not approve and ended up convincing her boyfriend to break up with her, which made her feel that all love was fake.
Described as an angel by Kazuya Kinoshita, Mami has a cheerful and friendly demeanor. However, on the inside, Mami is a deeply possessive young woman who immediately becomes suspicious of her ex-boyfriend's relationship with Chizuru Ichinose. Despite her dumping Kazuya to begin with, Mami becomes jealous and makes it her mission to sabotage the relationship. Worse, it is not because she wants Kazuya back, but her actions are motivated by the fact that she cannot stand that Kazuya seemingly moved on from her.
In addition, Mami is psychopathic, violent and manipulative as she constantly sending Kazuya mixed messages about whether she wants to date him again or not. She also freely belittles him, with no remorse on doing so and when called on it, she immediately reverts back to her loving girlfriend façade demanding that Kazuya apologize for her. In the end, she truly views Kazuya to be a worthless loser, but she will not allow him a chance at happiness. Mami is possibly shown to have misandristic views, given by her manipulating men.
