Susan "Mandark" Astronomonov is the main antagonist of the Cartoon Network TV show Dexter's Laboratory and its feature film Dexter's Laboratory: Ego Trip. He is an evil and diabolical young scientist who is Dexter's sworn arch-rival and evil counterpart.

He was voiced by Eddie Deezen, who also voiced Ped in Transformers: Robots in Disguise.

Biography[]

In many ways, Mandark is the "Anti-Dexter", as while Dexter is an incredibly knowledgeable boy with an otherwise ordinary life, Mandark is an openly fiendish inventor who is motivated not so much out of curiosity as he is by greed, hate, and outright malevolence. He shares certain similarities with his sister Lalavava and they are both the opposites and rivals of Dexter and his sister Dee Dee, the latter of whom he is madly in love with.

Mandark takes great joy in inflicting misery on Dexter but due to his obsessive love for Dee Dee, Mandark has at times allied with Dexter - though these unions are rare and doomed to failure due to the two having very different views on the world.

Mandark is arguably seen at his most evil during the one-hour special episode/mini-movie known as "Ego Trip" in which he progressively grows worse in variant futures: to the point of becoming an outright monster by the end of the movie who engages in a "final showdown" with his nemesis, aided by an entire army of variant Mandark's from many different time-lines.

Mandark was born in the peaceful land of Flowertopia where his idiotic hippie parents Oceanbird and Windbear were in a lake giving birth to him. With Oceanbird's last breath of maternal exhalation, she had finally brought her newborn lovechild into the world. They both wanted their son to be good and just like them. But, as soon as he was born, he was struck by a random bolt of lightning, which made him truly evil on the inside.

Later, Oceanbird and Windbear were up on top of a hill where they thought about what they would name him. Oceanbird and Windbear named their child Susan because they wanted a name that was “whispered through the canyon winds”, and Oceanbird had requested a name without the preconceived gender connotations. The moment the two of them named him Susan, he started crying. Oceanbird and Windbear started teaching him all about their hippie beliefs and made him do their rituals with them. Their full intent was for him to be a good and pure flower-child and for him to believe in peace just like them. Susan however, was still truly evil on the inside and didn't like this. One day, he was crawling and came across a metal gizmo on the ground. He loved everything about it and was mesmerized by how great it was. He turned it on and it was a light bulb. Susan wanted to know everything about this and to be someone who is related to science. However, his plans for said thing would have to wait, because Oceanbird and Windbear had a different idea for his development.

Oceanbird and Windbear constantly kept doing hippie rituals with him. Activity after activity and he didn't like any of them and still desired to be evil. They tried making him hug trees, but he bit chunks out of them. They tried painting beautiful murals, but he painted demonic horrors. They tried balancing amethysts, and he was bored with it. Years after, on Susan's “annual name day”, he finally snapped because he couldn't take anymore of the hippie lifestyle. He said that he wanted meat, and he wanted science. Oceanbird and Windbear came to the realization that they were neglecting their son’s needs and then had the idea to drop out. They tried traveling the world to try and cure his craving for evil and technology and Susan went along with this and did not deny it. Even though he wanted to become good, he still had the need to be evil.

Oceanbird and Windbear moved out of their town and into the neighborhood where Mandark lives now. One day, Susan saw Dexter outside the latter’s house with one of his inventions. Susan loved it, and tried to make friends with Dexter, but Dexter laughed at him for being girly (Susan had long hair and wore pink hippy clothes). He was so angry about being made fun of that he decided to become an evil genius named Mandark. Mandark became evil and wanted only to destroy Dexter and his laboratory. He even decided to go out and try and do so after he told the story, but when he was about to get to the door, Oceanbird and Windbear told him to put down the weaponry and do a hippie ritual with them. Mandark said that he would get his revenge on Dexter someday.

Villainous Acts[]

  • In Dexter's Laboratory: Ego Trip: Mandark nearly crosses the moral event horizon when he would soon become a much abusive, power-hungry and sadistic madman who would end up enduring painful torture to future Dexter (who is a feeble meek) who would force to work in his company, as revealed later in the movie by Action Dexter that Mandark is the tyrannical Overlord after constantly being ties with Dexter's complex and far superior patents after both being hired as research scientists, compared to his long nemesis, which Dexter's ideas were getting more attention than his own, in desperation, Mandark secretly plagiarises Dexter's plans with his own, embarking himself on a dark path by climbing up the corporate hierarchy until finally usurping and killing the previous CEO of the company by booting him out of the corporation in order to take control as the president by becoming a much cruel figure and later a powerful Tyrant who would use Dexter's greatest creation The Super Neurotomic Protocore by creating a machine to harvest it's energy, however much to his hubris, Mandark turned the lever to negative which became to emit a much brooding atmosphere and presumably mutating Mandark as the substantial and stout megalomaniac who increasibly became infected by the emitted effects from the negative Protocore which drove him progressively more evil. However Overlord Mandark's actions were unsubstantial towards the townsfolk who were also infected by the operational machine Mandark harvested the negative energy from the Neurotomic Protocore which downgrades many citizens into terrible conditions due to being corrupted into dimwitted klutz. while also coming into conflicts with Action Dexter who became a hulking action hero, became enraged over his own inventions were perverted by his greatest enemy, came to great lengths to literally dug himself free from Mandark's building to force himself underground for years in order to take back his prized possession at all costs. Mandark forced himself to take measures by summoning his alternate selves to clash with dexter once again as each variant overwhelmed each other for the react of the active "Flo-control" which was successfully thwarted by present Dee-Dee who stumbled upon Dexter's time machine The Mandarks quickly became an overwhelming infatuated-state, after Dee-Dee flawlessly pushes the green button to reverse and convert the evil energy into discharging optimistic good fields of energy, leading to all the Mandarks to be banished back to their own timelines, eventually. Overlord Mandark who was stabled physique was withheld by the negative energy which led him to explode into nothing but a brain intact where his only remains were placed in his nemesis's museum.
  • In A Mandark Cartoon: Mandark was preparing another plan to destroy Dexter, but unfortunately, Dexter and his dad went to picnic, causing him to cry.
  • In Momdark: he kidnaps Dexter's mom, by puting her suspended animation, he disguises himself as Mom. However, his plans were foiled by Dexter, Dee Dee and dad who believe that it's her. Just as Dexter's mom got herself free, Mandark realizes that the real Dexter's mom is her, he takes of disguises and runs away.

Appearance[]

Mandark is a tall boy with a black bowl-cut hairstyle that lays around the top of his head like a helmet. It has a white shiny glare on it and an M shaped opening at the bottom. This hairstyle was passed down to him by his father, Windbear, which was also passed down to his little sister Lalavava. Mandark has a head that is big at the top and gets skinnier at the bottom near his neck. He has nerdy glasses which look exactly like Dexter's and he normally wears a white dress shirt, blue shorts, long black socks, and brown shoes. In seasons 3 and 4 he also wears a yellow tie with black stripes with this outfit. In seasons 3 and 4, he occasionally wears a red sleeveless shirt with yellow M-shaped zigzags on the front, red gloves, a black belt with a yellow buckle, yellow legless bottoms, red shoes with long red socks and a large red cape.

His sleepwear consists of long aqua-colored pajamas with black stripes and blue slippers, and his swimwear is a pair of blue swimming trunks.

As Dexter's Mom, he has the same clothes and hair, also he dislikes work and chores at Dexter's House.

Abilities[]

  • Extraordinary Genius level of Intelligence: Remains a consistent threat against Dexter, matching a lot of his inventions. His laboratory is stated to contain every ascept of science known to humans. When Mandark was introduced, he was actually significantly smarter than Dexter himself to the point he shut down his lab after seeing Mandark's own for the first time. Developed a method of time travel, created advanced machinery from nothing, and developed a way to digitalize himself, others, and objects and trap them in data. Has knowledge in other subjects like occult/dark forces as well, being an excellent hunter and survivor and is a skilled fighter with knowledge of martial arts, capable of matching Dexter, who once defeated an entire military squad on his own in his underwear. When he was a young adult, he took over the company and conquered the world by stealing Dexter's ideas and presenting them to higher-ups as his own. Also has a bit more common sense than Dexter and isn't as naïve. However, after initially having his lab destroyed, his skills in science dropped to the point of being slightly inferior to Dexter despite having previously far surpassed him. While Mandark science skills become slighty than Dexter, his inventions, tecnologies and science skills are often better then Dexter so Mandark is still the smartest character of the Franchies.
  • Mastery of invention: Mandark's greatest skill is building highly advanced and dangerous machines, robots, and weapons. Some of his notable creations include:
    • The Mandark-Bot: A giant, powerful mecha often used for combat against Dexter's Robo-Dexo.
    • Robotic minions: Various robots designed to perform tasks around his lab, assist in experiments, or attack rivals.
    • Time travel technology: He has developed and used machines capable of traveling through time.
    • Other weaponry: His arsenal includes a shrink ray, various laser guns, and a satellite laser cannon.
  • Vast laboratory: Similar to Dexter, Mandark has his own enormous, high-tech secret laboratory. Its appearance has changed over the series, evolving from a futuristic design to a darker, more gothic look reflecting his increasingly evil nature.
  • Technological mastery: Like Dexter, Mandark built his own high-tech laboratory equipped with a powerful central computer. He uses advanced technology for surveillance, transportation, and combat.
  • Torture methodology: When mandark became the president of the Corporation he always hit dexter with a laser whip everytime he almost late from work, tthe tortures were are so traumazied dexter he was even forgot his name, and he think his name was number 12.
  • Dark magic knowledge: In his pursuit of knowledge, Mandark once created a book called The Magic of Science after communing with an inter-dimensional being. He has used this knowledge to perform magical feats, including banishing supernatural beings.
  • Mind reading (early episodes): In his first appearance, Mandark demonstrated the ability to read minds, though this power was dropped from later episodes.
  • Mathematics experienced: He has demonstrated a superior mastery of mathematics by completing complex equations on a chalkboard faster than Dexter.
  • Enhanced durability: He has been shown to survive extreme situations, including explosions, crash landings, and attacks from giant robots, though he does have surprising limits, such as choking on cereal.
  • Skilled Fighter: Mandark has occasionally displayed combat skills, fighting Dexter with robot-like gauntlets and even defeating the U.S. Army barehanded in one instance.

Personality[]

Mandark is an evil, greedy, arrogant, diabolical, cunning, malevolent, and unscrupulous boy genius who is bent on the destruction of Dexter's laboratory and ruling the world.

He is an incredibly fraudulent, intelligent, and manipulative individual who, when first introduced, was leagues ahead of Dexter in terms of knowledge and accomplishments, but after having his lab and heart destroyed by Dexter and Dee Dee, his scientific skills became far less impressive than Dexter's, likely due to the mental trauma of seeing his greatest works completely destroyed and having his one true love be used against him. But he often made better tech and had better common sense, so Mandark is still smarter than Dexter.

Ever since, Mandark has always been one step behind Dexter and has done all he can to get the better of his rival and prove once and for all that he is the superior boy genius, but every time he tries to, he ends up failing horribly. After Mandark's laboratory was destroyed, he eventually built a new one to resemble the old, but eventually he remodeled his lab and gave it a darker and more Gothic-look, with many of the machines being replaced with bio-mechanical equipment; apparently meant to represent Mandark's growing evil nature, which was a result of his ever growing hatred for Dexter and his constant failures.

His dark desires and evil ego continued to grow throughout his life, and by the time he reached adulthood, he became a full-blown supervillain who desired the complete take over and enslavement of the planet. It is implied that Mandark's dark nature is due to living a lonely life, as mentioned in "Mandarker", where he states that he has no friends or hobbies and the only thing he had in life was his lab and experiments. Eventually though, Mandark would gain an interest in surfing after "Sun, Surf, and Science" and gained his first real friend in the form of the Surfer Boy. In seasons 3 and 4, Mandark's motives and personality were drastically changed, with the story implying that he had always been villainous even since his birth and always had the Gothic motif he had in said seasons.

However, there is another side to Mandark's personality, which is his intense love for Dee Dee. Ever since he first laid eyes on her, Mandark has been completely enamored with her to the point of obsession and whenever he is not focusing on his evil plans or hatred towards Dexter, he only thinks of his beloved Dee Dee and dreams of what kind of relationship they would have.

Despite this, Dee Dee has shown no interest in Mandark and at times seems to outright hate him or look down on him, and barely ever shows any friendly or compassionate feelings towards him, but regardless, Mandark's love for her remained unchanged throughout the series and he continued to love her unconditionally. In fact, even when Mandark was completely corrupted and became the evil and heartless Overlord Mandark in the future, the one thing that remained unchanged about him was his eternal love for Dee Dee, which is without a doubt a permanent trait of his personality that would stay with him even in his later years.

It was this love that would eventually lead to his own defeat in the future. Regardless, Mandark continues to love Dee Dee above all else; caring more about her well-being than even Dexter at times, with Mandark continuing to love her even when she destroyed his future empire while Dexter instead wanted her destroyed for taking the glory from him.

Trivia[]

  • In his first appearance "Dexter's Rival", Mandark was capable of reading thoughts and actually was smarter than Dexter. However, future episodes got rid of his ability to read minds and now he is less intelligent than Dexter, but it was just temporary when mandark give up of his trauma he rebult his lab once it was the same and next he rebult more creepier and darker and become more formidable and dangerous rival.
  • In "Babe Sitter", Mandark blew up Dexter's title in the opening by replacing Dexter's name with his after he plugged in his chord, making the title say "MANDARK'S LABORATORY" in a bloody pinkish red style by cutting the chord to Dexter's title and replaced DeeDee. Many fans considered that as the most horrible thing he has done in the intro until Dexter got even in "2 Geniuses 2Gether 4EVER".
  • Mandark was an NPC in the MMO online game Cartoon Network Universe: FusionFall.
    • He was also an assist character in the crossover video game Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion.
